The worlds largest lava lake. A 5 hour hike to over 11,000 feet.
Where the hike begins after a brief registration and logistics are taken care of.
For the overnight hike there are only three of us but we have a support team of about five including to Park Rangers equipped with guns and communication gear.
We make the campsite before sunset through an occasional rain shower but not without a few slips and a fall along the way.
An impressive sight by an stretch of the imagination even if it is filled with fire and brimstone.
