    Sheep and their guardians

    Shit... Next to the road some sheep and their guardians. White, fluffy, double of the size of Lupo ... just 3 at the beginning.... Just moments later...I guess 8.... That's what I have counted... Barking and approaching fast. From more sides....

    And Lupo does not react like i want and walk further fast...

    But luckily they are afraid of me and the hiking pole.
    Me shouting and using the whistle...

    But they follow us for at least 500m... Even we get more distance to the sheep.    Baca selengkapnya

    Monte Sirino.... Next stage

    Arrived at the ski resort Monte Sirino

    I've arrived at the bottom of Monte Sirino a little bit later then I wanted to. But still fine for the conditions. I think it was 14:30. The weather forecast for the afternoon was so troubles that i wanted to be there very early. But we've got enough rain anyway. The summit is in clouds and on the north side of the mountain are a view small pieces of snow. The temperature is chilly.
    I've come some pasta and the dog got lots of food too. He walked very well and need to dry now.

    Actually this was a questionable stage. 6km to town and 27km further to the ski resort mostly on first roads and quiet sealed roads. Designed like a loop. So we are not much further. Nice walking and sometimes a good view. But I'd it really worth to hike that long and demanding stage? About 1400hm+ ?
    And this sometimes in the rain?
    For me, very questionable. I think I would avoid it if possible.

    Monte Sirino & Monte del Papa

    We've left early around 6am. The mountain was clear and no rain. Actually it stayed like this the whole stage.
    You hike up the ski piste. Some snow fields left, but not many to cross.
    It is Sunday... But nobody is up there. It is fresh and windy at 2000m. The unfortunately the church up on the top had still been closed. With big iron doors protected for the harsh weather i guess.

    Strong rain today. After more or less sleep below the tarp I've decided to start at 10:45am to walk further on. The weather forecast predicts stronger rain until 14:00. Less afterwards. But in the valley. And we want to hike up to 1600m. There is a Refugio and a Bivacco.

    Actually we've left Basilicata. We are now in Campania.

    Rain...rain..rain

    Everywhere huge puddles in the meadows, branches on the way and dog in the mountains. The rain does not really stop for long.
    At 4pm we've passed a small hut and waited for the train to stop. But it seems to me it is better to stop and start again tomorrow morning.
    Unfortunately we are at 1200m and in the fog again.

    Ready climb until the last part... It got really kind of Alpine. Rocky. We've reached the summit at 18:10 and headed down fast.

    Today we've done a long stage. 2 CAI stage together. A long and a short Alpine one. The path was most times okay. The alpine part was unexpected. And at the end we ran down to have a warmer night. Unfortunately today is holiday and the supermarket was closed. So we need to buy food tomorrow.

    Finally we've accomplished the stage in the valley. Actually it is not really flat. Only parts of it. Other parts are steep uphill on the road. And an adventure part was included too. Sometimes I ask myself, who the hell has marked that trail. If you would know it before, you definitely would choose a different route. It was so easy to detour. But well .. It just takes another hour and lots of nerves and wet shoes.
    Now we are in Senerchia. At a small church above. And the weather will change now. In front of us is a long stage (I think 25km with D+ 1550hm D- 1436hm, summit 1800m).

    To stay here... Hmmm... It's not the best place. To go up... It will get dark of we reach the summit... And probably rains.
    Tomorrow it rains most of the day.
    Just do parts of it means colder nights and the risk of finding a flat surface for the tarp.
    But I have seen a building at 1460m. Flat around, in the forest. It will be cold up there at night but a good start for tomorrow to hop to the summit and down again. So I think I will start now to do another 9km at least with quite a few elevation meters. The ticker shows right now 37km D+ 1150hm. Well... Let's go    Baca selengkapnya

    We've started late today (9:30). Good to sleep longer at bad weather days. But actually it was not that bad like they've predicted. But the 5k to the summit took forever. The way down to Acerno too. Not step, but uneven ground. Searching the marks, finding the way and balancing through the rolling stones and branches on the way. Pretty windy with even stronger gusts on the meadows of the mountain.
    We've reached the town early enough to buy some food. We've ate a little bit in a bakery and i wondered that around 13:30 they closed the shop. I thought no problem to move in a bar, cause there have been very strong gusts now on the road. Then I realized that no people are around anymore. The streets are empty and everything is closed. Everything. Like a ghost town. There are quite a few bars in Acerno, but all have been closed at that time. This is different to the south. Bars have had been open mostly always.     Caserma Forestale di Giffoni

    It started to rain at about 16:00. No strong rain but enough to get uncomfortable. The trees of the forest have been a good protection for awhile. Water flows in the creeks and sometimes on the trail. The shoes started to get wet again. I've seen to possibilities on the gps track to probably stay. A caserma and probably a small bivacco or Refugio. Just closer to each other. So we've reached the caserma and it is a bigger house where scouts are for the weekend. Luckily they offered us hostage for the night. We can charge the phones and have protection. And Lupo can rest. That's very nice. Good for the dog to be able to recover from the long asphalt stage yesterday. He really has had problems with his paws again. I will cream them tonight. And see how it is tomorrow.

