  • Day 61 - Falcade to Munich

    16 Ağustos 2023, Almanya ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

After crisscrossing Switzerland and going in and out of Italy, we said goodbye to Italy on our way to Munich. We drove north over the Falzarego Pass and the Valparola Pass—the last two Italian passes on our trip.

We then passed the Austrian border on our way to view the Grossglockner. The Grossglockner is, at 3,798 metres above the Adriatic, the highest mountain in Austria and the highest in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass. It is a very well-made road, and I would expect to be so, given we were charged €40.00 to drive up it.

From the top car park, you can get a great view of the Grossglockner and its glacier. On our way down, we sat at one of the picnic benches and had our lunch with a magnificent view. We then drove over the pass at Hochtor and down the other side.

The road to Munich was busy, and we were stuck in traffic several times. Though we enjoyed driving on some great roads, this stop/start traffic was no fun. We had covered 480 kilometres in the day, and we were on the road for 12 hours. I was exhausted at the end of the day.

  • Day 62 - Munich

    17 Ağustos 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After breakfast, we made our way to the BMW Museum. We travelled via the U-Bahn, the underground rail network in Munich. It was a quick trip of only six stops, including a line change.

The BMW Museum is dedicated to the history of the BMW brand and showcases some of the company's most iconic cars. It was a very different set up to the museum from when I was here in 2011. This year, BMW is celebrating 100 years of making motorcycles, so there was a significant display of motorbikes on display. However, there were still all of the BMW cars you would expect to see on display.

From the BMW Museum, we walked over the road to BMW Welt, a multi-use exhibition centre designed to showcase BMW automobiles, technology and services. We also enquired about the factory tour. Unfortunately, August is a holiday month, so the factory was closed, and there were no tours.

We then wandered over to see the 1972 Munich Stadium. The Olympic precinct is still an active area, where the public uses the Olympic Swimming Pool, and the Olympic Stadium hosts athlete and football events.

We then travelled on the U-Bahn to Marienplatz, which is in the Old Town of Munich. Here we caught up with Jenny and Dave. Our sister-in-law, Debbie, had told us that her sister and brother-in-law were also in Munich. It was nice to catch up with them and chat about our respective trips over dinner.

  • Day 63 - Munich to Frankfurt

    18 Ağustos 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

The Alps are behind us, and we are now on our way back to London. The road from Munich to Frankfurt was uneventful, relatively flat, and all autobahn running. However, we did get an opportunity to stretch the legs on our roadster.

The autobahns have no federally mandated speed limit, but there are still recommended speed limits in some areas. On some occasions, I was driving at 130 kilometres per hour, yet other cars flew past me as if I was sitting still. Our roadster is not geared to go too much faster than l was going, so I was happy to sit at 130 kilometres per hour.

We stopped off in Stuttgart to visit the Mercedes Benz Museum. The museum building is impressive, and the museum display is one of the best we have been on tour. An elevator takes you to the top floor, and you wind your way down through the display across multiple levels. We also had a device that provided an audio description of the cars on display. We ended our day completing the drive to Frankfurt.

  • Day 64 - Frankfurt to Amsterdam

    19 Ağustos 2023, Hollanda ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today was another transport stage for our trip. We left Frankfurt with a plan to get as many of the 470 kilometres completed as early as possible. Driving at 130 kilometres per hour on the autobahn ensured we made good progress. There is a noticeable change once you cross the border into The Netherlands, the speed immediately dropping to 100 kilometres per hour. After the fast pace on the German autobahns, it was a pleasant change for the traffic to move at a more sedate pace.

By 1:00 pm, we were about 80 kilometres from Amsterdam, so we stopped in a small town and bought a few things for lunch. We then stopped off on the side of the road for a picnic lunch. By 3.00 pm, we had reacted Amsterdam and our accommodation.

Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands, and it is famous for its canals. The city has over 100 kilometres of canals, and it is often referred to as the "Venice of the North" because of its waterways. What is initially evident is its cycling culture. Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. There are over 800,000 bicycles in the city.
