    Jeju - die Honeymoon Insel Südkoreas

    Eine kontrastreiche Natur, spektakuläre Landschaften und eine romantische Liebesinsel – das alles vereint Jeju, die größte Insel Südkoreas. Die Vulkaninsel begeistert mit ihrer eindrucksvollen Flora und Fauna und lockt jährlich viele frisch Vermählte an. Rund 90 Kilometer südlich der koreanischen Halbinsel liegt Jeju in der sogenannten Koreastraße im Meer.
    Der wolkenverhangene Star von Jeju ragt in der Mitte der Insel empor: Es ist der ruhende Schildvulkan Hallasan mit fast 2.000 Metern Höhe. Und genau da sollte es heute hingehen - zwar nicht auf den Gipfel aber an einen fantastischen Ausblickspunkt. Nun, entsprechend erwartungsvoll ging es bei der Wanderung steil nach oben. Schweißgebadet am Gipfel angekommen, ließ die Aussicht jedoch etwas zu wünschen übrig... Das war wohl mal ein Griff ins Klo... Schade, dass wir nur so kurz hier waren. Es gibt noch weitaus Spannenderes zu sehen.

    Beispielsweise leben auf Jeju rund 5.000 Haenyeo, die als die letzten „Meerfrauen“ – so die wörtliche Übersetzung – Südkoreas gelten: Diese Frauen tauchen ohne Pressluftflaschen und nur mit der Kraft ihrer Lungen, um Meeresfrüchte vom Meeresboden zu ernten.

    Aber irre ist natürlich, dass hier in Südkorea Hunde wie Meerschweinchen gehalten werden...
    Da die Geburtenrate hier bei 0,6 liegt und Kinder extrem teuer sind, werden sich stattdessen Hunde angeschafft.    Read more

    Küstenfahrt mit Markt

    Ausflug Helga und Gerd:
    Wir haben Japan erstmal verlassen und die Insel Jeju in Südkorea erreicht. Die Insel ist relativ klein, nicht erdbebengefährdet. Wir sehen das Gebirge, deren Gipfel zum Teil schneebedeckt sind. Zum Schutz gegen den Wind sind an den Feldern kleine Mäuerchen errichtet.
    1. Attraktion: Der Nusseiben-Wald
    2.Attraktion: Der Drachenfelsen. Mit viel Fantasie erkennt man einen drachenähnlichen Felsen im Wasser. Interessanter fanden wir den kleinen Canyon im Meer.
    Abschluss bildet wieder ein Markt, mehr eine Markthalle. Viele bunte , sehr saubere Läden.    Read more

    Day 2–4

    Jeju Island

    Fra Shanghai fløy jeg til øya Jeju, som ligger omtrent 100 kilometer sør for Koreahalvøya. Med sitt milde klima, vakre natur og flotte strender er Jeju et populært reisemål for både sørkoreanere og turister fra resten av Øst-Asia. Flyruten mellom Seoul, Sør-Koreas hovedstad, og Jeju har lenge vært en av verdens travleste, med avganger hvert kvarter. Til tross for den omfattende turismen, var atmosfæren på øya rolig, og Jeju ser ut til å ha bevart mye av sin opprinnelige sjarm.

    Jeg ankom Jeju om morgenen og tok bussen til østsiden av øya for å se det ikoniske landemerket Seongsan Ilchulbong, også kjent som "Soloppgangsfjellet", som er oppført på listen over verdens sju naturlige underverk. Vulkanen har en skålformet kraterkant med en bredde på rundt 600 meter og en høyde på 182 meter. De bratte, taggete klippene som omkranser krateret gir fjellet et dramatisk og nærmest festningslignende utseende.

    Neste dag besteg jeg Hallasan, en vulkan på 1947 moh og Sør-Koreas høyeste fjell. Jeg valgte én rute opp og en annen ned for å oppleve mer av landskapet. Da jeg kom ned fra fjellet fant jeg en restaurant og bestilte det jeg trodde var en forfriskende kald appelsinjuice. Det viste seg imidlertid at juicen var blandet med den koreanske risvinen soju. Den entusiastiske damen i restauranten insisterte på å vise meg hvordan jeg skulle drikke denne "heksedrikken" fra en skål og spurte gjentatte ganger om jeg likte den. For å være høflig forsikret jeg henne om at jeg gjorde det, og under hennes våkne blikk ble jeg nødt til å drikke opp. Senere fant jeg ut at alkoholinnholdet i juicen tilsvarte en hel flaske vin. Sørkoreanerne er kjent for å ha det høyeste alkoholforbruket i Asia, og globalt sett overgås de kun av enkelte land i Øst-Europa.

