It all started with a Hurricane, Florence, that set a path directly towards the Carolina coast, due to hit the day we were to fly out. Our trip turned into a logistical race, with Dale boarding up the house while I changed travel arrangements to drive to Atlanta for 6 hours, stay at a pet friendly hotel and then board the dog and cat. We couldn’t fit 4 adults, large suitcases, backpacks, dog (Dunbar) and cat (Moon) into my Murano, so Dale and Reinhart drove separately in a well used Jeep with the pets while Josie and I breezed along in my nice car.

Somewhere around 600,000 people evacuated that day. Did mention that it was a mandatory evacuation, due to a Category 2+ hurricane heading our way?

Along the way, the jeep developed cooling problems, so Dale and Rein (age 90) had to drive with the heat on on this hot, humid day, so that the car wouldn’t overheat.

We made it to Atlanta, took the pets to a PetSmart Pet Hotel where they will spend 10 days in luxury. The jeep will be at the dealer while we are gone and my pet-and-jeep-knowledgeable brother will be the emergency contact for both.

We have flown to Vancouver to await our cruise at the very nice Marriott Parq, staying until Sunday.Read more

Ahhh, total relaxation with no cell phone service, no text messages, not even Netflix. Cruising the Inside Passage, viewing the occasional whale or other wildlife, it is a chance to hang out with Dale’s sister Elaine and her 2 daughters, Charmille and Jannelle. C&J organized this family trip, treating Rein and Jo for his 90th birthday.

Do You Know Juneau?

Eagles, whales, freshest seafood, beautiful weather, and, according to C&J, very cute mountain men type waiters, here in Juneau.

Quote of the day: “We’ve got tail!” (Jannelle, on the whale watch). In fact we got double tail, 2 right after another.

And a big beautiful glacier, Mendenhall, along with other glacier and snow-pack peaks seen on our whale watch.Read more

Skagway into the Yukon

The Yukon gold rush of the 1890s brought thousands to this region, mostly men seeking their fortunes, but some women as well. The trip was arduous, conducted on foot and with pack animals—in fact 3000 horses and mules died in the -20 degree winters. The boom ended and now this area is sparsely populated, except for cruise ships.

We traveled via bus to the Yukon and First Nation lands and via train back to Skagway. Our trip was not as arduous as the gold rush but it was a delight to see how much the family enjoyed it.

Glacier Bay, Alaska and America's beauti

Boom! Writing this note, the Johns Hopkins Glacier calves a largish piece, crashing into the bay (technically a fjord). 33 stories tall, jagged peaks of ice, the Glacier Bay National Park receives almost all of its visitors via cruise ship. The Johns Hopkins Glacier is normally closed, only opening September 1 to visitors, because of fragile environment and breeding grounds for sea lions.

It is a glorious park, lined with Glaciers but also sea lions, bears, and sea otters. There was a small 4 person Zodiac boat, perhaps National Park Service, navigating amongst chunks of ice in the bay.Read more

Low Key Ketchikan

This is the end of cruising season, so Ketchikan is filled with clearance sales. Dale and I walked the town and enjoyed the sunshine and fresh air. High Tea in the Dining Room was lovely, offering an opportunity to chat with a table of ladies from Vancouver.Read more

Last Day Cruising

Lazy day spotting whales, hanging out at the pool, and of course, eating the excellent food. Baked Alaska for dessert.

Last night for the family to hang out after dinner, talking and enjoying and relaxing. We disembark in Vancouver at 8 am tomorrow then go to Seattle to fly home Monday.Read more
