      Dili

      May 20, 2023 in East Timor ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste, the smallest and newest country in Asia. And this is the least visited country in Asia.
The 1st picture is the Christ the King statue on a hilltop overlooking Dili and the harbor. It is reminiscent of Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio.
The 2nd picture is the presidential palace, and the 3rd picture is a portion of the parliament building. The 4th picture is of a former presidential house that has been converted to a museum commemorating the life and presidency of Jose Ramos-Horta. Mr Horta received the Nobel Peace prize which is show in the 5th picture.
The 6th picture is one of several traditional markets in town.
The 7th picture commemorates a dark time. When the people is Timor-Leste voted overwhelmingly for a independence, the anti-independence group went on a rampage and scorched earth retreat. It became a genocide. This cemetery is when those killed at the time are buried. This particular monument is to a journalist who brought news of the killing to the world community, cementing international support for independence.
The 8th and 9th pictures are of the Roman Catholic cathedral.
The last picture is of the headquarters of the political party and that became the party of the early national government. As is typical of revolutions, the group leading the rebellion often takes power in the new government. That is the case here, and this is the party descended from that group. They remain a political party, albeit in opposition these days.
Our visit coincided with both the national (independence) day and national elections. So many places were closed

No One Expects the Spanish Inquisition

      January 19, 2020 in East Timor ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Life is pretty awesome, especially when the unexpected happens. First unexpected thing was an invite to dinner tonight by NUTS ON and his wife. So, we roll up to this cool place across the street from the beach, and sit down for a couple beers. THEN, we get an invitation for a ride in the only stretch limo in East Timor. Not saying no to that, so off we go. Turns out, this was David Bowie's limo, shipped here from the US. Does a lot of wedding support, parties, etc, and it just so happens the owner is a hasher. We rode around Dili for about an hour, all sorts of picture takers on the street, we are jammin on the inside, listening to mostly 70s and 80s rock, but a few newer cuts like Ed Sheeran. Sometimes you just never know what will happen. We then went back for a delicious dinner, and songs around the table. Great times in East TImor. Don't miss out, book your tickets today. ON ON.Read more

Dili Dili - On On to the Dili H3

      January 17, 2020 in East Timor ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Had an awesome trail with the Dili H3 in East Timor, great fun. It was a bit of a struggle getting through customs and immigration at the airport, but once on the other side, the fun really began. There are a limited number of ATMs here, and both at the airport were only giving account balances, which we later found out just meant they had no cash left. So we spied a mall about a mile from the airport . . . how much for the taxi? $10 US . . . well, how much to our hotel (8 Kms away), $10. Easy choice, off we go to the hotel. We had just enough cash on hand to pay the taxi, the hotel deposit, and the hash. We received excellent hashpatality as former (and stand in for the day) Hash Master, “NUTS ON” so kindly picked us up at our hotel, and took us to the hash. As it was explained, it was the rainy season, so there would be no marks. Past experience during the rainy season has shown that trails were often getting washed away, so we just followed the hares on a pre-planned trail. The start was up on a road side hilltop, and the hares had nowhere to go but up or down. So up we went. After reaching the top, we made our way down to the beach. Do you know what comes next? That’s right, climb back up the hill to the finish. Once all had returned, the circle commenced right there on the side of a dirt road, cars and trucks blowing by covering us with dust. The hash lays out a tarp, and when you come up you get down on your knees, basically on the dirt road, and enjoy the life-giving nectar we all so crave. Many songs were sung, many stories were told, and then the “Prick of the Week” was awarded. The voting was going all one way, until the acting GM stood up and kicked over the sacred mug . . . and that was the end of story. After many beers, we made our way to the On On On. Dili Hash is awesome, make sure you visit someday. On On.Read more

We joined a group in the centre of Dili for a ride around the Hera loop (30km), a ride we did many times when we lived in Dili. Walk to Abara - Atauro - Timor Leste

      August 23, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Woke to a nice sunrise over Timor Island. After a great breakfast at Barrys, we collected our packed lunch and headed across Atauro towards Mario's at Abara. A rough dusty road led up the mountain across rugged limestone ridges. Over the top we followed little local tracks through shady gorges, past villages and pig pens eventually teaching the cost on the other side of the island. We followed the beach to Mario's, where we took to the water for a snorkel over the reef just of shore. There were thousands of colourful fish over the shallow parts of the reef, and a steep deep bank leading into the depths with loads of larger reef fish dashing around. We warmed up on the bamboo pontoon and made our way bank to the little resort to eat our lunch. It was a hot but enjoyable walk back, tempered by some cold Cooper's ale.Read more
