D: A Sobering Nazi History Walk

After yesterday’s light Free Tours on Foot walk showing us some of Munich’s touristy places, today’s Tour on Munich’s role in the birth and rise of Naziism was an eye-opening and heart-hurting history lesson. We walked along the same streets and visited the same buildings and places where the horrific terrorism of the Nazi Regime took hold. Why take such a tour? The path of democracies devolving into totalitarianism is marked by the same benchmarks. We are wise to know and recognize them as such benchmarks are unfolding in many nations around the world. They may even be happening in a country near you. Here are a handful of photos from today and from Munich’s dark past.Leggi altro

Wollten wir nicht nach München….

Wenn man ohne Kinder reist, reist man viel spontaner….
War heute wirklich so. Eigentlich war der Plan, auf direktem Weg nach München zu fahren….
Nur dem war dann nicht so, zumindest nicht direkt … Während der Fahrt, sagte David zu mir, er schaue noch ob wir über Lindau fahren oder wo anderes durch. Mir kam in Sinn, dass mein Lieblingsohrring Shop ja auf Schloss Salem an einer Ausstellung ist und dies ist doch gar nicht seid weg von Lindau….
Planänderung, wir fahren also über Schloss Salem :-)
Danach gab es ein herrliches Mittagessen direkt am Bodensee mit Sicht auf Mainau und anschliessend ging es dann nach München.
Am Abend, gingen wir an die Vernissage der Gallery Binder mit dem Künstler Yigal Ozeri.Leggi altro

After losing a nights sleep enroute to Munich… we were able to regroup today and naturally eating helped.

When we hit big cities, our Inner New Yorkers come out but here in Munich the roads are filled with fast cars and they abide by traffic signals with precision. For us this means not going against the light…as we do in NYC but instead waiting. It’s been a whirlwind of activity in the past 30 hours since our arrival so I’ll post the best of my photos and add some captions.Leggi altro

Viaggiatore That’s what we talked to. We heard that some people commute to work this way we saw people going down with dry bags floating along with them so they could change clothes. Honestly it was not that warm to be doing this.

Bavaria, one of Germany’s 16 states, likes to call itself the “Free State of Bavaria.” Today, our recovery day after a long flight and essentially missing a night’s sleep (I just can’t get much sleep at 40,000 feet), we became acquainted with Bavaria’s capital city, Munich. Our preferred method of becoming acquainted with a place, of course, is to walk it. So that’s what we did - around 23,000 steps worth. Helene takes way more photos than I do, so enjoy them. C’est une longue journée qui se termine avec plus de 210km au compteur, à nouveau 1700m de dénivelé positif et pas mal de courbatures. Nous avons validé le CP1 en arrivant à Munich et avons déjà traversé 3 pays en 2 jours !

L’après-midi ne s’est pas tout à fait déroulée comme prévue : pose d’une chambre à air sur un pneu tubeless suite à souci de valve, un orage qui est survenu à 16h et nous a bloqué une bonne heure et demi et 100km à faire sous la pluie.

Heureusement les paysages et les jolies villes du sud de la Bavière nous ont remonté le moral. Nous avons même vu un faon traverser tranquillement la route sans avoir peur. Les grenouilles et les crapauds étaient au rendez-vous dans la nuit noire. Et nous avons dîné dans une pizzeria pour reprendre des forces !

Enfin, nous avons croisé un dotwatcher (une personne qui suit les points GPS des coureurs de la NorthCape pour les encourager). Ce dernier était au bord de la piste cyclable à 23h dans le noir à l’entrée de Munich, sous un parapluie et pieds nus et nous a crié : « yeah, yeah, yeah, congratulations !!!! »Leggi altro

Day trip to Freising

Today we took the train to Freising which is a very cute town outside of the city. We were quickly impressed after visiting the cathedral - a beautiful rococo styled church. Because it was the 1300 year anniversary of Saint Corbinian arriving at the settlement, many parts of the church were accessible, including the crypt, the archives room, the library, the special paintings collection and the shrine. We spent over an hour exploring this incredible space which I will forever be in awe of all its immaculate details ✨

After a lunch stop, we made our way up to the hill where the oldest brewery in the world is situated, Weihenstephan. We enjoyed the nature walk, providing some nice views over the city. There was also remains from an extremely old well dating back to 811 CE which is known to have healing water 💧Leggi altro

Arriving in Munich

On Friday evening we took the night bus for 12 hours to Munich 😄 We spent the day walking around the city, drinking Bavarian beer with Brezels and enjoying the evening at a summer festival (Tollwood) which had many cute stalls, lots of food and entertainment! So far our impressions of Munich are great and we are excited to spent a long sunny week here - escaping the average weather in Amsterdam ☀️☀️✨Leggi altro

Bike Ride in Munich

We went for a nice bike ride in Europe's second most bikeable city (after Amsterdam). We saw some cool buildings with mosaics made of genuine gold that all face west so they sparkle in the sun. We also saw buildings that were destroyed in the war (along with 80% of the city) that have been rebuilt with painted false facades to replicate what they used to look like before the bombings. We ended the tour with a visit to the world's second largest beer garden in the world where Jack had a LITRE of beer and Anch had a slice of Black Forest cake.Leggi altro

Die Reise beginnt

Unsere Bikepacking Reise durch Peru und Bolivien beginnt am Flughafen München. Heute um 07:00 Uhr steigen wir in das Flugzeug, das uns nach Lima bringt.

Die Gepäckaufgabe inkl. Fahrrad war etwas ungewohnt und umständlich, hat schlussendlich aber funktioniert, obwohl wir uns versehentlich in der Priority Schlange eingereiht haben und mit den Fahrrad-Kartons fast nicht durch die Türen gekommen wären.

Jetzt freuen wir uns - nach einer sehr sehr kurzen Nacht - im Flugzeug auf etwas Schlaf.

A lunch dönor and a dinner donor

A quiet day in Garching today. Worked on catching up on some sleep and resting weary legs from wonderful trips to Bologna and Salzburg this past week. Also gave me the chance to get online and catch up on emails.

Rode my rented bike into Garching “downtown “ to bring back a dönor for lunch. Then had an unexpected dinner with Scott who came to my little apartment with a bunch of local ingredients to create a delicious charcuterie board that we enjoyed for dinner. Scott became free for the evening when the youth practice he was going to be at was cancelled due to pending thunderstorms, which finally have hit now that we’ve eaten. Scott headed back to his place to avoid the worst of the building storm. I’m in my apartment with the window open enjoying the rainfall and rolling thunder as I write this.

Tomorrow is my final full day in Garching, which has been a peaceful delight. It’ll be sad to leave but we are planning to head together to Füssen Wednesday morning where we already have our tickets to tour Schloss Neuschwanstein.Leggi altro
