    Barcelona & Monserrat

    31 de mayo de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day of Churches today. We drove to Monserrat (serated mountains) where a Benedictine monk decided about 1300 years ago to set up a church and commune way up in the mountains. Not sure how they did it, but the scenery is spectacular! They also have a black Madonna that is famous.
In the afternoon we went to Gaudi's church. Started about 250 years ago, and they reckon it should be finished by 2036. When we visited Barcelona a few years ago, we didn't go inside (queues were too long), which I had regretted. This time we went in, and it is so different to other churches. I loved it.
We wanted to check out La Rambla again, so the bus driver took us there and we walked back to the hotel. Good to see it again. A long walk back, with Google Maps guiding us.

A 1000 Year Old Pilgrimage Site

    10 de enero de 2024, España ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

    Montserrat Monastery in the Mountains

    Hostel Guilleumes, Monistrol
Not our favourite place but it was okay for one night.

We have enjoyed our time in Barcelona. Five nights was perfect but we only saw a small bit of what this lovely city has to offer. Overall, we found it to be an artistic city with unique architecture. It has easy access to both mountains and the sea. The streets are easy to walk on, the public transportation is great and the food is delicious. Our Hotel Ronda was clean and comfortable and in a perfect location. It met all of our needs.

And so now, we are moving on to Montserrat, the “serrated mountain” that is northwest of Barcelona. It has been a pilgrimage site for a thousand years. Hymns explain how the mountain was carved by little angels with golden saws. Nice image…

We will take the metro (with our pass) to the closeby Placa Espanya train station. The Line R5 train leaves every hour starting at around 8:30 a.m. to Monistrol where our hostel is located at the base of the mountain. Then we will take a rack train to the monastery. A rack train is used to go up steep inclines without slipping down.

The monastery is located 2,400’ up. There are 30 Benedictine monks who carry on its spiritual traditions of prayer and work and 50 boys, and recently a few girls, who sing in one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe - Escolania de Monserrat. Documents testify to the existence of a religious and music school in Montserrat as far back as the 14th century.

We saw that there was going to be 100% chance of rain and 4C! Not the greatest day to go up into the mountains but we are only here once so “que sera sera”. Actually the scenery with the rain clouds/mist reminded us of our visit to Machu Picchu in Peru several years ago. It was rainy then too. Mystical.

When we arrived in Monistrol, we hunted for our hostel in the rain, left our bags and hurried to catch the rack train up to the monastery. The boys choir was singing at 1 pm for 10 minutes and we wanted to hear them. Unfortunately, we didn’t get there on time and they had just finished when we got to the basilica. But luckily, we can watch them perform on Utube!

We purchased seniors tickets (you always have to ask) to tour the Basilica and to see the Black Madonna. The basilica was beautiful with walls completely covered from floor to ceiling with beautiful art - mosaics, sculptures, frescoes, stained glass, paintings, etc. so much time and money put into making it beautiful!

The Black Madonna statue is very special to the Catalan people. This wooden statue is known by many names including; La Moreneta, St. Mary of Montserrat, the Black Virgin and most commonly The Virgin of Montserrat. The monastery was built around its accessibility to the Black Madonna, which is located within the basilica. Apparently, it was carved in the 1200s. Pope Leo XIII declared the Black Madonna to be the patron saint of Catalonia.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the fact that she is black.

Many believe that the statue has healing powers and thousands of miraculous cures are credited to this sacred piece of wood. Most of the statue sits behind a protective sheet of glass, except for one hand. In this hand the statue holds a sphere, which represents the universe. This is the only part of the statue not protected behind glass and it is said that pilgrims simply need to touch this exposed area to be healed.

It continued to rain in the afternoon and the cold mountain air made it feel pretty chilly. Our layers worked though and our clothes dried quickly once we returned to the hostel.

We ate dinner at a local bar, La Roca - huge portions of tasty food and very inexpensive. We had some interesting conversations with the locals who were eating there. They were tickled that we were from Canada and that we could and wanted to speak to them. It was fun. The Catalan language is spoken here but they can speak Castilian Spanish too so we understood them.

Oh, as many of you know, Mongolia has been on my bucket list for a long time. Mine, not so much Chris’. Today we met a lady from Mongolia! She felt that this was an omen for me. Lol. I certainly hope so!

    Montserrat

    6 de julio de 2023, España ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Montserrat is truly a magical place 😊. Located on a very steep mountain that gives its name to the entire region, it houses an imposing abbey on its top. We arrived a bit later than expected and couldn't visit the cave or the monastery, but we got to do the Funicular, which goes from the base of the mountain to a few meters below the abbey.

The scenery is breathtaking. It can hardly be compared with other places. Napoleon was extremely moved as he took in the place as we went up the mountain. But the best was yet to come as we got to squeeze a visit to the abbey last minute before they closed.

    Barcelona - part 3

    2 de junio de 2023, España ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

On Friday, we had to say goodbye to Jacque 😔. It was great spending time with her. We then took a train to tour the Montserrat Monastery in the mountains outside of Barcelona and do some hiking, Our hiking turned into more of an adventure than planned: we went to the top of the mountain with the intent of hiking to a sacred cave. However, after 2 hours of hiking down the mountain over mostly very rough terrain, we arrived near some other caves -- and almost 4 miles from where we needed to catch the train back. We tried to get a taxi (even enlisted help of a woman working at a bar) with no success so we hoofed it back. This included over 3 miles on a windy mountain road with no berm. We made the last train with 30 minutes to spare.

On Saturday, we saw a neighborhood festival where each street/neighborhood had their own marching group with instruments. Not sure I would call them bands.

We also spent time at the Banksy Museum, Barcelona beach and surrounding area. This included a back-home style brewery (Black Lab) founded by a couple from Chicago.

    Montserrat/Palace of Catalan Music

    24 de marzo, España ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Yesterday we visited Montserrat, which is a monastery tucked away in the Catalan coastal range. These mountains are beautiful, looking more like giant hoodoos from Utah’s Bryce Canyon NP and Goblin Valley State Parks. Montserrat literally means serrated mountains, which is how they come across, minus the jaggedness of other newer peaks who have yet to be subjected to millennia of erosion.

To get there we took a cable car that quite quickly zips you up to the monastery. It’s a little harrowing for someone who is not too fond of heights, but sometimes you just have to trust in technology. The area is really gorgeous, minus all of the touristy shops at the top. I normally do not care about touristy stuff but am always scornful to see such things in nature.

The monastery is perched a top these peaks, undoubtedly seeking solitude, isolation and peace, but we always find them don’t we:). There is actually a 27 km hike you can do in the area, which if we had more time would.

We finished our day taking in a symphony at the Palace of Catalan Music. The theater is sensationally beautiful with its purplish roof and sculptures abound. You take in this music hall the way you would a piece of art, couple that with the symphony and it’s like a massage for your mind.

Barcelona has been wonderful. I wish we had more time. Much like Mendoza, it feels like it could be home. I cannot believe how quickly our time here has passed and am hesitant to move on, but Malta here we come.

What an eventful and fantastic day full of spectacular views and great people and some public transport issues…..or jet lag decision paralysis.
When we did get to the tour spot, after “speedy Gonzales” taxi driver, we had a lovely day .
We met some great English people and they recommended a dinner spot and we later caught up with them and their family.
