    Faro to Portimãu

    May 7 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

The first day in the saddle can often be a bit rough. Today was no exception! But it wad nice riding for the most part. We had to contend with a few more busy roads than I like, but that was to be expected! It just made the quite back roads that much better. Portimãu was beautiful to ride in to!Read more

    Faro! Getting the bikes dialed

    May 6 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

I landed in Faro last night with just enough time to grab some dinner with Ari and hit the hay in an attempt to right my sleep schedule. Today we rode around town to make sure the bikes were all set up and feeling good. Faro is very cute and seemingly a walled city, but ill read more about that tonight. The trails around here are good, and the coastal vibe is beautiful! Everything is ready for us to start pedaling tomorrow! Tomorrow we head to Portimão, just west of Faro.Read more

    A Train, a Bus, & a Cliffside Boardwalk

    April 29 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

Our day started with a short train ride into the city of Faro. Our plan to take a 2nd train to Lagos was thwarted by a train workers strike. So, after many stops on a bus, we made it to Lagos. After walking to our accommodations and getting checked in, we found the boardwalk that took us along colorful limestone cliffs with breathtaking views of the ocean and the shoreline of eroding cliffs, crashing waves, and so much beauty. The walking was easy, the clouds gave way to warm sunshine, so we just walked and walked. It was divine!Read more

Day 24 Out and About Faro

    April 27 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Taking it easy today..
Was going to take a Bolt ( like an Uber) out however the driver kept getting lost. You can see where he is on the map......

As I was waiting, people started to pass by me with fresh produce. I looked around the corner to see a huge farmers market.

I ditched the Bolt and went to the market. Such fun
The people are so kind and generous with their offerings. I always wanted small amounts of items and they kept filling my bags up.....needless to say I will leave what I can't eat in the free bin👍

The sweet potato I got tasted great. It had a purple skin. The veggies were garden fresh all ready for a soup but I made stir-fry . Delicious with fresh strawberries for dessert.

I did have one problem today....cramping of my feet. I think it was due to dehydration from yesterday. I didn't have any electrolytes and this nice guy gave me some fresh market cucumbers that are supposed to help....I had missed 2 days of my Calcium Nd Magnesium so that wasn't good either. Anyway I went to the Farmacia and got some powdered electrolytes and I am good to go

Moved to a 10 bed mixed dorm for tonight. Seville tomorrow.....so excited!!!

Next stop on our journey: Portugal!

    April 24 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The first leg of our trip ended and we embarked on the next part of our adventure.

This time our destination is Portugal!
We will spend 5 weeks all up in Portugal, starting with 7 days in Faro.

We took the local train down from Kiel to the airport in Hamburg and arrived with 5 minutes to spare at the airport to drop our bags off after being delayed due to signal issues on the train line by about 1.5 hours...🚉

    Love the Deutsche Bahn...

When we got to Faro, we decided to walk from the airport to our hotel which was only 6km so not the worst 🚶🏼‍♀️

We ended up having an amazing dinner at a local sandwich place (Ponto expresso) and went to bed 🛏️

The next day, we got up early and started exploring Faro and it's surroundings. The 25th April is freedom day so the streets of Faro were very empty in the morning.

After a little stroll around the city, we found a nice little coffee shop (yellow bourbon) where we ordered a drip coffee. To our surprise, we had to make the coffee ourselves - which was a super cool experience!

After breakfast and coffee, we decided to walk out to a nearby beach. And so we spend the day walking from Faro to Montenegro (not the country hehe) and further down to Praia de Faro Este and back. All up a 21km walk which took us through some cool parts of the Algarve!

So far, we like the small streets with sun covers and the random pieces of art that pop up everywhere in the city 🏙️ 🌆

We are excited for the days to come. 🥳🎊🎉

    Day 21 Lisbon to Faro

    April 24 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left Lisbon at 10 am by train. Easy taking the metro to the train station. The train was packed!!

I sat next to a lovely young lady Lauren, from London travelling with her folks who live in Chicago.

    Super hot in Faro.

The hostel is great except for a shared Bathroom and Shower?? I plan to shower super early tomorrow that is my plan. Not really liking this part ....

I don't usually book any tours however seeing dolphins really appealed to me so I am going tomorrow!!! I can't wait.

    I also booked a Cave tour/ hike for Saturday😉

Faro is very close to Lagos .... I would love to go there but there just isn't enough time. Next time,?? Hmmmmm😉

    Spaziergang zum Strand

    April 13 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Read more

    FARO

    May 6 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

  • Day 37

    And we completed the masterplan!

    April 30 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Day 3 of our adventure: Walk from Boliqueime to Albufeira successfully completed!

We started the day with a stop at our favourite cafe (Melbourne Cafe) before taking the 10.23 am train to Boliqueime.

The idea for the day was to walk from there down to the coast and over to Albufeira. According to maps this should have been a 19km walk all up...

With trains being back to normal we left pretty much on time and got to Boliqueime not too much later.

Our walk started as normal and we stopped along the way to take in the views or get some food at the supermarket.

The first real stop was at Miradouro da Praia dos Olhos de Água - a little beach with a buzzing vibe.

From there, we walked along the coastline, climbing cliffs and taking in the serenity.

Before getting into Albufeira, we hit the party hot spot of the Algarve and saw the classic streets with pubs, bars and clubs - a dream for any Dutch or English stag do/ hens party.

From there it wasn't too long until we reached Albufeira. At first it seemed like just a built up coastal town but once we got into the little streets, we discovered the vibe and diversity of this place. A mix of cute shops, lots of restaurants and a nice atmosphere.

Since the train station wasn't in the town centre but a 90 minute walk away, we decided to get back on our feet to catch the next train.

Lucky we left earlier!! Google "invented" street links that either never existed or have decades ago. We got lost so often and ended up walking more than 2 hours to get to the train station. But we got there!

Once back in Faro, we treated ourselves to dinner and went to "The Chimney" an Indian restaurant.

This 19km walk turned into 30km in the end...

    Bed was calling us🙈

    Day two of our masterplan

    April 29 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

With power back to normal, we thought: maybe trains are also running as scheduled...

    Well what can I say...

We had a chill morning, starting with a coffee at our "local" - the Melbourne Cafe 🙈 with coffee prices way too expensive (€3.80 for a flat white/ latte) but "Hey" we are on holiday 😎😜🫢👽

And then wandered down to the train station hoping for a 10.23 departure to Loule.

To our surprise, staff were back working at the ticket counter but advised that the next train might run at 12.30pm. Since we didn't want to wait that long, we decided to take the bus instead (for twice the price but at least we got to go).

We boarded the bus at 11.30am and got to Loule about 45 minutes later.

Loule is a cute little village in the hills with an old castle and a quaint market.

From there, we decided to start the "chilled walk for the day" and headed towards Quarteira - a beach town.

On our way, we stopped multiple times to get food or pick oranges from trees along the way.

Once we got to Quarteira, we stopped to take in the beach views before heading to Vilamoura.

Vilamoura seems to be a rich people retirement village for English people. Yachts as far as the eye can see and overpriced seafood restaurants as well as Irish Pubs that think they are the new Micheline Star Restaurant. But it was cool to see the other side...

From Vilamoura we took the bus back to Faro, stopped in at our local toasties place for dinner and headed home 🏠

All up, we walked another half marathon - what a chilled walk 😂😂🐢
