    Nordic Ski Day VT

    February 5 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °F

Today we started slow with a late-ish breakfast and then took a short trip to Camel’s Hump Nortic Ski Area. When we got there, I ran into a local and asked him for a good beginner loop. Less than 3 minutes after we started, Melissa insisted that his definition of beginner, and her definition of beginner were not so close to each other. We settled for a gentle 1/4 mile loop in a neighboring field. When we got back to the car, Melissa let me take 40 min to do the beginner loop which I now agree would have been a challenge for her.
To celebrate the successful completion of Nortic Skiing, we drove to Burlington for a great lunch at The Farm House and some retail therapy on Church Street

  • Snowshoe at Little River

    February 6 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °F

Today was a relaxing day without much travel. After debating what activity we wanted to do, we both agreed to a snowshoe at the near by Litter River State Park. We picked a beautiful path that gradually climbed up a stream bed. I was so happy to use my new back pack (the one that I acquired through retail therapy the day before. After the hike, we stopped at a local diner for lunch, and then did a little more shopping (Melissa found a bucket hat). We had dinner with Emily and Bryan who had worked all day and gone to a Sauna before dinner in the Mad River Valley. Had fun meeting new guests at the SWC house, and playing games with the kids.Read more

  • Resort Skiing at Sugarbush

    February 7 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ -0 °F

Today, we hit the slopes for resort skiing, which is why everyone heads to Vermont this time of year! Sugarbush is my absolute favorite mountain around here. They don’t over-groom the trails, so there are tons of moguls (those snow bumps) that make skiing a bit more of a challenge. I skied with Emily and Bryan, and we were all doing Alpine skiing. No free heels today! The terrain was pretty wild, with about 5 inches of fresh powder on top of some really firm ground.

After hitting the slopes, we traveled back to the clubhouse for hors d’oeuvres with Melissa. She put together a fantastic fruit and cheese platter. Then, it was time to tidy up and drive to our old friends Beth and John to celebrate Beth’s 60th birthday. It was a fantastic party and a great opportunity to catch up with Beth’s entire family.

  • Skiing at Sugarbush

    February 7 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ -2 °F

Got an early start this morning. Went straight to Sugarbush and were early enough to get a great parking spot, and be on the lift by 8:15am. There was about 6” of fresh powder on a very firm base. Skiing moguls was challenging because the space between the modules was filled in with powder. Where there was powder, the skiing was great. Where there was no powder the skiing was meh…. But great to ski with the kids. As the day went on it got colder and colder and we were coxed off the mountain when the temp hit -3DegF without windchill.Read more

  • Heading home

    February 8 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 3 °F

Got up this morning to negative double digits outside. Now that I can ski any weekday, we took the more reasonable choice and skipped skiing to enjoy a more leisurely day. We started by cooking a big breakfast for everyone in the house (like a hosted weekend). We fed about 25 other house guests. They were very appreciative and even jumped in to clean up without anyone asking them. It was a beautiful drive down along Lake Champlain with the Adirondack High peaks in full view. Melissa was relieved to finally get the car washed when we got home… way too much salt for a new car!Read more
