    Freiburg bezoeken

    August 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Read more

    Camperrückgabe Freiburg i.B.

    August 10, 2023 in Germany

Read more

Anyway, here we are in Frieberg. We had a nice couple of days next to a big park to use the trees to shade from the heatwaveRead more

    Towers, Toasts & Tiny Streets

    April 7 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Our first full day in Freiburg came with one guiding principle: structured free flow. No tight itinerary, just a general sense of direction and the freedom to follow our curiosity (and our noses).

We kicked things off with breakfast at Erste Liebe—not bad, not great, just… fine. But it served its purpose and fueled us for what was next: coffee bean hunting. Just around the corner was Elephant Beans, one of Freiburg’s standout roasters. Naturally, I had to stop by and stock up on some locally roasted beans—souvenirs with a purpose, right?

With caffeine levels topped off, we turned our attention to exploring the city. We’d normally jump on a local walking or food tour, but since we hit Freiburg just before Easter, those don’t start until next week. No worries, though—I found an audioguide app, and off we went on a DIY discovery mission.

Winding through narrow lanes, across canals, and past centuries-old facades, we pieced together Freiburg’s story bit by bit. Two highlights stood out for me:

The Münster – towering, majestic, and full of gothic drama. We were both awestruck.

Konviktstraße – hands down the cutest little street you could imagine. It’s straight out of a fairy tale, with flower boxes, cobblestones, and a whole lot of charm.

A lovely surprise? The daily market on Münsterplatz! We grabbed a couple of Lange Rote sausages (literally “long red”) and followed it up with more coffee, because… obviously. Then came the Münster tower climb. The view from up there? Worth every single step. Freiburg in the spring sun is truly a sight to behold.

Post-tour, it was time for a bit of liquid culture. First up: Freiburg’s Finest, a cool little shop where we picked up some local gin for our friends back home. The owner was super knowledgeable and the bottles? Absolute eye candy.

Then we went next level: Alte Wache, right on the Münsterplatz, where 36 local wine makers showcase the best of Baden wine. We grabbed two glasses of sparkling wine and a cheeky frozen wine treat, sat in the sunshine, and let Freiburg do its magic.

Feeling festive (read: tipsy), we headed upstairs for a sparkling wine tasting—and promptly bought more than intended. Though honestly, can one ever have too much bubbly? I think not.

Back to the hotel to safeguard our treasures, then straight out again for dinner at Großer Meyerhof, where classic Badisch comfort food helped bring us back to Earth.

Freiburg, you charming little place—you definitely know how to balance history, hedonism, and heart.

    Freiburg

    March 4 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Pause fribourgeoise !

    February 23 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Mein zweites Mal in Freiburg.

    Freiburg

    December 15, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Went to bed late and got up late. Headphones came in handy in the noisy hostel dormitory.

Doing some accounting and work in the morning in the hostel common room. Then I escape to an internet café where I have a wonderful lunch and continue on my planning for 2025.

The walking tour in the afternoon is just for me, no one else braves the penetrating humid cold accentuated by a down valley breeze. It's a fascinating history of Freiburg, the guide was truly a treasure trove of information.

Hoping for a ticket to the symphony at the door as they are sold out. I'm lucky there are a few extra and I get to attend a concert by Joseph Suk, Dvorák and Brahms center stage in a stunning modern concert hall. The Brahms symphony No 1 blew me away. There are online live concerts that can be heard on SWR kultur.

  • Day 23

    Breisach and Freiburg

    October 14, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This morning, we are going by bus to Frieburg. A German town at the foot of the Black Forest. This city of around 250 000 is newer than others we've visited. It began around the late 9th C and continued to grow during the European population explosion that ended in the 13thC.

This is the warmest area of Grtmany, with summer highs of over 40c. It is attractive to retirees, and many move here for the weather and the lifestyle.

The Church here was started in 1200 and was built by the same architects and builders as Strasbourg Cathedral, although it is much smaller. The church was finished byv1500, earlier than other larger churches, because the locals were willing to undertake the cost.

There is history of the Hapsburgs from Austria ruling the area at one time. It e perceived the back and forth between France and Germany that other areas in this region had.

An interesting fact was that prior to Napoleon, home addresses were known by names such as Black Cat. Napoleon named streets and had house numbers assigned to make it easier to find where someone lived.

We had Black Forest ham, a delicious bread, and Black Forest Cake at a lovely restaurant by the Cathedral.

There was also a market around the Cathedral where vendors were selling various sausages in a bun, fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, cheese, and wooden toys.

A lovely day. We set sail for Badil, where our cruise will end, and the next adventure begins.
