  • See you soon again!

    July 15, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

That's a promise, see you soon again, Northern Highlands of Scotland. I'm totally in love with this area. Lovely people, breathtaking landscape and wonderful accommodation. This rainbow was a last greeting from the last morning, taken from our cottage.
But for now it's goodbye. We're off to the Isle of Lewis.
Day 75 means also - we are already in the second half of our journey. Time flies...

  • Sabbath

    July 15, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We have arrived in Lewis. Lovely cottage. Lovely location (Callanish Stones seen out of the window).
But have been very surprised by the message from our host... Tomorrow is Sunday. All shops closed. Even tourist attractions are closed. Restaurants mainly closed. And no washing nor playing games??? We've learned that in Lewis they live a very, let's say traditional, life. I'm worried now about taking out my camera tomorrow...Read more

  • Good builders they had

    July 16, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Brochs are roundhouse buildings found throughout Atlantic Scotland.
Dun Carloway Broch is the best preserved broch in Scotland, parts of the old wall still reach 9 metres high. You can still go inside and even climb stairs. Not bad after 2000 years, I just wish modern builders could build this long lasting...Read more

  • Rough sleeping

    July 16, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Even though it was pouring rain, no, BECAUSE it was pouring down, I was determined to look out for some shielings. I found the bleak weather suited the atmosphere of the often abandoned and derelict huts better than the sunshine.

Shielings on the Isle of Lewis were simple huts where the women and children took the animals and lived for the summer months. Some are still used by local families as weekend retreats and peat-cutting bases.
But most are abandoned and in decay, together with the colourful exterior, the storm and rain produced an almost surreal and spooky ambiance. Very Lewis style.

  • The fear of fire 🔥

    July 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

At the Shawbost Norse Mill and Kiln you see a lot of warning signs, buckets, fire blankets etc. The danger of losing these great preserved and with love restored buildings is great as they're thatched.
The mill and kiln remained active until the 1930s.

  • Explosive

    July 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This Whale Bone Arch shows two bones of the lower jaw of a Blue Whale and were removed from a beached Whale that came ashore in 1920. I cannot believe how big they are 😳😳😳

The harpoon that is shown in one picture was still in the whale, however the explosive charge in the Harpoon's head had failed to explode. Therefore, both Whale and Harpoon were intact.

The Crofter that dealt with it was lucky not have been injured when the Harpoon's head finally exploded in his shed.

  • Sheltered

    July 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

In Port Ness, where Gaelic is still the main language, fishermen get shelter by two very long piers and slipways. A great effort to protect their boats from the rough Atlantic.

  • Summer and Winter within minutes

    July 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Just minutes before I took these shots at Dun Eistean, we had a Pizza for lunch outside in the sun. And someone snipped with the finger and there was a storm with rain and gales. The weather is always changeable in Scotland, but Lewis is really good at that...
The bridge over to a little islet with a medieval fort is REALLY scary as it is only a metal grid and you can see all the way down into the wild water of the Atlantic.

  • The Guinness Record Butt

    July 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

This location is really pure drama. The sea has worked here like a sculptor and shaped the landscape fabulously.
Mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the windiest place in the UK. The Butt of Lewis has cliffs up to 80 feet high and is the location of a 121 ft high lighthouse.Read more

  • MacLeods and Mackenzies

    July 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    St Columba’s Church UI
is one of the most important archaeological sites on the Isle of Lewis. It was the main church during the medieval period and it is a burial place for the MacLeod chiefs and the Mackenzies who controlled the island in later years.
A part was roofed again recently to protect some ancient grave stones.
The best is the setting: it's just next to the Atlantic.

  • Woebegone

    July 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Woebegone is the first word which comes to my mind if I want to describe the charging situation in Lewis and Harris.
Here are so many EVs driving around. Many more than I have seen in other parts of Scotland. Still they have only a rapid charging station in Stornoway. For both islands... You have to queue for 2 hours or longer to get your slot.
That only one in Harris is out of order and nobody repairs it. A handful of 22kW chargers are spread over both islands.
But here in Uig of Lewis, in the middle of almost nowhere, we were positively surprised. A well working 22kW charger plus tearoom and picnic tables. And the view...!!!

    July 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The Outer Hebrides have some of the most striking cliffs and stacks in the world.
The island's history of volcanic eruption has formed an amazing, jagged and dramatic coastline.
These are the magnificent Mangersta stacks on the West coast of Lewis!Read more

  • Stonehenge older brother

    July 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

The Callanish Stones are one of Scotland’s most magnificent and best-preserved Neolithic monuments. The cross-shaped setting of stones were erected 5,000 years ago and are therefore older than Stonehenge.
The atmosphere is just amazing in the evening. You can still walk around freely, no fences, and you can feel the power and the vibes .

  • Embrace simplicity

    July 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Dating back 300 years, the village of Gearrannan was a crofting settlement containing a cluster of so called blackhouses. For centuries, these primitive one-room homes were shared by both humans and their livestock—the norm for farmers at the time—and separated by only a half wall divider.
The village was inhabited until the early 70s and then abandoned. Luckily in 2001 they restored the houses and opened an open air museum. Some of the blackhouses are now self-catering accommodations.
