    Day 23 - British F1 GP - Race day

    After all the planning and effort, today was race day at the British Formula 1 Grand Prix. We had a late start, as there was no need to get to the track too early because the race didn't start until 3:00 pm. We arrived at the track around noon and stood in a long queue for half an hour to get in. By 2:00 pm, we were in the grandstand, ready for the race.

    My favourite driver, Oscar Piastri, got off to a great start and held his starting position of third easily. His teammate, Lando Norris, moved from second on the grid to the lead, followed by pole sitter Max Verstappen. Max soon regained the lead, and the drivers settled into their positions with little or no passing.

    Just over halfway through the race, Kevin Magnussen’s HAAS blew a motor to cause the safety car to come out. For those drivers who were yet to pit for new tyres, it was the perfect opportunity to do so. Lewis Hamilton was one of those drivers and took third place from Oscar Piastri. The two McLaren drivers in second and fourth were now each being chased by a Mercedes driver on a softer tyre compound. Most fans would have expected both McLarens to be overtaken, but to their credit, they held off the charge and retained their respective positions.

    The final results were:
    1st Place - Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
    2nd Place - Lando Norris - McLaren
    3rd Place - Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes

    Oscar Piastri finished fourth, his best result so far. l enjoyed the race from my seat in the grandstand and would love to come to this race again.    Read more

    Day 22

    Day 22 - British F1 GP - Qualifying

    We had a great day at the British Formula 1 Grand Prix today. We started our day with a tour of the Silverstone Museum. We spent a good two hours looking at the history of the race track, along with the famous cars and drivers from the past century. We also had time to go to the museum cafe for a coffee, and we bought some sandwiches for lunch. The sandwiches were much better than the options around the Grand Prix site.

    The weather looked a little threatening today, so I suggested we go to one of the under cover grandstands. We found some seats at the top of the stairs, which gave us plenty of legroom. Rob appreciated this, as he felt a little cramped in the seats yesterday. Once we found these seats, we pitched our tent for the day there.

    No one was going to stop Max Vestappan from getting pole position today, he was just too good when it mattered. However, my favourite driver, Australia's Oscar Piastri, qualified in third position, his best qualifying result in his rookie year. Oscar's teammate, Lando Norris, was second, an excellent outcome for the McLaren team. I was also excited to see Alex Albon from my favourite team, Williams Racing, finish qualifying in eighth place. The perennial backmarkers appear to be on the improve.

    In the FIA Formula 2 race, we saw Australian, Jack Doohan, fight for a third place podium finish in a wet race. A great effort given the atrocious conditions, where he had to pull off some inspirational moves to get past other competitors.

    Overall, it was a great day at the Grand Prix, and I was excited to see my favourite driver and favourite team do well. Tomorrow is race day.    Read more

    Day 21

    Day 21 - British Formula 1 Grand Prix

    Today was free practice day for the Formula 1 teams at the British Formula 1 Grand Prix. Free practice are sessions that take place to allow the drivers to test their cars and get familiar with the track before qualifying and the race. Today there were two free practice sessions, each lasting for one hour, and drivers were allowed to use any of the designated tyre types.

    No surprise to see Max Verstappen and the Red Bull Racing team end the day as the fastest cars. The only Australian driver in the race, Oscar Piastri, finished the day as the ninth fastest driver despite a hydraulic leak in his McLaren. The two Williams Racing cars also did better than expected, finishing third and fifth after the second practice session. It would be good to see these drivers do as well, if not better during qualifying and the race.