    Tilbake på hostellet kom jeg i prat med noen av de andre gjestene, og vi bestemte oss for å dra ut og spise koreansk BBQ. På slike restauranter griller man kjøttet selv på en grill midt på bordet, med en avtrekksvifte over. Når kjøttet er ferdiggrillet, pakkes det inn i salatblader sammen med ferske urter, kimchi og ulike sauser – litt som en taco.

    Når jeg reiser alene, velger jeg som regel å bo på hostell, helst i sovesal sammen med andre. Det er ikke først og fremst for å spare penger, men fordi det gir en god mulighet til å møte nye mennesker. Etter middagen kjøpte vi inn soju og samlet oss på hostellet for en improvisert fest, hvor alle gjestene ble med. Det ble en livlig og minneverdig siste kveld på Jeju!    Read more

    Jeju Island - Part I

    This volcanic island is also called the Hawaii of South Korea and has become a popular holiday destination because of the white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, lush and green vegetation, high volcanic cliffs, hiking trails and a pleasant subtropical climate. No wonder it is one of the 7 new natural wonders of the world. And no wonder that the busiest route in the world is by far Seoul-Jeju, with 85.000 flights per year and something like a 10 minute interval of planes leaving each day.

    Highlights: walking through lava caves and climbing Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak volcano) at 5am with fantastic views. Chilling at hipster beach Woljeong, not yet discovered by the mass, but also at hangloose, surfs-up Jungmun Saekdal Beach. And passing by beautiful fields of green tea.    Read more

    Jeju Island

    Next stop was a quick 55 minute flight with Tway Air to Jeju Island off the south coast, where we had a long awaited reunion with Amy and Chris. We stayed in a lovely Airbnb apartment and to top it off we had lovely sunshine for the weekend. For the first afternoon we went to the Samseonghyeal Shrine (W2,500/€1.90), where we learnt about the history of the island and the legend of the three demigods emerging from a hole in the ground becoming the founding fathers of the island and its people. We then went to Folklore and Natural History Museum (W2,000/€1.50) where we saw exhibitions from the various ages of the island.

    That evening we treated ourselves to another Korean BBQ. As in most restaurants in South Korea, they only have chopsticks on the table. I have been finding them quite difficult to use but have been trying them all the same. Here, the waiter’s mother saw my struggle and came over to showed me how to use them. She then proceeded to make the meat parcels as I clearly was doing it wrong. She obviously thought I was a lost cause!

    Next morning we decided it was time to explore the island. We had read that the public transport on the island was unreliable and infrequent so we hired a car for the two days. All the car hire companies in Jeju City were based at the airport so we hopped into a taxi for the 10 minute journey. When we arrived the first two companies said they had nothing available and were unable to check if there was anything available for the next day. At the far end of the counter, the lady at ‘Rent a Car’ was jumping and waving at us to come over to her. She said that she had a car available and in what must have been one of the quickest transactions, we had ourselves a car.

    First stop was Bijarim Forest (W3,000/€2.30) which has over 2,800 nutmeg trees, including the New Millennium Nutmeg tree which is the oldest tree in Jeju. We walked the lovely trails through the forest and got a break from the hot sun. To finish off the day, I drove to Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (W5,000/€3.80) where we climbed to the top and got amazing views of the crater and eastern coast of the island.

    Next morning we got up and went to the south of the island where we climbed Sanbangsan Mountain to the beautiful Sanbanggulsa Cave Temple with amazing views across the sea. The temple had a large gold Buddha which was surrounded with over 500 different stone Buddhas. We then walked down to the coast and visited the free exhibition on the Hamel Memorial ship. This replica ship remember one of the survivors Hendrick Hamel, of a Dutch shipwreck in 1653 and had to stay in Korea for 13 years before escaping to Japan.

    Next I drove to the beautiful Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls (W2,500/€1.90) which consisted of three different falls of various size and scale. We then walked over the steep Seonimgyo bridge, high above the valley of the waterfalls. Final stop in Jeju was Jungmum Saekdal beach where we got to dip our feet in the warm Pacific Ocean.

