• Monte Igueldo, via Funicular

    We walked along the concha beach on a misty day to Monte Igueldo. Known for its historic funicular railway--one of the oldest in the Basque Country-and its amusement park.  Sorry, but our review is it's old and a bit dingy. 

    The Tower atop Monte Igueldo is part of the Castillo de la Mota, a fortress originally constructed in 1194 by King Sancho Vll of Navarre over an earlier watchtower built in the previous century.
    The  tower played a crucial defensive role for San Sebastián, witnessing numerous sieges and battles from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.  Restored and declared a National Monument (1921). I hiked to the top of the tower, cool but a bit scary.
