It's a long drive to get there ay it?

    June 15, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Hi there muckers, Bertie here to tek you through their latest trip, and a whopper it is as well. Lots of miles to stretch me rubbers and wim off to the tunnel as usual. Wow, we bombed down the motorway, got there 2 hours before time, and got put on the earlier train, so them pleased. Exit to France and did a couple of hours stopping at an oss farm for the night in Belgium . Great pitch in a quiet village. Next day onward, using free motorways, topping up with cheap diesel in Luxembourg and into Germany where, again, a peaceful night on a wine farm but a bit of a rainy night. So, five countries so far, potentially another five to go. On we go again to reach the start really of our tour at Fussen and the start of the German Alpine route, we hope to drive to Salzburg in Austria.
Stopping at a stelplatz in Fussen town (bit of a car park really but handy for a visit tomorrow). Got free bus passes at the park, so he is well happy and cor wait for tomorrow. Two fairy tale castles and a lake here, so lots to see. But rainy, so they am reviewing the route for the next few days.

    A Rain-out to Remember

    May 30, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Well, not unexpected, but planned games today were cut short by thunderstorms. We made it as far as the bottom of the 4th inning in the 1st game - just enough to make it an official game with the Atomics losing 4-2. Unfortunate, as Atomics had a real chance to win that game despite the score at the time. And the day started out so nice!

The second game, which would have been the one that Scott would have pitched in, will apparently be re-scheduled and played at another time. Scott did go 1-3 hitting in the first game and scored the Atomics first run after hitting a 2-out single, then advancing to 2B where he spent a bit of time dancing around and drawing pick-off throws and (I think) getting their pitcher a little rattled, and eventually being plated by a double from the Atomics big hitter.

I had an enjoyable and relatively brief trudge in the rain back to my hotel where I could start my shoes and clothes to drying and get a hot shower and a nap. Scott rode back to Garching with Stefan.

Grabbing some dinner as I write this at an Italian place, La Perla, near the hotel; dining al fresco, and by “fresco” I mean chilly. Only outside tables were available as I didn’t have a reservation for an inside table. The restaurant I chose is in appreciation and honor of the Royal Bavarian’s baseball team, as it is a major sponsor of their club as you may notice if you look closely at their uniforms.

Pix from the field today are attached.

Tomorrow I make my way to Zurich, my last stop and point of departure back to Honolulu in a couple days.

And the hard rain has decided to come down again. Brrrrr….

Cows and Swans and a Cat

    May 29, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Departed Garching this morning (no sleeping in) after meeting Scott at the Garching Bahnhof. Made our way to Munich Hbf then jumped a regional train and then a bus to eventually arrive on the northern foothills of the Alps in Füssen. Enjoyed seeing the pastoral scenery and many healthy looking dairy cows along the way, not to mention other livestock and a couple free-range swans visible out the train window (they were huge!).

Dumped bags at the hotel, I did some work and Scott explored, then we headed to Schloss Neuschwanstein via more buses. Did our tour then walked back down from the schloss in the rain to await our final bus of the day back to town. Four separate trains and four (six for me) buses today.

The castle tour was interesting and though not the very aged medieval type of castle that Scott and I prefer, it was still interesting to see first hand and the surrounding landscape was stunning despite the cloudy and rainy weather. Apparently King Ludwig II had a thing for swans (and knights in search of the holy grail among other things…), so we saw them in the artwork everywhere inside the schloss and in many locations around town.

Got back to our hotel and swapped out wet socks and shoes for slippers (Scott anyway) and roamed about the town for a place for dinner. Ended up at this medieval-themed restaurant serving up tourist fair, but we got the Bavarian food we wanted. Not much was open at 8:30p on a Wednesday. Scott had this amazing encounter with the restaurant house cat that came over to him for licks and scritches. After a few minutes of that it curled up on a seat pillow and fell asleep next to Scott.

Just about pau for the night. Grabbing a drink at a hopping place next to our hotel and then on to bed. It’s still game day tomorrow as far as we know though the weather is looking very dodgy still.

    34. Neuschwanstein

    March 9, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Instead of driving to the car park closest to the castle and paying a hefty parking fee , we decided to park a couple of miles away and cycle to the start of the footpath up to the famous castle . James towed Maddy in her little dog trailer , which is always comical and good fun - James did very well towing Maddy up the hills , considering she is 23 kg !
The walk up to the castle was very steep , but didn't take nearly as long as what we thought it would . Once at the entrance of the beautiful castle , we discovered that it was only 18 euros each to complete an audio guide of the castle . We were under the impression that it was going to be 50 euros each when researching the night before ! We were absolutely gutted we didn't know this sooner as we couldn't enter the castle with Maddy.
None the less , we enjoyed walking around the grounds of the majestic castle and stopped off for a picnic before walking back down .
After all that walking and cycling , we made the decision to drive back to the campsite we had stayed at the previous night so we could shower and chill .
We spent the evening planning our next moves and decided that we were going to visit the romantic old town of Füssen before going back to Neuschwanstein castle to complete the tour . We had a chicken and veg sir fry in preparation for another active day tomorrow !

