Read more
Emily Embo 🇬🇧 Working in the holiday park For a week and a half now, we've been working at the Holiday Park, where various types of accommodations are offered. These include spaces for campervans and tents, as well as various cabins and cottages. Our task is to keep these, along with the communal kitchens and bathrooms, clean. During our orientation, we were assisted by three girls from the Czech Republic who have been here since May and are now continuing their journey to the North Island. Our team is truly diverse, with women from Canada, Uruguay, and New Zealand. The job is actually scheduled for five hours a day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, with the holidays now in full swing, there's much more work to be done. The tasks are simple but physically quite demanding. Fortunately, we can use the sauna and hot pools, and we do. On Wednesday, we had a farewell barbecue for the Czech girls and then went to the hot pools just as a thunderstorm rolled in—a fantastic atmosphere! We sang a lot (including Karel Gott), had drinks, and laughed. It's a pity the girls have moved on now. That's how it goes when you're traveling—many great friendships and just as many farewells. Emily Embo 🇬🇧Part 2: Meanwhile, we've settled into Te Anau. The long road along the lake is perfect for jogging. There are many businesses along the shore that offer a variety of leisure activities, from historical boat tours to jet boating with subsequent bike rides and even helicopter or seaplane tours. The choices are overwhelming because there are so many options. You might be thinking all of this sounds a bit expensive, and yes, you're right. However, we get discounts from our job, 30% off our Doubtful Sound trip, and soon we plan to book the jet boat tour where we'll save even more, 50%. I think we've found the right job. If we were working in a cafe, we'd have to pay €230 per week for a pitch, but now it's only €30, lol. So, we can save money even though we're working fewer hours, which I think is great. And when we want to do something without spending money, we just go hiking. After all, we have the Fiordland National Park right on our doorstep. I can hardly wait to spend the next nine weeks here. Spring is slowly but surely arriving. We had three days of non-stop rain. However, yesterday and today the weather has improved again, and we hope it stays this way!