    That evening we decided we wanted to have some Western style food so Chris found a pizza restaurant called UPS. This restaurant was in the basement and when we walked in it had the music playing really loud and the heat on full blast! After asking for the air con to be turned on and ordering our pizza, we enjoyed a lovely feast to finish our time on the island!    Read more

    Jeju eiland

    Maandag de koffers weer ingepakt en vol goede moed met de metro naar het vliegveld gegaan. Dit ging wonderbaarlijk goed met koffers & Nash. (Heel de reis hebben we al minisnoepjes & rozijnen bij ons tbv chantage)

    Klein uurtje vliegen van Busan naar Jeju eiland. Er waren 3 klassen van jongensschool en opa/oma tourreis welke ook het vliegtuig namen. Bij het boarden waren alle opa's en oma's wild en de jongens gingen vooraan op de grond zitten :/ (Check foto)

    Het grote verschil tussen Japanners & Koreanen is toch wel dat Japanners rustig, geduldig en beleefd zijn en de Koreanen niet. Die hebben nog minder geduld dan Nash en mijn moeder (sorry ma). Ze dringen dus bijna altijd voor.
    Het grote voordeel was wel dat een lange rij bij het toilet in no time opgelost was, alles moet snel.

    Na de vlucht met taxi naar hotel gegaan, rondje buurt gelopen. Straat waar ons hotel staat is het leukst met koffietentje & 2 eettentjes, voor de rest was het weinig.
    Vroeg gaan slapen.

    Vanmorgen om 10.00 stond taxi voor de deur.
    We hebben voor 150.000 Won (€125,-) een taxi met chauf geregeld die ons rondrijdt over het eiland.
    Als eerste naar een strandje, daar heeft Nash 'visjes gevangen' , daarna Hallim Park geweest. Mooi park met bonzai bomen en grotten. Zijn we redelijk snel doorheen gewandeld, want we hadden een hele planning!

    Onze taxichauf wist wel een goed plekje om te eten bij een lokaal tentje. Schoenen/slippers uit, op de vloer zitten in kleermakerszit (echt iets voor Paul) en vispan eten.
    Ik eet het liefst vis, waarvan ik niet zie dat het een vis, dus zonder kop, staart en graten. Nou hier zat alles erop & eraan + ook nog levende slakken/schelpdieren op tafel (ja ze bewogen!) Die mochten we zelf in de pan doen en koken maar 😮
    Nash en ik hebben van alles wat geproefd, slakkendingen heb ik overgeslagen. Daarna ging Nash het halve interieur slepen en slopen, dus goed excuus om het pand te verlaten en Nash zijn favo hobby te beoefenen: steentjes gooien.
    Paul heeft natuurlijk samen met de chauf alles netjes opgegeten.

    Onderzeeboot, hier hadden we op een blog gelezen dat het wel cool was. Met een boot vaarden we naar de onderzeeboot toe, overstappen en naar beneden (natuurlijk eerst alle Koreanen, wanten die moeten voor en hebben haast)
    We zaten uiteindelijk op 33 meter diepte, daar merkte we eigenlijk niet veel van, ik had verwacht dat aan je oren te voelen, maar dat was niet het geval.
    Geen vis te zien! Totdat de duikers langs de boot vissenvoer strooiden (hadden ze goed bedacht) kwamen er toch wat vissen. Nash vond het in ieder geval heel leuk om te zien en wij vonden het toch ook wel cool om een keer in een onderzeeboot te hebben gezeten.

    Oké volgende bezichtiging! Een rif gevormd door lava van een vulkaan, mooi maar niet spannend. Erna naar Cheonjiyeon Waterfall + een aparte brug. Waterval was mooi, maar ook niet spectaculair.
    We hadden nu de westkant vh eiland bezocht en volgens de taxichauf waren alle echt mooie stukken aan de oostkant vh eiland. Taxichauf probeerde ook een goede verkoper te zijn en wilde nog een dagje met ons op pad. 1 dag was gezellig genoeg ;)

    Terug bij hotel bleek 1 eettentje dicht te zijn dus zijn we bij de andere gaan eten. Heel leuk bbq concept aan tafel. Je kon kiezen uit 5 soorten vlees en wat bijgerechten. Heerlijk gegeten en daarna bij het koffietentje bakkie gedaan en homemade cookies genomen. Heerlijk einde vd dag.

    Morgen zijn we ook heel de dag in Jeju en maken we er een dagje strand van. Volgens mij een strandje aan de oostkant van het eiland ;)    Read more

    Jeju wird als kleines Hawaii bezeichnet, weil sowohl die Entstehungsgeschichte der Insel als auch das Klima ähnlich ist. Der Riesenvorteil für uns war, dass wir nach Hawaii mehr als 10 Stunden fliegen müssten, in Jeju waren wir in einer Stunde von Tianjin aus. Am ersten Tag erkundeten wir die namensgebende Hauptstadt der Insel. Markt, zentraler Tempel und Strand standen auf dem Programm.Read more