    We've left the Forestale at 8:30am. There weather forecast was not too bad, but it didn't look very friendly. Only a slight drizzle in the afternoon was predicted. Actually I realized that i have too less food for the day and on Sunday the shops close at 13:00.
    Monte Terminio was completely in clouds and I have seen the chance to reach the next village in time, if i hike through the valley and hike very quick.
    The first part had been s single trail, overflown with lots of water. Creeks everywhere and often to cross. Lots of brambles on the way too. So hard to speed up. We've passed a cave and waterfalls. But haven't had much time.
    At one creek crossing, I've lost my tip of the hiking pole. 3 CAI hikers passed too and looked for the tip too. Actually luckily after dinner minutes i have really found it in the water. Pooohhh... Some more time lost... But at least I can use the pole further on.

    Finally we've really made the 20km into town,....easily in time. Fantastic...

    From before i know that soon will be the closing time and probably this village is extinct again. So i hurried up to get a pizza and coffee. Of course, it started to rain. But no drizzle. A real shower. And again and again. Waiting there for better weather, the 3 hikers entered the restaurant. Nice. We've chatted s bit. Nice to talk to similar minded people.
    It took a long time until the rain stopped and we've heard only a little bit further to find shelter.

    On the way to Salerno

    Today is special...
    In the morning we headed pretty early to Contrada. Got a coffee and pistachio croissant in a cafe, chatted with the English barman and sat down in the park to have muesli as breakfast. Suddenly Pascale passed with his old and ill dog and started to talk. He is also often on the road in Italy and Spain. Using a wheelbarrow for his dog. We've chatted and he asked me to have s shower. He lives pretty close. So I could clean myself, have a coffee and he asked to join me for awhile. Sure. So in some minutes he was prepared and has had packed his backpack with tent etc.. Je prepared the wheelbarrow and e. Started to walk together into the next town.
    Unfortunately one lucky incident happened after the other. The sun was strong and the dogs got too hot. A bus driver who passed stopped, but did not take us with. I couldn't understand the discussion. But don't minutes later a friend of Pascale passed with his van and took us 3km further into the village. We've got water and refreshment and headed further. Only after minutes, the wheel got a flat. The tire is too old. Loses air. So all in all Pascale decided it is not the right time. And he headed back home and me and Lupo further to the next supermarket to do for the next days. The Amalfi coast.
    I realized again, (even it has been raining a few times already) that the air at such s low elevation is warm and humid. Lupo didn't want to walk. We slowly hiked out of town and a thunderstorm came closer. Lupo is afraid of thunderstorms and stopped immediately.
    I've found a shed to get some shelter if it really starts. About 15min there was not really much. Some wind from time to time. We've nevertheless waited done more minutes. And then you could hear it for some seconds.... The wind? No. It was the approaching strong rain. Crazy. A real hefty shower. So I used that time to write these lines. But can not publish it now, cause Internet data limit is used completely. I must wait 3 days I guess. So I am offline for awhile. Probably that's okay.     After a very long and hard day, we finally made it to a small Bivacco. Not really good, but not bad either. A little bit further on top of the mountain is a better one (which I have seen the next day). But that was too far. I am actually happy to have found this one. The path is not really marked and even the correct way is hard to find. Very overgrown, small, sometimes very rocky etc etc....
    No fun... One of the worst trail conditions on the whole tour.
    I was tired and Lupo really a lot.
    We've had not really much water with us and that area is pretty dry. But for that night is was fine. I need to look on the next day, to find something. It is not that easy like before.

    We're m now pretty close to our next destination. Cap Campanella and Sorrento. Luckily we have warm weather right now. On the other hand we must be careful to find always enough water, cause we stay on higher elevations a lot and the trail here is someone's terrible. Really so bad that you want to leave that trail immediately. But it has changed from time to time. Where you meet tourists again. They've told me, that down in there villages it must be crazy. So crowded (from the cruise ships). Here in the mountains we meet about 10-15 people a day. Once there was a group. But most hikers speak German.Baca selengkapnya

    Lupo is tired. From yesterday, today and I think the warm weather. Luckily we have enough water for tonight and I will not go 4km further to a bivacco. It is not far, but here is a nice place and warm. With tables. Just above Positano. A quiet place, except the noise you hear from below. We can sleep early and get up earlier. So probably we slow down to the end and walk in 2 days to the cape or Sorrent(o).

    Heading further to the cape, the trail is often really overgrown. At least not much brambles. But high grass and it is blooming! My allergy started immediately. That's tough.
    The ground is so uneven and someone's so sharp rocks/stones. Al in all, hard to walk. Hefty for the knees.
    We started at 6am too get a bit done in the morning hours. Now at 11am it is already pretty warm. I do not find often fountains to shower Lupo a bit.
    So I guess we will slow down now and try to relax in the shadow too.

    Passing the main road and some "villages" you immediately got the crowds. Tourists, cars, scooters and noise... Pulling on the nerves immediately. Better to leave and hike... Cause not too man tourists hike and I guess it will get more quiet after a short time.    Baca selengkapnya

    Yessss... We've done the scary part of all hikers on that trail ... The steep downhill to the beach. CAI warning signs....i wondered... Classification EE... Like before in the mountains.
    It was written that Brambles and lots of vegetation are on the way ..
    Actually it was much better.... No brambles. You must only watch to not slide down. But the ground was dry. So.... Fine.

    First time I've heard a nice beach again since south/west of Sicily. I needed to clean my legs because of all the polls of the grass on the way. With the allergy and sweat it is very itchy.

    A fantastic picnic and rest area was on the way, where we've chatted with German PCT hikers. Pretty interesting experience.    Baca selengkapnya
