    Audenshaw to Birkenhead to Belfast!

    April 28, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

A fabulous smooth 8 hour ferry crossing. Enjoyed some fish and chips in the quiet ferry lounge, and a snooze and shower in our cabin before arriving around 6pm. It was a short drive to Ballygally, our seafront first stop, where we cracked open the wine, put some chips in the air fryer (local pub closed for food) and taught Al and Anne the joys of uno!Read more

  • Up the Coast to the Gobbins!

    April 29, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

A good sleep, then pootled into Larne where we had our first Irish breakfast. Got some shopping then headed up the coast to Ballycastle.

Did the famous Gobbins walk in the afternoon. Due to the bad weather the latter half was closed off, but we still got a good flavour for the impressive cliffs, caves and walls, and cleverly constructed walkways. We laughed until we cried when poor Anne got soaked twice by huge waves!

A lovely evening spent with wine and playing Uno again… lots of laughter!

  • Giants Causeway!

    April 30, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Next up to Portbalintrae, where we stayed on a lovely campsite, mostly full of static caravans. We had a fabulous walk along the coast up to Gaints Causeway. Such beautiful scenery and really interesting rock formations, including the giants chair. We enjoyed our picnic overlooking the causeway, then wandered back. A lovely dinner at a nearby seafront hotel with some of Anne’s friends, where we were treated to a fabulous sunset. Had to laugh at Al’s single scallop - he wasn’t best pleased about the £5 supplement!Read more

  • Whisky, wine and beer!

    May 1, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

On our way around the coast, stopped at Dunluce castle. Chuckled at the Paddywagon and remarked how quiet it was, and we were lucky for the time of year.

Decided to head over to Bushmills whisky distillery today… “when in Rome”. Although I can firmly confirm I do not like whisky after the tastings, it was interesting to see the process, smells and learn the significance of the different barrels.
We then met Anne’s lovely aunties for a walk on Portstewart Strand, enjoyed beachfront coffees, and dipped our toes in the sea.

Anne and I were very giddy after wanting to find Allen a nice bottle of wine as a thank you gift for all the driving… left the store with a lovely bottle of “fat bastard” which will forever make us laugh. As always Al saw the funny side!

We found a pub stopover at Annargy, where we had fabulous food and a home brewed beer flight, and enjoyed the peaceful setting by the estuary.

  • Donnegal Town

    May 2, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Today was probably our longest drive, down to the gorgeous quaint Donegal town. Kate threw up as soon as we arrived, but did so well considering the windy roads! Interesting to meet some Canadians on holiday, it’s quite the international destination.

We stopped off at Donegal craft centre which was a nice artisan mooch, but no purchases made.

When we arrived, the campsite was interesting. The owner had basically created a small shower block in a lean to off his home, and was packing as many motorhomes as he could on his forecourt/drive. As cosy as it was, can’t complain as he kindly took us into town where we arrived early to get a seat at a local music pub, and picked us up again afterwards! The traditional music - Irish jigs and reels were great, as was the Guinness!
Also loved lending Anne a pair of my dungarees.

  • Atlantic Dip and a Quiet Night

    May 3, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Continued along the coast and stopped off at Enniskillen for a swim. The sea was cool but Kate and I had a lovely dip.
We then carried onto Fivemiletown, where we stayed on a lovely quiet lakeside site. We walked into the village centre and picked up fish and chips, which we enjoyed overlooking the lake.
Then enjoyed a movie night in the motorhome, watching saints against sinners followed by Mrs Browns boys - keeping the Irish theme.

  • Belfast and Back…

    May 3, 2024 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Enjoyed a day in Belfast - sightseeing and shopping. I can’t remember how many thousand steps but it was a lot! So interesting to see the Peace Wall, and the beautiful Belfast City Hall and exhibitions.
We did a mammoth big shop to bring Irish food supplies home (in particular for my grandparents), and tallied up our game of “Al’s Irish bingo”.

Managed to get on an earlier overnight ferry too, so we were back home for Monday morning (bank holiday), so able to wash and get sorted before another busy work week!

Later inspired to bake some Guineas cupcakes too.

A fabulous adventure, though Ireland is huge and with so much natural beauty and fabulous people, we’ll certainly visit again for another Roadtrip!
