    Staying just before Marcellinara

    The rain has started. Only a light drizzle and got more and more. Everybody told me I should walk the long way on the road to Marcellinara. But I've read that somebody dinner years ago have wild twice the old CAI trail. So I gave it a try. Well... No idea why everybody told me not to do. It was much easier then other trails before. I think i just nobody knows the conditions. Just talking.
    Unfortunately the train got stronger and the plants/bush have been wet. So I got wet too.
    But after this section, the wind mills start again and thus there is a road. And...a picnic area. This time with shelters and fire places.
    There is already a small group of young guys making party today. I just joined and warm me a bit at the fire. Nice place for this conditions. I am not sure what to do tomorrow. Let's see.
    I also hope the 3 stray dogs do not stay. To have no problems with Lupo.

    Rainy day. We've started late cause of the rain and to rest. Meet friendly people in a bar and even got a coffee and some food. So nice.
    Walking through Marcellinara and Tiriolo was not exciting. All the time into fog and drizzle. Everything closed because of the holiday. Even Bars have had closed from midday I guess. No views from the ancient Tiriolo to even one of the sea sides.
    I have also chosen more road walking if possible to avoid bad trails, which I've read on these sections. I've planned to stop early and probably find something to stay tomorrow. They predict now 2 nights and one day of strong rain.

    Rainy day - Rest day

    After 1332km and now a bad weather period I've decided to rest one day at the sanctuary. We were allowed to sleep in the separate house for guests and have been alone . We haven't done much except for planning and resting. I think that was the right decision. Especially for the dog.Read more

    Baita in the forest

    Actually today on the trail I decided to not do the detour through Sila NP. The weather is windy, cold, sometimes foggy and the trail is often a forest road . The area just looks like at home in the forest and you walk km for km alone through in the same surrounding. Well... Sometimes more sometimes less wind and rain. No shop, cafe, bar etc on the way. This I decided I will not do that loop through the NP and search for a more direct route. This saves me about 3 days and I get faster further north.
    So my alternative is through the forest too. Up to 1400m and then mostly down again.
    Just reaching there pad on the way down I pass in the forest a small hut (Baita) with 3 cars in front. I see the men inside at the window and wave to them. They immediately left the hut and asked me for a coffee. Very have been very interested and friendly. Have me some food and I can warm me at the fire. They offered me to sleep here. Would bet nice, but we need to go further today. So it is noon and we just make the lunch break here.

    After the whole day drizzle, it has finally stopped to rain. Wind is calm too. Hopefully it stays like this during the night.
    We've just passed the little village Parenti. Actually nothing special, except the people. Quite a few outside, doing shopping or being in the cafe/bar. The friendliness was noticable! Most people great and some start a bit to talk.
    There was a Ferramenta shop, but again he has not had the gas container I need. So das that I don't have the adapter. The cheaper gas bottles they have everywhere. If I don't get it tomorrow in the way, I really need to go to decathlon Cosenza, which is a detour of a few km.
    Let's see, there is a climbing shop on the way.

    Train from Rogliano to Cosenza

    Unfortunately I can not get the gas for the stove in the Ferramenta somewhere. So I decided to take the train from Rogliano to Cosenza. The plan is to stroll in the city and go to Decathlon for the gas and do some shopping at Lidl. And take the train back to the SI. Looks like a good plan so far.

    Mostly all the time forest walking. Different trail conditions. The difficulty changes. From walking a single trail in leaves uphill thru the forest until gravel road or softer forest roads. Nice walking on the Franziskusweg.

    I've met only one older hiking lady on that day. But very friendly.
    In the morning it was sunny, but in the afternoon on the ridge the clouds came in. The wind with the wet air gets very fresh.
    Sometimes you have an interesting scenery with this fog.

    Big plans can change

    We've started early this morning from our shelter. It was a good place to stay overnight, except the noise from the waterfall outside.
    We've laid down at 7pm I guess. So we've had lots of sleep until 5:30am.

    The day continuoud like the day before. Forest walking and good soft ground. So i made the plan to make a long day and hike to a bivacco.
    At the middle of the planned stage, there have been some lakes and we've wanted to rest there. There was already a camper. From Belgium. Fine...I immediately asked if they could charge my empty phone and conversation started. Christopher and Alyona. Actually it was such a nice chatting that I've stayed so much longer as planned. We've had some food and finally in the afternoon I left to go on my way again. So nice!

