  • Day 65 - Amsterdam

    20 de agosto de 2023, Países Bajos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today was our sightseeing day in Amsterdam. The nice thing was that it was not as hot today, so it was a perfect walking day. Amsterdam is famous for its beautiful canals. The city has over 100 kilometres of canals, and it is often referred to as the "Venice of the North" because of its waterways.

We walked about five kilometres from our accommodation to the centre of Amsterdam. The walkthrough of Westerpark was a charming Sunday stroll. Many people were out enjoying the sun, riding their bikes, or walking their dogs.

The first place to visit was Anne Frank’s house. Anne Frank lived in Amsterdam during World War II, and she gained fame posthumously with the publication of her diary, "The Diary of Anne Frank," which documents her life in hiding from the Nazis. There is now a museum on-site, but it was sold out today, so we couldn't go in.

We walked passed the Royal Palace and Grand Centraal Station before making our way back to our accommodation. It was an enjoyable Sunday walk.

  • Day 66 - Amsterdam to Brugge

    21 de agosto de 2023, Bélgica ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today’s plan was to take a short drive from Amsterdam to Brussels, check in early and look around Brussels. However, on arrival in Brussels, we had trouble finding the motel, as substantial roadwork was being done out front of the hotel. We were unable to get the car anywhere near the hotel.

After two attempts to get the car parked close to the hotel, we abandoned any further attempts and decided we would move on from Brussels. Fortunately, we could cancel our booking at the hotel without any charge. We then decided to drive a little further and find a hotel closer to the coast. So, we ended up in Brugge in a comfortable hotel room.

It is our first day on our tour that hasn't entirely gone to plan. But we were able to flex, and we ended up in a lovely place for the night.

  • Day 67 - Brugge to London

    22 de agosto de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today was our last driving day on tour. After leaving Brugge, we travelled to Ypres to visit the In Flanders Fields Museum. The In Flanders Fields Museum is dedicated to preserving the memory of World War I, notably the Battle of Ypres. The museum's name comes from the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

From Ypres, we drove to Calais to get on the Eurotunnel. We arrived well in advance of our departure time and joined the queue to go through French border control and then UK border control. The French just stamped our passports, but the UK border control wanted to know what we were doing in the UK and when we were leaving. We convinced them to let us in.

Accessing the Eurotunnel is relatively easy. You drive in one end of the train and then drive out the other end. The trip in the tunnel is only 35 minutes, so we’re soon back in the UK and on our way to London.

  • Back where we started

    22 de agosto de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After nine weeks on the road, we are back where we started in London. We travelled 15,000 kilometres in our little roadster, and we had no issues - it was super reliable. I will be feeling sad when we part company with this great little car tomorrow, but I will have lots of great memories.Leer más

  • Day 68 - Saying goodbye to our roadster

    23 de agosto de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We said goodbye to our little roadster today. Our man in the UK has agreed to help us dispose of the car. So, we gave the car a good wash and dropped it down to him. In the coming days, the vehicle will be sold back to the trade for the best price possible. I had contemplated other options on how I might keep the car, but they were all impractical and irrational. The only option was to sell the car for the best price.

I am thrilled that we could do our trip in a Mazda MX-5. After all, it wouldn’t have been Euroadster without it.

  • Day 69 - A quiet day in London

    24 de agosto de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today was probably our quietest day in the past nine weeks. We went to visit Mel's friends at Toad Bakery in Southwark. Oliver and Rebecca have a great business that bakes fantastic sourdough breads and delicious pastries. Mel worked with Oliver at Ottolenghi’s and then went to work at Toad. It was lovely to meet Oliver and Rebecca and to hear how much they miss not having Mel around.

From there, we travelled on the bus and train to Oxford Street. We had a look through a few shops, and Rob purchased a few souvenirs. We then travelled back to our accommodation for a quiet afternoon. We are now starting to think about packing our bags in preparation for our flight home on Saturday.
