  • The GPS is not working :-S. It was just a disconnected pin

    Brain reset - T0

    July 17, 2021 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Saturday morning. It was finally time to leave. My stomach is always funny when I'm nervous and this day was no exception.

Although we woke up early, we had to finish packing and setting everything up on the motorbike. I also wanted to drop off my company laptop, to mark this rite of passage, something that I had been putting off until the very last minute.

By the time we got everything done it was already noon. We immediately knew some things will continue to shift and move in the way we set them up, but we were both so eager to get going we just made sure we checked everything off the list.

And it was finally go time. Except our GPS wouldn't work. It certainly didn't seem like a promising start. Răzvan managed to fix it quickly, as it was just a pin that wasn't connecting properly. Saved the day before even having lunch! And then it was really show time.

We left home around 2pm and our spirits were up. Adventure time!

  • First camping - romanian style

    July 17, 2021 in Romania ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We ended the first riding day quite short, in time to still be able to catch a bath. Tășnad is an traditional Romanian thermal bath resort. It was our first time visiting.

We were suprised the campground was quite busy, there were caravans than we expected. What was not surprising was the blasting folk music you could hear all around. Răzvan came up with a memorable saying:
Romanian camping without folk music is like cola without sugar - it's still good but something is missing.

We set up the tent and went to explore the pool area.

  • Soup of people in Tășnad

    July 17, 2021 in Romania ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We've got our priorities straight, so grabbed dinner before going in for a dip. The cold lemonades and beer were also much appreciated after an afternoon driving in the heat.

We then made our way to the pool area. It reminded me of the bath house in Spirited Away. It was crowded, people were mostly staying in to get pickled and the warmish water made it feel like everyone was slowly getting cooked in a giant pot of soup.

And remember the folk music in the camping area? It was blasting from 4 different restaurants in the pool area. Obviously each one playing some else. How this whole combo was relaxing for people was somewhat of a mystery to us. So, we grabbed some dessert and called it a day.

  • Dangerous birds held captive

    July 18, 2021 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Crossing into Hungary took longer than we expected. We queued at the border control for about 2 hours. With little to no shade, this tested our patience a bit.
So, once we crossed, we stopped at one of the first gas stations for some well deserved ice cream and cold drinks.

To our surprise the gas station had a small petting zoo area, with all sorts of birds. I joked around saying they were highly dangerous prisoners, but really, I wish we didn't cage animals for our own entertainment.

  • Sun flowers in Hungary

    July 18, 2021 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

    Fuck it, I'm a flower
    Growing taller every day
    Getting greener by the hour
And I don't care what people say...

I had this song stuck in my head for about 2 weeks before we left. We passed by so many sun flower fields I couldn't help but want a little photoshoot near them.

This was our first "let's stop for a photo" moment. I had so much fun, it totally lightened my mood. Hungary is not the most entertaining country to ride through, but these sunflowers definitely made our day.

  • Out of control fire in camping

    July 19, 2021 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Our goal was to get to Slovakia the same day. We managed to find a camping and pitch our tent just as it started raining. The camping had hosted a 4 day music festival, and it really looked like it. There were yellow grass spots where all the tents had been and lots of trash bags gathered together in several spots.
The hosts explained this was the night the organizers and volunteers would have their party and that we were not about to have a quiet evening. We picked a spot as far away from the common areas as we could. We were so tired, we were confident we'd sleep through anything.

We fell asleep around 7.30pm and woke up around midnight to what sounded like a fire near our tent. The rain had stopped and all we could hear were loud crackling sounds. We went outside to see what was going on.

The fire wasn't as close to our tent as we thought, but it was out of control. The aim was to build a tall bonfire, but it crashed towards the nearby try and burnt much of its leaves. We only saw the real damage the following morning.

Shower log - the showers were spatious, with wooden separators and as much warm watter you wanted. However the building itself was more of a shelter, the walls did not go all the way up. So it was quite windy and cold inside.

There was a festival in the camping and the people got very drunk. They underestimated how big the bonfire will get and when they realized it was too late. Not sure if the tree will ever recover.

  • Chill morning in camping Slavec

    July 19, 2021 in Slovakia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We woke up from our second camping night, and we had already had a thunderstorm.

The surroundings looked much more inviting in the sun, so we explored the area a bit and enjoyed the large swings. This was an old meeting place for the different communities of the area. Every summer they met here they added a new sculpted column to their collection.Read more

  • Lake in the mountains

    July 19, 2021 in Slovakia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We rode on and came by this lake. We took a little detour to take a closer look and stretch our legs near it.

The parking lot near it had a 4euro fee, so we cut our stop short and asked if we could be spared the fee. They were nice enough to allow us to do so.Read more

  • Lunch break in Banska Bystrica

    July 19, 2021 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We stopped for lunch and picked a spot that looked like it had the most "local" people eating there.

When we got the menus and saw they only served a daily menu and had no English version, I started to feel a bit nervous. In most eastern-European small town/country places where you mention vegetarian options, you usually get served a some side dishes. We get our food and....feel instantly relieved. It looks very good and the portions are more generous than we expected.

We walked up and down the main street and even found a monument that says: "Thanks to the Romanian army - they freed our city".

  • Bela camping in Slovakia

    July 19, 2021 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our way of sorting out where we sleep might seem naive. We almost never book anything in advance and pick a place based on where we got to that day.

This is how we ended up at the Bela camping in Slovakia, and yes, it was bella.
The reception was nice and cozy, the camping well maintained. There was a service house often enough so you didn't have to walk a long time to get to a kitchen or a bathroom.

We picked a spot near a tree, with plenty of space around us to feel comfortable.

This was the first camping of the trip where shower time was timed. A crime against humanity. At least against the side of humanity that enjoys long, warm, showers. Once you pressed the start button, a timer appeared and it looked like a bomb about to go off. There was no pause button. On top of this, water blasted out from a top shower head, so strong it felt like someone was trying to test water based laser on people. It really felt like it was you vs the shower, in a confrontation where violence was allowed. I stepped out the of shower feeling like someone kicked my ass out of it. We shared a laugh talking about it and discovered this wasn't nice for either of us.

We took a long walk around the campground and went to sleep.
The next morning we had tea and butter biscuits, such a treat!
