    Hello Munich

    22 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

Well, we made it! The flight was good, but sleep escaped me for most of the trip. Which gave me a chance to watch all those stupid movies I never wanted to pay to go see. Nicky had a bit more sleep than me, but we were both pretty buggered by the time we got to the hotel.

It was 2 degrees when we arrived... it's been a while since I've been in the cold like that. Might have to rethink my fashion sense. I brought gloves, but never thought about having to use your phone... so will need to invest in some warm, hi-tech gloves.

Had a quick walk around the local area to get a few photos to prove we were here. It's fantastic to see the autumn colours again... Beautiful!

  • München Old Town

    23 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

We slept for 14 hours last night... feel almost human today.

And what a day it was... clear blue sky and the temperature soared up to 6 degrees. A beautiful day to wander the city, but the next 10 days are forecast for rain and snow. Woot!

Anyway, walked into the old town where the Christmas Markets are being set up. They officially open on Monday, so we'll have to go back then.

The Markets are in Marienplatz, just outside the New Town Hall, which is called Neues Rathaus (how appropriate). We arrived just in time to watch the main clock to go off at 11. Quite impressive.

From there we wandered up to the English Gardens, which are quite impressive with the autumn colours. Stopped for a Glühwein (mulled wine) to warm us up before walking back to the hotel.

  • NS-Dokumentationstrum

    24 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

Let me apologise in advance for this potentially depressing post…

We visited the NS-Dokumentationszentrum today, which is the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism. It records the events that led to the birth, rise and fall of the Nazi Party here in Munich.

It is a unique museum in that it doesn't focus on the major events of WWII, but rather, undertakes a detailed analysis of the political and social environment that allowed Hitler and the Nazi Party to rise to power.

The focus is not on the major heroes and villains of the war, but the impact on everyday people. Not just the persecuted Jewish and Romani peoples, but the German people themselves who eventually came to realise how they were misled and suffered dearly in the end.

It was very moving and sobering, moreso because the exact same sequence of events is happening again today.

The Nazi Party campaigned as the Far Right with the promise to bring prosperity back to Germany by solving the problems brought on by Socialists and Communists, which was eventually blamed on non-Aryan people in general. Today we have promises to bring back prosperity and protect us from immigrants and muslims. Sound familiar?

In the end, the Centre puts the blame for the rise of Nazi Germany on the unwillingness of the general population to reject and fight against facism.

    I think there’s a message here…

  • A beer at Hofbrauhaus

    24 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

No visit to Munich is complete without having a litre of beer at the world famous Hofbrauhaus. I didn’t really want to, but thought I should “take one for the team” and check it out.

It’s a massive hall and it was absolutely chockers… but we eventually found a table and ordered some German cuisine. I had German Sausage with mustard and potato salad. Nicky had spinach dumplings in a blue cheese sauce. It was a simple meal, but absolutely delicious.

And then there’s the beer… I don’t think I’ll be able to drink a Great Northern or XXXX again. It is the best beer I’ve had in ages. I can’t put my finger on exactly what the difference was, but it was delightful.

Check out the photo of the men's urinal... obviously a lot of beer to get rid of. I wanted to stand in the centre and see if I could hit all of them, but they frowned on that for some reason... 😂

Unfortunately, the Oompah Band went on extended break before I could get a video, but that was a good excuse to go back the next day. So now we have a video.

Overall, a delightful end to the day…

  • Snow and Surfing in Munich

    25 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

An easy day today just wandering through the shopping district. I have to say they go all out for the Christmas decorations.

I invested in some gloves and a scarf to help ward off the snow. We had flurries on and off throughout the day, but by late afternoon it was getting quite heavy.

We thought we'd pay a visit to Eisbachwelle, a popular spot on the Eisbach River where people surf the rapids. Quite amazing, but I'm not convinced it's a good winter sport. Check out the video.

Oh, and we might have had another mulled wine somewhere along the way... 🤫

  • Christmas Markets

    27 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The Munich Christmas Markets opened today, so we decided to wander around and check things out.