    Supporting the Formula 1 practice were the Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars. They each had a practice session and qualifying today and will be racing tomorrow. The Formula 1 cars get one more practice session tomorrow before qualifying for the race late in the afternoon.    Read more

    Canons Ashby

    Vorhin dachte ich noch, dass ich wahrscheinlich wieder nur Bilder von meinem Essen hochladen werde, aber weil ich dann doch so viele schöne andere gemacht habe, bekommt ihr jetzt gar nicht zu sehen, was ich heute alles so tolles gegessen habe (das war nämlich leider ein bisschen viel - jeden Falls hab ich jede mögliche Mahlzeit mitgenommen).
    Angefangen hab ich den Tag relativ spät mit einer großzügigen Schale Müsli angefangen. Dann hab ich mich für meinen Ausflug fertig gemacht, aber Mike wollte noch eben an Toto etwas gucken, weshalb sich meine Abfahrt dezent nach hinten verschoben hat. Das war aber nicht weiter schlimm. Trotz der knappen Stunde, die ich dahin gebraucht habe war ich gut vor Mittag da. Angekommen in Canons Ashby hab ich mich für zwei freie Touren angemeldet und die Zeit bis dahin in dem Second Hand Bookshop verbracht. Die erste Tour war dann eine grobe Einleitung zu dem Haus. Das Haus stammt aus den Tudor Zeiten und wurde erbaut mit den Steinen von dem Kloster, was mal an der Kirche war, aber dann abgerissen wurde, als Henry das Kloster geschlossen hat. Seit 1550 (oder so) haben da einige Menschen gewohnt und einige auch etwas verändert. Einer der Veränderer war mir sehr sympatisch, weil er unnötige Türen und Fenster eingebaut hat, nur damit es von Außen symmetrisch aussieht. Außerdem hat der ganze Böden und Decken angehoben oder abgesenkt um die Proportionen vernünftig zu machen. Das finde ich sehr bewundernswert!
    Nach der ersten Tour durchs Haus hab ich direkt danach eine durch den Garten mitgemacht, wo ein paar Mal die gleichen Sachen erzählt wurden, aber auch das wieder auf sehr interessante Weise. Ich mag es bei solchen Touren mitzumachen, auch wenn meine Füße in den schwarzen Schuhen bei der strahlenden Sonne ziemlich gebrannt haben.
    Als dann auch die zweite Tour zu Ende war hab ich mich in den Teegarten gesetzt und da eine Suppe und einen Cheesescone gegessen während ich gelesen habe. Danach hab ich mir noch einmal ohne eine Tour das Haus angeguckt. Die Räume waren echt beeindruckend und echt schön wieder hergestellt oder überhaupt eingerichtet. Nach dem Haus hab ich dann auch noch mal den Garten und dann die Kirche erkundet. In einem schattigen Plätzchen im Garten hab ich dann mein Buch zu Ende gelesen und in dem Buchladen dann direkt für Nachschub gesorgt. Das Buch hab ich dann bei einem Stück Kuchen und einem Kännchen Tee direkt auch angefangen, bevor ich dann mit einer Kugel Eis wieder zurück zu Toto spaziert bin und mich auf den Heimweg gemacht habe.
    Seit dem ich wieder hier bin hab ich nicht mehr viel gemacht. Gleich gibt es wieder etwas zu essen. Ich bin angenehm müde. Ich hatte viel frische, aber halt auch warme Luft - ich behaupte mal, dass das jeden müde machen würde. Es ist aber wirklich ein glückliches müde. Ich bin durchaus zufrieden mit meinem Tag.

