Dunguaire Castle was built in 1520 by the O’Hynes clan on the picturesque shores of Galway Bay.
In the summer one can book a medieval castle banquet.
I personally was shocked how many (thousands of) coach tourists are spit out at the castle for a short visit. Spoils the atmosphere...Leia mais

  • Very moody

What a great day with dark stormy skies and a cold light to photograph the magnificent old monastery of Clonmacnoise!

St Ciarán founded his monastery on the banks of the River Shannon in the 6th Century. The monastery flourished and became a university of its time with students from all over Europe.

The ruins include a Cathedral, two round Towers, three high crosses, nine Churches and over 700 Early Christian grave slabs.

  • Light for the route England - Ireland

    31 de agosto de 2023, Irlanda ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Howth Harbour Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse and was built in 1817 to help guide shipping into the harbour which acted as the terminus for the packet service between Ireland and England.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1982 and replaced by a modern pole light on an adjacent extension of the pier. However, the old lighthouse remains an iconic landmark in Howth. It's nice to spend an evening there. But if you think it's getting quiet after sunset you're mistaken. As later it got as busier it was, so many pubs and bars are at the harbour...Leia mais

  • Dublin's heroine

    1 de setembro de 2023, Irlanda ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Molly Malone is a semi-historical, semi-legendary figure who is commemorated in the song "Cockles and Mussels", a Dublin anthem. The song tells the fictional tale of a fishwife who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin and died young, of a fever.

She is often referred to as "the tart with the cart" 😅

Whether she is a real person or a fictional character, Molly Malone is a beloved figure in Dublin. She is a symbol of the city's spirit and its vibrant culture.

  • Trinity without books

    1 de setembro de 2023, Irlanda ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The lovely Trinity College is always worth a visit.
But it also hosts the library with the Long Room with 200.000 books, which looks like straight out of Hogwarts. But as we found out, all the books are taken out. First time in centuries, typical for my luck... And I didn't want to pay 18.50 EUR for empty wooden shelves, so I rather skipped the library and enjoyed the campus for free.Leia mais

Enjoying the last light on Baily Lighthouse in Howth.
Minutes later we were standing in thick fog which came out of nowhere. The lenses and filters were steamed up within seconds. Irish weather is always good for a surprise...
The lighthouse itself is a beautiful red-brick structure that was built in 1814. It is one of the two major land lighthouses in Dublin.

To get to this viewpoint one has to do a bit of uphill walking. Usually not too difficult, but today it was so hot, we nearly didn't make it with the heavy camera gear..
