    Home Field Gameday

    May 26, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

My one and only home field game day this trip. Pix and notes on today’s games.

The Atomics field is located along a busy walking/ bike path. For safety and to attract local residents to the ballpark there are signs posted on the fence along the path. The team is very encouraging of community involvement and support.

Noon game is starting with beautiful baseball weather - warm sun and cool breezes. Should be in the low to mid 70’s F today, but clouds are likely to build with possible rain later.

Atomics won the first game 9-3. Scott played a mediocre CF and went 0-3 with a walk and run scored at the plate. Weather is holding and I’m working on my 2nd sunburn of the trip. 😎

Second game is in the book. Atomics won 8-1. Only run scored by their opponent was due to a lead off double Scott gave up and then the catcher threw over the head of the third baseman on a steal of third and the runner scored. Other than that it was a 7-inning 3-hitter shutout. Truth be told it was one of the weaker teams. He also hit a double, two singles and scored 3 runs. His teammates gave him a rousing cheer after. A great game for him and a great day for the team.

The weather held and it is a beautiful evening in Garching. We’re out now for a good Bavarian dinner.

    Enjoy the pics.

    Boy in the Mini-kitchen

    May 24, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Enjoyed a tasty meal back in my hotel apartment prepared by Scott. Steak and white asparagus & mushroom risotto along with some baseball videos. He did a great job with minimal cooking implements and stovetop space. Rented a bike (like Biki) and rode around Garching for groceries prior.

Tomorrow’s plan: a day trip to Salzburg. Woohoo!

    Lotnisko w Monachium

    January 27, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

Dolecieliśmy do Monachium. Trasa z Gate’a do gate’a autobusem. Mam nadzieję że będzie za chwilkę śniadanie. Czekamy na lot do Tokio - lecimy samolotem ze Star Warsów!Read more

Munich! Did I spell that right?

    October 24, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

First glimpses of Germany through the clouds. I was dismayed I couldn't see stars all night, then it continued to be dark as we approached Germany and I told Dad I must have flipped my hours as it was still dark. He looked at me incredulously and showed me that my window was darkened. No shade, mind you but the glass darkens via a control. The Window seat was totally wasted on me. And the seats are like those on Frontier-- hard with the barest of cushions. A very uncomfortable trip but already mostly forgotten as I'm so excited to be here! Now we have to find our next flight to Rome that leaves in a couple hours. The airport food here is amazing, and I spotted my first German angel in a duty free shop selling purfume.perfume. Finally, when it comes to bathrooms, Germans have it covered. I stopped short of making a video of the cloth hand towels that mechanically unroll for you and the dissappear into the wall when you are done.Read more

    Our Southern German Cuisine

    June 2, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our German Cuisine experience lived up to all the hype. Much beer and sausage was consumed. While we expected to have choices of Knot and Brat wurst, we were often surprised to find "regional wurst" as the offer in restaurants. This denied us the chance to check boxes off our culinary check list, but we did not leave disappointed. The cuisine is very similar to that of Alsace France (although, it's probably more appropriate to reverse that). The food was heavy and filling. Our diets are starting to feel a bit "wurst" for wear.

Many of the beer halls were like small art museums, steeped in history. We were also lucky enough to take a trip to the, "Alteste Brauerei Der Welt" or the oldest brewery in the world, Weihenstephan. We actually first tried this beer by complete accident in a bar in Lucerne, Switzerland. This bar had a very deep beer menu, and Weihenstephan was a random choice. It wasn't until I noticed "seit 1040" on the bottle and busted out Google translate that I realized what I was drinking. 1040 is the year the brewery was founded! Very cool place to visit.

    August 13, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After a lengthy 3 hour and 45 minute sleep, the alarms woke us up at 7:00 AM. Don't know how we managed to get out of bed this morning because boy were we tired. Continued with the packing process which took us a full hour, we were quite messy and spread across our large hotel room. We also managed to accumulate a large number of souvenirs over the course of the two weeks. Luckily, last night we were able to stuff our boots and costume bags into one of the costume suitcases, so that freed up some volume. Brooke's suitcase was just over the weight limit and we had to move her character shoes into another bag. My checked backpack was half her weight (but that is due to all the alcohol being in her bag).

Then planned for a quick trip down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. We hit it at the worst possible time as it seems that all dance groups are leaving today and everyone wanted to eat breakfast at 8:00 AM. There was almost nowhere to sit and the line for the buffet was extra long. We grabbed a coffee and utilized the stupidity of everyone waiting in line for the first buffet and snagged some quick food from a buffet spot in the back. Sat in a couple of conference room chairs and had breakfast with a fellow dancer Jesse. Then it was back up to our room to zip up our luggage and head downstairs. We are loaded up with two costume suitcases as well, so it was a challenge to get down to the lobby. My skills with two suitcases (plus 3 backpacks) are better than Brooke's.

The tour company, Cobblestone Freeway, includes an airport transfer and has it all prearranged. There was a group of about 7 of us all leaving at the same time and we loaded up into two large vans with all of our suitcases. The ride to the airport was about 20 minutes.

The check-in process seemed terribly inefficient. They only had one desk open for economy class in our airline and she was quite slow. We were checking a total of 4 bags and were expecting to pay for the additional 2. The process to pay involved going over to a separate counter and then bring proof of payment over to the lady at the check-in desk. Weird.

Once through security we looked around for the traditional paprika chips at the airport. Couldn't find any but did manage to find some interesting flavors. Brooke got cheese chips and I grabbed crab flavour (interesting taste but I must admit I only ate half the bag).

Our first flight was a 2 hour hop over to Munich. Brooke said we should both blog on this flight. Sounds good. I set off to finish a post from 2 days ago and she proceeded to fall asleep.

When we landed in Munich we had lunch with Stephanie, Tom, and their 1 year old daughter Incarra. At this point we were discussing how in Lviv the check-in agent wasn't able to print our boarding passes for our YYZ to YYC flight (even though I checked in and selected seats for that flight yesterday). We decided to walk over to the Lufthansa service desk and see if they could. Their response was that "it was technically impossible to do this". Not impressed and slightly concerned. Also tried at a service desk closer to our gate and tried downloading the Luftansa app to see if it could work. It's going to be interesting once we get to Toronto.

Boarded the plane for a 9 hour flight. My throat is starting to feel kinda funny from the lack of sleep. Hopefully everything works out in Toronto.

Und ab gehts ✈️ (mit Verzögerung)

    April 26 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    April 18 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Boarding.

Karol i Kinga otrzymali miejsca w ostatnim rzędzie dolnego pokładu –
czyli tam, gdzie podczas wycieczek szkolnych trafiali najbardziej doświadczeni gitowie.

    – Wersja „Very Inconspicuous Passengers”?
    – Albo „Very Interesting Proximity”… do kuchni.

Symbolicznie.

    Nareszcie.