    Die Bilder passen jetzt von der Chronologie nicht mehr wirklich, aber ich bin so stolz auf das erste Bild, dass ich es eben als genau das haben musste: als erstes Bild.
    Angefangen hat mein Tag mit einem ruhigen Morgen, wo ich mich in Ruhe für die Kirche fertig machen konnte. Der Chor hat wieder gesungen, also bin ich pünktlich um 9:30 Uhr los gelaufen. Auf dem Weg hab ich dann schon mit drei Menschen, die ich jetzt kenne, etwas gequatscht, was dann in der Kirche und nach dem Gottesdienst dann nur noch mehr geworden ist. Ich liebe es, dass ich so viele Menschen kennen darf!
    Der Gottesdienst war sehr schön. Der Chor war gut, die Predigt interessant und danach der Tee lecker und die Unterhaltungen schön.
    Nach dem tollen Morgen bin in nach Hause gegangen und hab mir Mittagessen gemacht - die Familie hat sich mit Freunden getroffen, wo ich nicht mit hin konnte, weil ich eben im Chor gesungen habe. Bei ein bisschen Wintersport hab ich dann gegessen, bevor ich mich auf den Weg nach Stowe gemacht habe. Der Park gehört zum National Trust, aber für das Haus musste ich ganze 4,95 Pfund bezahlen... Das hat mir natürlich nichts ausgemacht. Ich hab sehr glücklich an einer Führung teilgenommen und über die riesigen Räume gestaunt. Zu Stowe gehört eine Privatschule, die 1923 gegründet wurde. Eben diese Privatschule hat quasi Internatszimmer auf dem zweiten Stock des gigantischen Hauses und die Schüler dürfen die alte, authentische, jetzt mit neuen Büchern versehene Bibliothek frei benutzen. Das ist ja mal genial, oder?
    Nach der Führung hat quasi alles schon zu gemacht, aber nach der Anreise wollte ich unbedingt noch wenigstens einmal um de kleineren See laufen, was sich Bild-technisch jawohl total gelohnt hat - obwohl, ich muss zugeben, das erste ist wieder eine Pfütze und kein See. Man bin ich froh, dass es keine Bilder gibt, davon wie ich Bilder mache...
    Nach dem kleinen Spaziergang bin ich wieder nach Hause gefahren und hab mir einen sehr langsamen und gemütlichen Abend gemacht.
    Einen tolleren Sonntag kann ich mir gar nicht wirklich vorstellen. Das Wetter war super, die Leute total lieb und ich hatte viel frische Luft und Spaß - perfekt.

    The only motivation to get out of that incredibly comfy bed was a cooked breakfast....and it paid off. We had a great stay at White Lion Hotel in Weston- and only wish our stay was longer! The accomodation, food, late night bevvies and service was brilliant- thanks guys and girls!

    Over scrambled eggs and muesli, we had deliberated over which National Trust properties to visit as today was our last day with the silver bullet- our beloved Volkswagen Golf. We arrived at Packwood House in Lapworth and spent a couple of hours wandering through beautiful pastels-worth of flowers, ancient manicured trees and a house with a rich history, touched by the presence of Royalty and major dignitaries. A highlight was being invited into a roped-off area upstairs as the lovely volunteer we were chatting to felt compelled to show us what we were missing. Turns out it was a sitting room with the best view in the house- directly aligned with the garden that we had been in minutes before. We were so chuffed!

    Anthony had been planning our trip to Whichford Pottery for months- if not only to add to his collection of hand thrown mugs he guards so fiercely. This place has such a sense of family and hard work- and when you see the productivity of the place, there’s no doubt of the passion that makes these workers and potters tick. We left empty handed- no mugs for us- but we loved our visit regardless!

    After dropping the bullet off we took the bus from Heathrow down to Woking where we find ourselves sleeping the night. Let’s just say, we’ll be sleeping with the windows closed as our hotel sits right on the high street. And it’s Saturday night...do the maths!    Read more

    There’s been something on the site for a zillion years and the property has changed hands about 8 times but the main focus is the last owner.

     In 1927 the estate was acquired by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, who owed his fortune to the fact that his father Marcus Samuel was the founder of the oil company Shell Transport & Trading. Lord Bearsted donated the house, gardens and art collection to the National Trust in 1948.

    Bit of trivia is that the name Shell came from the shells that Marcus used to collect for his father to use in decortaing boxes that he sold.

    In regards to Walter’s the art collection we are talking serious art collection. His first squash court was filled with canvases so he had to build a second. he was Chairman of Shell as well.

    It’s good to be an Oil Baron.
