  • San Sebastian

    June 12, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

San Sebastian ( Donostia = SS in Basque).

San Sebastián has a population of approximately 190,000 and was founded in 1180.

Famous for La Concha Beach, one of Europe's best urban beaches, known for its beautiful shell-shaped bay, shallow waters, and scenic surroundings, including the island of Santa Clara .

The city is renowned for its pintxos culture--small snacks, typically enjoyed with drinks in local bars.   We can attest that it's fun bar hopping, and they are different every bar.

We strolled along the Paseo de la Concha, a beachfront promenade with sculptures and stunning views.  We hiked up Monte Urgull, which offers historical sites and great views in every direction

  • The Hike to Jesus

    June 13, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

The Monumento al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, located atop Mount Urgull's castle, is a striking statue of Jesus standing over 12 meters tall. Created by artist Federico Coullaut in 1950, it offers breathtaking views of the bay and Old Town below.

Some of us enjoyed the pleasant walk to the monument through lush greenerymore than others

  • Pinxto's of San Sebastian

    June 14, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We ate our way through this fun city. Every bar has a few standards, but often are known for something special. We ate from the sky, land, and sea and enjoyed almost all of them. Seared pig, jamon, oysters, scallops, foie gras, sardines & anchovies, and even sea urchent. What a great experience, most consumed standing at the bar with a txakoli (local white wine) that is consumed like water. Meeting new people from around the world getting and giving recommendations on the next pintxos was a lot of fun. We are onto Tappas in Barcelona (roll the "th" in Barcelona). Cheers to what comes next.Read more

  • Monte Igueldo, via Funicular

    June 15, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

We walked along the concha beach on a misty day to Monte Igueldo. Known for its historic funicular railway--one of the oldest in the Basque Country-and its amusement park.  Sorry, but our review is it's old and a bit dingy.

The Tower atop Monte Igueldo is part of the Castillo de la Mota, a fortress originally constructed in 1194 by King Sancho Vll of Navarre over an earlier watchtower built in the previous century.
The  tower played a crucial defensive role for San Sebastián, witnessing numerous sieges and battles from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.  Restored and declared a National Monument (1921). I hiked to the top of the tower, cool but a bit scary.

  • La Sagrada Familia

    June 17, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

"To do things right, you need to love, then tenique." Antonio Gaudi

    This place is amazing!

The first stone of La Sagrada Familia was laid on March 19, 1882, under the direction of architect Francisco de Paula del Villar.  Antoni Gaudi took over the project in 1883 and assumed responsibility for the project, radically transforming the original neo-Gothic design into his own unique vision.
Still unfinished after more than 140 years
despite ongoing construction for over a century.  It is expected to be complete in 2026. —100 years after Gaudí’s death.

When completed, it will be the tallest church in the world. The central tower will reach 172 meters.
The 18 towers have symbolic meaning:
The basilica will feature 18 towers: 12 for the apostles, 4 for the evangelists, 1 for the Virgin Mary, and the tallest for Jesus Christ.  It has 3 iconic grand facades, each with deep symbolic meaning: the Nativity (birth of Christ), the Passion (suffering and death), and the Glory (heaven and resurrection).

Antoni Gaudí is buried in the crypt of the basilica, specifically in the Chapel of the Virgin of Carmen.  Gaudi was hit by a tram, no one recognized him, and for 3 days, he was in a hospital for the poor and died alone.

In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated La Sagrada Familia as a minor basilica, elevating its religious status

  • Park Guell

    June 17, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

A very interesting park with many foot paths to explore, nice afternoon.

Originally a failed housing project, mostly due to the very steep hillside.

Park Güell was initially conceived as a residential estate for Barcelona’s wealthy elite. Eusebi Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design a garden city with 60 houses, but due to poor sales and logistical challenges, only two houses were ever built and the project was abandoned in 1914

The park is one of Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic works, showcasing his unique style inspired by natural forms and organic shapes. Gaudí’s vision is evident throughout the park, from the serpentine benches to the mosaic-covered structures.

Opened as a public park in 1926 after the failure of the housing project, the land was eventually purchased by the City of Barcelona. Park Güell officially opened to the public as a municipal park in 1926, the same year Gaudí died.

Antoni Gaudí himself lived in one of the two houses built on the estate from 1906 until his death in 1926. This house is now the Gaudí House Museum, open to visitors

  • Montserrat & the Black Modonna

    June 18, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Great morning and perfect weather, a beautiful monastery and basilica. Photos don't do it justice, either the views or basilica.

Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain range near Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, known for its striking pink conglomerate rock formations and serrated appearance, which inspired its name meaning "serrated mountain" in Catalan

In 1025, Abbot Oliba of Ripoll founded a Benedictine monastery near the site where, according to legend, shepherds discovered the statue of the Virgin Mary in a cave (Santa Cova) in the 9th century

Montserrat quickly became a major pilgrimage site, renowned for miracles attributed to the Virgin, known as "La Moreneta" due to her dark skin.
The monastery became an independent abbey in 1409.
The basilica's initial construction began in the 16th century. During the Peninsular War, French troops destroyed the monastery and basilica in 1811

In 1881, Pope Leo XIII granted the church the status of minor basilica and proclaimed the Virgin of Montserrat the Patron Saint of Catalonia

The Basilica of Montserrat remains a vital religious, cultural, and pilgrimage site, home to a community of 49 Benedictine monks and the revered statue of the Virgin of Montserrat (the Black Modonna)

  • Oller De Mas, Wine Tour

    June 18, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Laura did not do well on the windy drive down the mountain road. Upon arriving, poor Laura was under the weather. When Laura found out that our "cute" guide was the son of the owner of the winery, she "upped" the creep factor and felt better quickly. Amazing the healing effect of a cute boy, future owner of a winery in Spain, can have.

Great wine in a beautiful setting, a lot of fun.

  • Coast of Brava Tour, Girona

    June 19, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

The Costa Brava (Catalan;Spanish:"Wild Coast" or "Rough Coast") is a costal region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. Sources differ on the exact definition of the Costa Brava. Usually it can be regarded as stretching from the town of Blanes, northeast of Barcelona, to the French border – in other words, it consists of the coast of the province of Girona.

Girona is a great little town famous for biking, and the Effel Bridge is well worth a visit. Some locations on Game of Thrones.

  • Casa Batllo, Gaudi designed house

    June 20, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Like everything Gaudí designed, Casa Batlló is only identifiable as Modernisme in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, has unusual tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. There are few straight lines, and much of the façade is decorated with a colorful mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís). The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the lance of Saint George (patron saint of Catalonia, Gaudí's home), which has been plunged into the back of the dragon.

Antoni Gaudí did not live at Casa Batlló. The house was originally built by Emilio Sala Cortés and purchased by Josep Batlló y Casanovas in 1903, who then commissioned Gaudí to renovate it between 1904 and 1906. The Batlló family lived in the main floor (the noble floor) of Casa Batlló, while the other flats were rented out. Gaudí was the architect and designer of the renovation but did not reside there; he lived elsewhere, including in his studio at the temple of the Sagrada Familia.
