    Dar is hot, getting here was stressful. Overall I am not impressed and have the need to leave quickly. At the Ethiopian embassy I get my visa within one day! Let's hope that the border crossings will let me through :-\
    Update: Sudan closed all borders and the Sudanese embassy in Dar will not issue a visa for me at this moment :-(

    One night I stay 20 km north in a small beach camp. Calm and friendly it is but the beach is totally rubbished with sea weed mixed with plastic. Getting there and back into the centre takes 1-3 hours depending on the traffic. The second night I try to find a cheap room in the centre but the few hostels I call "are closed because of the virus". I find a small workshop to change my engine oil, oil filter and the totally clogged air filter. The guys are very nice and with Mosses I go for dinner later. The location is used to be crowded in the evenings but yeah, "the virus" starts to show his effect here as well. Mosses also shows me an affordable, simple accommodation close to the workshop and to the embassy. Hell yeah, I really enjoy how everything works out in the end even though 5 minutes earlier it seemed to be a disaster. Again one more evidence to always stay relaxed and calm :-*    Leer más

    Grenzen testen

    Nachdem ich am Strand eingeschlafen war, möchte ich etwas essen. An dem Strand gibt es die Möglichkeit etwas zu bestellen, größtenteils fangfrischen Fisch mit Pommes. In der Zeit in der ich warten soll, erinner ich mich an den "Shark Lagoon"-Trail welcher zu einem Strand führt, an dem wohl an guten Tagen auch kleine Haie zu sehen sind! 🦈
    Ich mache mich allein auf den Weg - doch schon bald merke ich dass das keine gute Idee ist.. der Weg führt mich in den bewaldeten Teil der Insel, ich würde es aber eher Dschungel nennen. Auf einmal ist es sehr schwül, man hört das Rauschen des Meeres nicht mehr nur noch Tiere, vor allem Insekten und auch Moskitos.. das Insektrnspray habe ich länger nicht aufgetragen, was für mich bedeutet, etwas schneller dadurch damit die Viecher nicht landen können. Problematisch daran ist, dass der Weg nun mal sehr steinig und verwurzelt ist und ich nur Flip-Flops trage 😅 ich schwitze am Ganzen Körper und die Moskitos jagen mich durch diesen Urwald 😆 nach einer Weile gibt es eine Abzweigung und weil es danach nicht weiter ausgeschildert ist, entscheide ich umzukehren. Ich hätte sehr gerne kleine Haie gesehen und es fühlt sich leicht nach Augeben an. Aber auf der anderen Seite habe ich Hunger und das soll auch kein Survival-Event werden :)    Leer más

    Coco Beach

    Mein nächster Halt führt mich zu Coco Beach. Hier wäre es eigentlich an der Zeit meine erste Kokosnuss zu trinken, aber ich fühle es noch nicht. Mit etwas Zeit für mich, die hier dennoch kostbar und wenig ist, esse ich meine Ananas-Stücke vom Markt und genieße den Ausblick aufs Meer. Zwischendurch gebe ich das ein oder andere Stückchen an Fragende ab - ist sowieso zu viel für mich allein :)
    Auf einmal fängt es an zu regnen (ja ihr lest richtig 😄)
    Zeit zurück ins Hostel zurückzukommen, vielleicht komme ich noch später hierhin zurück, da ich hier vor hatte auch noch Feiern zu gehen. Dafür gibt es hier jedoch einige Locations 😁    Leer más

    Soko Kuu La Kisutu

    Zwei witzige Locals führen mich herum. Wir beduchen einen lokalen Markt, der nicht im Geringsten überflutet ist. Eigentlich wollte ich zu einem größeren, welcher aber wesentlich voller und wilder gewesen wäre. Doch der hier beeindruckt mich auch schon. Nebenbei ein paar Eindrücke als Fotos :)
    Ich schlage zu und kaufe mir reines Kokosöl und Ananas-Stücke zum Mitnehmen und fär meine beiden Guides.
    Ich müsste auch definitiv öfter auf Märkte gehen in Deutschland - zwar eine komplette Reizüberflutung, aber es macht Spaß zu handeln und saisonale und regionale Früchte finde ich sowieso immer top 😃    Leer más

    Die zwei Künstler

    Zwei Künstler, die mir etwas von ihrem Leben erzählten, mir am Ende natürlich noch Kunst anboten, welche ich wirklich schön fand.
    Ich habe hier auch am Strand des Da Res Salaam Hafen das erste mal Ugali mit den bloßen Händen gegessen.
    Es fühlt sich verbunden an - dem Essen wird meiner Meinung dadurch mehr Wertschätzung entgegnet. Dennoch: auf Dauer kann ich mir das nicht vorstellen. Die Hände Wasche ich mir zwar vor und nachher, jedoch ohne Seife 🧼    Leer más

    Museum-Time

    Ab mit dem Boda (Motorrad) ins City Centre. Die Fahrt mit diesen Mottorad ist genau das was ich suche - ein starker Hauch von Risiko, Verrücktheit und Grenzenlosigkeit 🏍
    Zeit sich ein wenig zu bilden und sich du Kuultur hier näher anzuschauen denke ich - ich lese einiges über die ersten Menschen die hier ihren Ursprung fanden und noch viel mehr über die Historie Tanzania, die durchaus auch deutsch geprägt ist, jedoch auch portugisisch und britisch.

