    5/13 To Oliveira de Azeméis

    May 13 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    The rain falls again,
    Filling puddles on the trail.
    Pilgrims slosh along.

I started out for another rainy day. I was carrying a bag of my wet laundry until I spotted a laundry mat. It's the cleanest laundry facility I've ever seen! I dried my clothes and carried on. There is a lot of road walking, as trucks and cars speed by. More amazing tile work in front of houses. This particular church offered oranges to pilgrims who stopped to collect their stamps. The landscape is continuously amazing. I'm exhausted each day, I barely get my pictures up, falling asleep as I write.
My favorite couple I've met on this route are these kind South African Dutch walkers. I always look forward to running into them.

    Camino Day 14

    May 10 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

    Águeda to Albergaria-a-Nova
    ~23 km/14.3 miles

Two weeks completed! A short time period that feels so much longer because of everything place I've been and every person I've met.

Not too many photos today. I walked with Kelly today, and we also ran into others we have met along the way. Mostly walking through small towns with fornerly grand old homes.

We also passed through the larger town of Albergaria-a-Velha which was quite nice.

I stayed in a very nice private room with shared bath at albergue. There were only four of us staying in the entire place. Katy from France and Kristina from Slovakia in the dorm. Peter from the Netherlands and me in private rooms.

We went to dinner at a restaurant called Há Leitão, which roughly translates as There is Suckling Pig, a dish that this region is known for. From the outside the restaurant looked all but abandoned, as did the other businesses on this street.

I hadn't had the suckling pig yet while in this area, and luckily there were two servings left that day. In addition to our main dishes we also had vegetable soup, salad, rice and French fries. Wine was served in a rustic clay pitcher. The owner brought us sliced fresh strawberries and a glass of port wine homemade by his friend.

The national championship football (soccer) game was on TV, and we all cheered when the owner's favored team scored. As he was serving us he always had one eye on the game.

    Águeda

    May 7 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Gradually I am really getting used to these albergues! I fell asleep early yesterday and woke up very fit at 5am today. Knowing that I have quite a distance ahead of me, I got up and started walking.

Today was again a very monotoneous hike, 75% along a busy street and the remainder also all on concrete.

And again, I was running into the masses of Fatima-pilgrims which I overtook one by one (took me at least two hours and with my break I did, I had them again in front of me 😅).

I arrived early in my albergue, again a fantastic one! It has a beautiful terrace, some chill out areas and a nice kitchen. I had a really nice afternoon and evening here!

    Road Kill

    May 2 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

At times it felt like I could be sideswiped by a bus, semi-truck, or car at any time. While it was a short day of walking, I started out at 8 am to beat predicted rain which never really developed until late. Most of the day was walking along the road - some highways, some narrow small town roads, and very little trails. Got to the ending point for the day at 11:30 am and transferred/Taxi’d back to Agueda for accommodations. I will Taxi back to the ending point from today Saturday morning and pick up from where I stopped today. The extra night in Agueda allowed me to not take my backpack and it was enlightening. I could have walked another 16 km! Thunderstorms are predicted for the next couple days so we’ll see whether I am able to avoid the rain. Looking forward to getting into Porto in a couple of days to start the journey along the coast.

Met a couple gentlemen - Jose from Spain, and and Darragh from Ireland.

    Ankunft in Porto

    April 28 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

  • Day 8

    5/11 to Agueda

    May 12 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

    Quietly, I walk
    Alone without the chatter.
    Stepping with my thoughts.

I walked across the park where a Sunday antique market was. There are so many interesting old collections of anything you can think of. Here are some beautiful views that struck me today. The tile work is phenomenal. The rooster above the church represents an old legend of the Portuguese Rooster 🐓.
I'm disappointed that all the churches are closed. Sometimes, there are little chapels unlocked, but rarely.
I was able to stamp my credential book at the São Tiago statue at the side of a village street.
I've developed blisters on my toes, and walking is painful. It's a good thing that there is such beauty around to distract me.

  • Day 8

    5/12 to Albergaria a Nova

    May 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    I ask myself,
Who am I doing this for?
    God says be quiet.

I keep walking quietly and inhale the view. There are orange, lemon, and quince trees all around. I enjoyed the walk near a river that runs through the old Roman Bridge. A small break from the road walking. Most of this walk has been on the road, and much of it has heavy traffic whipping by. I find this more exhausting than hiking mountain sides.
This albergue has been the nicest stay so far. "REINA D TERESA" Such a roomy, beautiful setup. I shared a room with Lei ( from China). And we breakfast with a couple from South Africa.

    Camino Day 13

    May 9 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

    Curia to Águeda
    ~21.5 km/13.4 miles

After a buffet breakfast with assorted pastries and bread, meat, cheeses, fruit, etc. we left the hotel and rejoined the Camino about 4 km from Curia.

The day started out sunny, but we soon saw dark clouds, and there was quite a downpour as we stood partially sheltered by tress on the side of a busy road.

Most of the day was spent walking on asphalt and dodging raindrops. We both had reservations at Residencial Celeste/Albergue de Peregrinos San António. Kelly was in the dorms, and I had a private room. Unfortunately, not as luxurious as the day before.

A lot of other people we had met previously were also staying there, and we made some new friends. A group of 8 of us enjoyed dinner together in town.

  • Day 15

    Aveiro

    May 4 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