It was a nice day, but a little on the chilly side. So we had to make sure we kept ourselves topped up with the medicinal Glühwein.

The markets were lovely, but being opening night it was absolute chockers. So we went and had another Glühwein... 😁

  • Stuttgart

    29 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Continuing our search for the ultimate Christmas Markets, we jumped on a high speed train and made our way to Stuttgart. And when I say high speed... 250 kph. Take that QR!

The markets don't open until tonight, so we'll have to check them out tomorrow.

So we wandered around the city to see some of the sights. We're using an app called GPSMyCity... Another silly name, but a good app for doing self-guided tours in various cities.

Stuttgart has a large shopping district, Nicky was in her element. I didn't mind, it was a good excuse to go into some warmth. -2 when we got up this morning... 🥶

  • A Day in Heidelberg

    30 November 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Decided to take a quick train up to Heidelberg for the day. What an interesting city. The old town is a few kilometres from the train station, so we jumped on a bus.

First stop was the Heidelberg Schloss, or Castle. It sits on the side of a mountain overlooking the city. Lucky for us, there's a funicular railway up to the castle. A short ride, but worth it.

The castle was fascinating. It was built around 1214 and had been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times since then. So it's an interesting mixture of rings and renovations. Not a bad view of the valley and town below. We had a good day for it.

The castle has a giant wine barrel that was used for collecting wine as tax. It held 221,726 litres of wine, although it was more of a tourist attraction than a useful wine store.

The castle also has an Apothecary Museum, which has a number of exhibits about medical care back in the 1700 and 1800's.

Afterwards we wandered down to the old town to see the Christmas Markets and have a little Glühwein.

After returning to Stuttgart, we paid a visit to the Christmas Markets there before collapsing in a heap back at the hotel.

  • And now... Strasbourg

    1 Disember 2023, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Our next stop was Strasbourg, a lovely town in France just over the border on the Rhine River.

It was snowing quite heavily when we left Stuttgart this morning, but it makes for some beautiful scenery.

With a myriad of rivers and canals, Strasbourg is quite a stunning place. There's not much I can say about the place, I'll just let the photos do the talking.

But more importantly, we discovered Vin Chaud... the French equivalent to Glühwein. Prost!

  • Day Trip to Colmar

    3 Disember 2023, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ -2 °C

The weather cleared up today, so we decided to take a train down to Colmar, a small town famous for its old style buildings. Of course, clear weather means cold weather and it was -5 when we headed out... yikes!

It's a pretty little town and had lots of interesting Christmas Markets to explore. Visited quite a few shops, more so just to warm up than do any real shopping.

  • Strasbourg at Night

    4 Disember 2023, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The city is beautiful during the day, but wandering the streets at night is absolutely stunning.

Last day today, heading back to Germany tomorrow.

  • Visiting Friends in Nuremberg

    5 Disember 2023, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

Our next destination was Nuremberg, where we wanted to catch up with friends who have been here for a number of years.

Gabe, Daniele and their daughter Jolena drove down to meet us and we spent some time with them touring the Christmas Markets (of course), sampling Glühwein and just taking it all in.

It was great to catch up after such a long time. They volunteered to play tour guide over the next few days, so we're looking forward to seeing some of the smaller towns around Nuremberg... Stay tuned!

  • Mmmmmm... Deutsches Essen

    8 Disember 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

We've had a variety of different food, but thought we should show you some off the most excellent German cuisine.

There's a lot of meat, but vegetarian is well catered for. And Spätzle... egg noodles kind of like gnocchi but really light and absolutely delicious.

My favourite so far was the baked onions stuffed with pork and served on buttery mashed potatoes. Finished off with a beautiful sauce made from smoked beer.

    I love Germany...

  • Bamberg und Hemhofen

    9 Disember 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

We stayed the night with Gabe and Daniele in Hemhofen so we could visit the lovely town of Bamberg.

Mind you, we wasted half the day trying to get our phones sorted. But in the end we were eventually successful in getting a couple of German phone numbers and a big data package (thanks Daniele).