    Hier hatte ich auch meinen ersten Kontakt zu den Kindern Afrikas. Es fand ein großer Schulausflug zu diesem Museum statt und die Kinder beobachteten mich teilweise, anderseits winkte mich eine ganze Schar zu sich rüber und wir tauschten uns gemeinsam über ihre Sprache und auch Museumsgegestände, wie Kanus oder Fischarten aus. Die Kinder hier sind fröhlich und unheimlich neugierig. Nicht zu vergleichen mit den meisten deutschen Kindern. Ich erkenne den Unterschied versuche das ganze allerdings nicht zu stark zu werten - ich bin gespannt auf weitere Begegnungen mit Ihnen. Gerne hätte ich noch ein Selfie mit den neugierigen Kids gemacht als das Museumspersonal die Kinder darum bat, fern von mir zu bleiben (warum auch immer 🤷🏽‍♂️)
    Auch wenn ein größerer Teil der Ausstellung fehlte - mit den Kindern zu sprechen war "Ausstellung" genug 😊    Leer más

    Schön ist, wenn es schmutzig war

    4432 Kilometer abgefahren.

    Kein einziges Mal bagatellmäßig zum Abdrücken irgendwelcher Pfennige von der Polizei angehalten worden, trotz merklich erhöhter Kontrollendichte. Ein absolutes Novum ist das und eine sehr positive Entwicklung!

    74 teilweise sehr umfangreiche Änderungssätze bei OpenStreetMap eingespielt, mit Änderungen an 368 "ways" und 3413 "nodes". Ich könnte eigentlich die ganze Zeit bloß rumfahren und das Gemappte nacharbeiten 😋.

    Tansanischer Sisal macht tolle Fasern.

    Tansanisches Avocado-Öl ist sehr nussig.

    Auch zyklenfeste, "versiegelte" Bleibatterien ejakulieren Säure, die herumliegenden Kleidungsstücken erweiterte Lüftungsöffnungen und neue Durchgriffe verpasst, höhöhö.

    Mit bleifreiem Tankstellenbenzin kocht man mit dem Coleman-2-Flammen-Kocher ganz hervorragend, unstinkend und erstaunlich sauber!

    Es ist immer gut, einen Satz Ersatzkennzeichen mitzuführen, die von hinten idealerweise auch noch mit Kontaktinformationen beschriftet sind 🤓.

    Dar es Salaam

    The next morning involved a reasonably low-stress ride to Morogoro and the main bus station where a large number of buses awaited to whisk passengers, and bikes, off to Dar es Salaam. A little haggling reduced the cost of the bike. Not as substantially as Mingi achieved some hours later when his marathon ride from the outskirts of Mikumi National Park saw him cover the 81 km from Doma to Morogoro by early afternoon. By that time I'd arrived in Dar after a 20 km ride from the main bus station. Turns out most buses go considerably further towards Dar, to their depots. Due to an accident, it took until 8.30 pm before Mingi arrived. A 6-hour trip, that I did in just under 3. Phew ! I'd spent that day and the following exploring Dar. It wasn't that thrilling but was the first time since I landed that I'd seen the sea. Getting around is cheap, local food is $3 - 4 , and coke and other soda 60 cents. Accommodation is a little more pricey due to being a large city. But still not more than $25, and around $15 for a dorm bed. 2 days later Madeg arrived. I'd met him in Livingstone and stayed in touch. Still recovering from tick flue, after a bite, he'd been largely using trains and buses to stay mobile. This stop was a stepping stone to the island of Zanzibar where we'd spend the next week combing the beachside.Leer más

    Arrival at Dar Es Salam

    Our last day on the truck! We started the day again very early to hit the road for one more day. Lunch we had quickly at a buffet restaurant, in order to be back on the road as soon as possible. The closer we got to Dar Es Salam, the higher got the density of the traffic. When we saw on Google Maps, that the way to go was just an hour left, we opened a Cider to celebrate the arrival. Over 4000km and roughly 80 hours we've spent on the truck, passing 3 land borders and had a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. All of that made the experience, the African Experience, complete. TIA - This is Africa! With a short flashback about our highlights - the Rhino Walk in Zimbabwe, the leopard enjoying his breakfast in Zambia, the Kids in Malawi and even the breakdown of the truck, and last but not least the Safari in Mikumi NP / Tanzania - we drove the last kilometres to the camp, directly at the beach of Dar Es Salam.
    We celebrated the trip with a last dinner together. Afterwards, the luggage needed to be done and it was already time for the last night in our tents.    Leer más

    The Hike to the top.

    The long awaited adventure has started. 5 days up 2 days down living with this fabulous group 24/7. We will walk, talk, sing, dance without stopping and have the best laughs. Here we go!!!!
    Day 1: Machame Gate to Camp. - 11km Gain 1340m Max. 2980m
    Day 2: Machame C to Shira Camp. -5km Gain 860 Max 3840m
    Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp. -11km
    Gain 780m+ 720m- max 3900m
    Day 4: Barranco/wall Camp to Karanga Camp. -5.6Km
    Gain 300+, -140m +110m Max 4050
    Day 5: Karanga Camp to Kosovo Camp. -3.5km. Gain 850m Max 4900m 16,075ft
    Day 6: Kosovo Camp to Summit. -5km 8 hours hike Gain 995m Max elevation 5895m.
    Hike down to millennium Camp.
    12km descent 7hours hike
    Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate. -9.3km Gain-1393m

    Walked through five climate zones of Kilimanjaro,and had to scale the scary Barranco Wall, Marvelled at the alien-looking Dendrosenecio kilimanjari – truly unique plants that are not found anywhere else in the world.
    Started our final climb to the summit at Midnight. Strings of headlamps showed the way on the grueling hike in the dark. We were treated to a spectacular sunrise which warmed our hearts and bodies. We continued “pole pole” to Stella point at the top of the switch back. Once we had a short rest we pushed onto the Summit past glaciers, craters and an impressive ice field. Our family reached the summit “with more fire” than we realized we possessed as a result of the guides serenading us to the very end. Hakuna Matata!    Leer más