    Unfortunately Lupo started to have problems on his back limb. Even after such a long break. No idea what's going on. In the middle of the way I was searching through his paws, but I couldn't find anything. Nothing.
    After dinner, slow walking and resting, and again slow walking, it started to get a bit better. I wanted to hike a little bit down from that ridge. It is cold and foggy up on the ridge, and the trail decends from 1000m to about 400m.
    So we are still on our way down and look for a good sleeping place.

    Well... Probably we walked to close to the village. It is harder to find a sleeping spot. Dogs are barking and the village is bigger then I thought. Openstreetmap does not show many details. But so far, we have a quiet nice place.

    Camping in the rain

    From late morning until the end of the day, there has been lots of rain. At the Refugio we stopped for a break and decided to stay there and pitch the tarp on the wet ground. It rarely stopped to rain. And even during the night it got stronger. But no wind. The tarp did his job and we mostly stayed dry. But that's no fun at all. Most times you are a bit cold and have wet shoes all the time. A rest is comfortable only for a short time. I hope the sun will appear the next days. Well.. There is still hope...

    I've reached with my friend Morano Calabria, in the rain. Pretty foggy today. The trail was okay, but with obstacles. The wet and muddy ground makes it slippery sometimes. Not many river crossings. But not really many views either. The scenery looks interesting with the fog in the trees and the light shining in the leaves. But taking pictures in the wet weather is no fun. The mobile phone is sometimes hard to handle, if everything is wet. The fingerprint and the screen starts to do it's own thing. So not many pictures have been taken.

    Having a clear weather down in the valley, just before I have already seen Monte Pollino in white. Everybody told me there is no snow up there. Hmm
    The clouds are still high and I think the ascending to Colle Gaudollino should not be a problem. And up there is a bivacco which must be pretty good. With two beds.
    In the afternoon the weather forecast predicts stronger rain again. So I can decide to stay up there or just go further.    Read more

    We've left a bit late from the Bivacco. 7:30am.
    It was raining before and we've enjoyed a good breakfast with tea and coffee.
    Luckily it stopped to rain and the sun came out for a second. Dark grey sky from west approached fast. So we've rushed thru the forest and meadows to reach the next Refugio fast. The path was great. Half of it in the snow. Packed hard enough to walk and run.. so we've reached the hut at about 9:30. Fine. Everything works out well. :)Read more

    At the beginning off the trail or looked a bit touristy. Probably in season there will be lots of people hiking/walking along the river. The first part has been very nice. Good trail. Lots of water. Unfortunately after awhile it connects to a forest road and it is less impressive.

    We've reached the donut without any problems. With gps navigation no problem. In it is marked but not good enough for bad weather. The cold wind was strong and we've spent not much time up there.
    After waking in the stony ridge, the park entered the forest again and after a short period of time you are at the picnic area.    Read more

    After reaching Monte Santa Croce, we arrived at Refugio Bosco Favino @1345m. Around the top of the summit you walk at the ridge and it is pretty windy and cold up there. Not good enough marked for bad weather. But after reaching the forest again, the path got easy and mostly dry. Nice forest with lots of leaves. We actually ran down most times. At the Refugio there are so many brand new tables, fireplaces (bbq) and a new building for a museum I guess. No Refugio anymore. Not what I see right now. So I immediately decided to stay. It is only 5k from the next town and we will pass really morning tomorrow I guess.
    Lupo ist happy to arrive at campground and it's already sleeping.
    Tomorrow the weather will change again and I think the best will be to start very early.

    Got up early and hike into town before the rain. In the forest evening stayed dry. Fine.

    Walking 15min in the wet grass and the socks which 8 have dried for 10hr during the night are completely wet again. So annoying.

    Here in the village they have the new Tibetan Bridge... Directly next to the center.

    Looking back... To the last mountain and even Pollino

    Lesson learned for today

    For today i have learnt my lesson.
    Stopping in the morning at a self service coffee machine and charge 45min the phones is fine. But drinking 7 coffees (50c reach) is definitely too much. You don't feel any effect right after drinking it. Probably the potato pizza and 1 bar of hazelnut chocolate helps.
    But one hour later during hiking... Well .. It doesn't help at all.
    But now I know how a Cafe lungo, Cappuccino, Cafe Macchiato and cappuccino with Ginseng tastes.

    Next time I will drink 1l Coca Cola. That gives you the better second wind. Probably the sugar helps....there is still hope...    Read more