There's so much we didn't get to see here, so we'll definitely come back early next year when it's a bit warmer.

  • Regensburg

    11 Disember 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

We left our friends in Nuremberg and headed south to Regensburg, a Bavarian town on the Danube River. The river was flooded, probably due to snow melt from the big storms they had a couple weeks back.

It's a nice place with narrow streets and very few cars in the Old Town. Originally, this was a Roman outpost, so there are lots of places where the original stone walls were incorporated into the town buildings.

There's an old bridge that crosses the Danube that was built in the 12th century, connecting the old and new towns.

And the good news is they have great Christmas Markets.. We enjoyed wandering the markets munching on sausages washed down with Glühwein.

  • Prague

    13 Disember 2023, Republik Czech ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Next stop on our hunt for the best Christmas Markets is Prague. This is a fascinating city with so much to see. But we're only popping in for a couple days while the markets are on, returning for New Year's to explore in more detail.

The markets weren't as big as some of the others, but their Christmas tree was spectacular.

And yes, they have delicious food and mulled wine.

  • A Day in Dresden

    15 Disember 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

While exploring the markets in Prague, we met a lady who told us that the locals all went up to Dresden for the markets because they were so much better.

Well, that was like a red flag to a bull... So we jumped on a quick (?) 2 and a half hour train for a day trip to Dresden.

And we were not disappointed. The markets were brilliant. There was a huge variety of market stalls and they love to decorate everything with little scenes depicting various Christmas characters.

By far this has been the best Market so far, although Prague still holds the title of best Christmas Market tree.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to explore the city itself, so I guess we'll just have to come back.

  • Reunion in Venice

    16 Disember 2023, Austria ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We made our way to Venice this morning to meet up with Jarrod for a few weeks. It was great to see him again after 6 months. We have a lot to catch up on.

Venice was very busy on the weekend... Most cafes had a big queue of people waiting to get in, so we headed for our accommodation and eventually found a nice Italian restaurant.

It was dark by the time we finished lunch, picked up Jarrod's bag and made it back to the unit. Mind you, it gets dark at 4.

So quickly popped out to a grocery store to get some supplies and called it a day.

  • A Handsome, Lively City

    17 Disember 2023, Austria ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Frédéric Chopin once said "Vienna is a handsome, lively city, and pleases me exceedingly.”. I couldn't agree more.

This was our first day of sightseeing and there was a lot to take in. Being Sunday, it was a bit busy, but still enjoyable.

The plan today was to focus on the Christmas Markets, sample Glühwein and... eat. Basically the same plan we've had since we arrived.

The weather was brilliant, blue skies and a balmy 10 degrees. I had to take my jumper off 😯.

There was lots to see. The narrow streets and cobble stones make for a fascinating journey. Words to describe the city are hard, so I'll just leave you with some photos.

    18 Disember 2023, Austria ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We had a delightful few days exploring Vienna. It truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. But haven't seen them all yet, so we'll see.

Today we paid a visit to some of the many museums around Vienna... here's some more photos.

    More photos to come...

    20 Disember 2023, Austria ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Today we paid a visit to the Spanish Riding School to see the famous Lipizzaner stallions in a training session.

We then went to the Vienna Natural History Museum, which is a magnificent building with thousands of exhibits. Very interesting...

Hit some more Christmas Markets on the way home... As you do... 😁

  • Budapest

    22 Disember 2023, Hungary ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

We have arrived in Budapest, where we will settle in for a week and celebrate Christmas. I didn't realise that the city was the result of the unification of the cities of Buda and Pest in 1873. Makes sense...

It's a bustling place and not as pristine as Vienna, but I like it. It has a bit of a Soviet feel to it, really interesting

Not to mention the food is most excellent, and so is the beer. And a lot cheaper than Vienna.

It's a fair sized city as well... Clever me booked the accommodation a few hundred metres from the train station. Only to discover our train arrives at a different station that's a couple kilometres away 🙄. I will either be really fit or disabled by the end of the week.