    King's Castles

    October 8, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, "Mad" King Ludwig's famous castles. The first is actually the older one, where he actually grew up. The second is his more famous "fairytale castle project," and was the inspiration for the castle in Sleeping Beauty. Although newer, it was built over the ruins of an older medieval castle (Hohenschwangau was also built on top of an older site). Pics also include famous Mary's Bridge viewpoint (also shown from afar, at the castle) and hike to nearby higher (and less crowded) overlook.Read more

    Achte Station

    May 4 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Füssen - a historic resort town

    July 31, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

I had a great 2 nights here. It’s a great spot to base myself for a few days in this beautiful part of the world. The main attraction here are the castles and the lakes and I ticked off both of those - 5 star scenery. My hotel was so cute too. It was only 3 star but felt so much better than any 3 star hotel I’d stayed in before. The only downside of the area is the price tag! It’s expensive here! Food and drink are crazily priced. I paid $8 AUD for a small coke at lunch the other day.

While I spent most of my time out in the countryside I did explore the old town briefly for dinner and lunch on seperate days. It’s a cute town centre with the obvious old town characteristics. Clock tower ✅, church ✅ castle looking down from above ✅, narrow pedestrian streets filled with cafe umbrellas ✅ another church ✅.

I did manage to register my walking speed on a speed check on one of the smaller streets of town. 6km/h and a smiley face from the machine. Glad I wasn’t speeding while walking 😂

That said, after 4 nights of no air conditioning anywhere, I needed a good night sleep so this afternoon checked out early (that confused the hotel to no end) and headed up to Munich for the night. It’s not the first time I’ve left somewhere early to get some sleep. Thom and I left Vienna early to escape the heat on a previous trip. While it is an extra expense, I’ve learned that feeling good is more important. Having some flexibility and room for spontaneous plans is also a plus. Next stop - Munich.

Cycling & Alpine Lake Swimming 🚴‍♂️🏊‍♂️

    July 31, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

I haven’t really done the whole exercise thing in a long while but today I decided to be sporty spice and hit the countryside on a bicycle. Ok, so I cheated a little and got an e-bike which made the experience so much more enjoyable, but still a workout. I had it on the lowest setting for most of the ride, only switching it up 2 notches to sport mode for steep hills. Cruising along at about 25km/h it was fun. So fun that I got distracted and ended up in Austria 😂.

I first rode along the river, saw the waterfall and a cute nature / kids playground area along the river. Once backtracked back into Germany I headed to Alpsee. A lake frequented by Ludwig overlooking the castles. They had a swimming area there (although to be fair you can swim from anywhere).

The swim area had change rooms, toilets and a bar as well as a beautiful jetty that went out into the lake. The jetty take was about 1inch underwater making it look really cool and be refreshing to sit in the water and hang your legs over. I went for a refreshing swim. At first the water felt really cold but once in it was so relaxing and refreshing after a morning ride. I swam around for as long as I thought my white skin + sunscreen could handle the sun before resting in the shade on the grass. This is the summer life!

It cost €3.50 to swim here, which you could avoid by swimming anywhere else in the lake, or if you buy a drink entry is free 😂. What pool in Australia would allow you to drink beer and swim! After a chill on the grass (and checking out the scenery) I decided to go ride around another lake.

Just over the hills (which I naturally went around) was Schwansee. This was more a nature reserve and had a track that went right around. At the start of the track was a cute bar and heaps of families laying in the sun or swimming off a smaller jetty. I did the full lap in about 15mins, stopping for photos a few times. One other guy had got off his bike on the far side of the lake and hopped in for a nude swim. I decided that this was his spot and didn’t join him for a ‘Call me by your name’ moment.

Instead I stopped back at the bar and had a refreshing callipo icy pole. I can see why Germans come to the lake for their summer holidays. It’s so bloody beautiful and relaxing. The water is crystal clear that when swimming you don’t know if it’s 10cm or 10m deep.

Riding back into town I decided to try turbo mode on the bike and easily got to 30km/h racing back to town. My legs still feel like they’ve had an alright workout today, and my watch even went into open water swim mode. I didn’t run today, but did lug my suitcase onto a train at speed so I’ve practically done a triathlon today 😂.

I had a lot of fun on the e-bike and would definitely do it again. If they weren’t so expensive I’d even consider getting it for getting around Melbourne.

    Ludwig’s eccentric fantasy castle 🏰🧚‍♂️

    July 30, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Having hiked for the view for Thom earlier today, my time slot for a ‘guided tour’ of the palace itself came time this afternoon. Like a human conveyor belt every 5minutes, groups of about 30 scanned through the turnstile to start their tour of the palace. Each issued with an audio guide on entry our guide merely ushered us from room to room activating the guide for each room and ensuring no one lingers too long or take any photographs.

Ludwig’s dream castle is part former solo royal residence and part fantasy project of the king that was later deemed mentally unfit and stripped of the title (and died the next day - ironic - don’t you think?). He took parts of palaces and castles he liked and replicated them together here, with the copies often being larger than the original. It seemed he was trying to relive the medieval era in a time when that way of life was become more light.

Like Ludwig before him, Walt Disney also saw things he liked in the world and adapted them to his desires. Neuschwanstein Castle is one of those Walt used for inspiration for one of the most recognisable castles in the world in Disneyland. Unlike Disney, Ludwig was a shy isolated man who didn’t want people in his palace. Now on a summer day 6,000 people pass through. I doubt he would be pleased.

While I liked seeing the eccentric mixes of styles, including a fake grotto leading off his dressing room, I felt a little like cattle being herded through as quickly as possible. Maybe I’m like Ludwig and just want a castle to myself (only child bon sharing syndrome coming through there). It is however spectacular from the outside - which is all the photos you’ll see as photography was banned inside (and unlike the Germans in Spain who fragrantly broke that rule, here they all strictly abide!).
