We have circled back to the Furka Pass on our way to Zurich. The beautiful blue sky is a stark contrast to Monday’s snow. The road is a lot busier today. I may never get the opportunity to drive this road again, but I can die happy now that I have driven it.Leggi altro

  • Day 56 - Interlaken to Zurich

    11 agosto 2023, Svizzera ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We could have easily stayed another day at Interlaken, we both enjoyed the hotel accommodation and the vibe of Interlaken. From my last trip to Interlaken, I remembered a twisty section of the road that took my fancy. The twists, turns, and tunnels that made up this section of the road made it look like a pretzel on the navigation system. We found the pretzel road just outside of Brienzewiler.

Rob wanted to go through the Gotthard Tunnel and to do that, we needed to cross over the Grimsel Pass to get to Airolo at the southern end of the tunnel. So, we were backtracking on the roads we drove last Monday. If we were going to drive over Grimsel Pass, I suggested we also drive over the Furka Pass to Realp. Of course, once we got to Realp, we had to turn back and drive over the Furka Pass to continue our journey to Zurich.

To get to Airolo, we drove over the Nufenen Pass, the highest paved mountain pass in Switzerland. Along the way, we met many cows with bells grazing alongside the road. We could hear the ring of bells throughout the valley. When we reached the southern end of the Gotthard Tunnel, it was closed. Our only option was to drive over the Gotthard Pass, which we went over last Sunday. We were happy to drive another pass, so we weren't complaining. However, we weren't done with mountain passes just yet. On our way to Zurich, we took a detour over the Klausen Pass. This pass is known for its narrow roads, but no less spectacular than the other mountain passes we drove today.

Given the beautiful sunny weather and magnificent mountain pass roads, today's drive eclipsed last Monday and has now become the best day for driving on tour.

  • Day 57 - Zurich

    12 agosto 2023, Svizzera ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

After our long drive yesterday, today was somewhat of a rest day. After a sleep-in, I went for a run, and Rob went for a walk. We then walked into the centre of Zurich to look at the Old Town. We did have a walk around the Old Town and then walked down to the lake.

Today was Street Parade in Zurich, an annual techno music festival. It is one of the largest techno parties in the world with over a million people attending each year. We passed large groups of people in colourful clothing heading towards the lake for the parade.

We had no intention of heading to the parade we were catching up with Eli and Lapo for lunch. We went to Hiltl vegetarian restaurant, as suggested by Eli. It was great to catch up with Eli again and to meet Lapo for the first time.

  • Day 58 - Zurich to St Moritz

    13 agosto 2023, Svizzera ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We started our day driving along the side of Lake Zurich, one of the largest lakes in Switzerland. The sun was rising over the opposite side of the lake, and the sun was reflecting off the water. We stopped for a while to take in the serenity.

We detoured through Liechtenstein and stopped briefly in Vaduz, the capital. As it was a Sunday, everything was shut, so we didn't stay long before moving on. We also drove through Davos on our way. Somehow I drove down a bus lane, and some locals gestured at me to get out of the bus lane. I am sure they recognised my UK licence plate and thought to themselves, how typical.

Before getting to St Moritz, we had a mountain pass to climb. The Flüela Pass connects the towns of Davos and Susch and has an elevation of 2,383 metres. It was a less challenging mountain pass than the other day, but nonetheless enjoyable.

We arrived early to check in and sat in the shade for an hour. Our accommodation looks like it has just been renovated and it has a kitchen. So, we can cook our dinner instead of going to an expensive Swiss restaurant. We are delighted with that.
