    Day 27

    Last day on the Grand Union Canal

    Left Paddington at 6am to try and avoid the heat. Smooth sailing down the Paddington Arm to Bulls Bridge. Turn left towards Brentford to go on the Thames tomorrow. 9 locks on the Hanwell flight in plus 30 degrees.
    Bit of excitement at Northall when we saw the Wandsworth Prison terrorist escapee being arrested by 3 police. Were driving past as arrest happened. Also went past Blair Peach School in Southall- he was a NZer who was killed by police in the late 70s while protesting against racism. No one was held responsible    Read more

    Haworth: Bronte Parsonage

    The weather was much brighter today. The original plan had been to ride on the iconic Skipton-Settle-Carlisle railway to Appleby and back. Alas there was industrial action this week with many trains cancelled, and while we could have found a train out, there was no guarantee we'd get one home. 😕

    I felt very disappointed, as the railway was one of the reasons I chose this bnb near the railway line. We didn't want to waste this wonderful weather. Drove to the Bronte parsonage museum in Haworth just to get us out of the house.

    The day exceeded my expectations. There was much more at Haworth than the parsonage. There was a whole cobbled street full of interesting shops. I finally encountered a patchwork quilt, and I got to have a tinkle on a pipe organ!    Read more

    East Riddlesden Hall

    Today started off slowly and we didn't feel in the mood to do anything too adventurous. First job was to go into the next village (Skipton) and find a raincoat. I didn't pack one as I thought it was meant to be summer here! It's going to be rainy all week and Ian doesn't want me to catch my death of cold.
    Then we drove to East Riddlesden Hall which is only 10 minutes away from where we're staying. It's a manor house now owned by the National Trust. Wuthering Heights was filmed there apparently. Lots of old furnishings and beautiful hand crafted items. We had lunch in the Cafe (upstairs in the old barn) which was delicious.    Read more

    Cononley, North Yorkshire

    How stunning are the Yorkshire dales! Today was a tiring day of being on the road, and we are both happy to be relaxing in our next bnb. We are here till Friday.
    It was bad planning on my part to shift locations on a Sunday in regards to having a Memorial Meeting. We ended up zooming into Bedford while parked at a service centre, which was surprisingly OK! Bought Cornish pasties after our service then continued driving north.
    This farm runs sheep. Such a beautiful property! The railway line runs close by. We have a couple of train trips planned while we're here. But right now we just relax. I've just spotted a jigsaw on the shelf. Maybe I'll have a go at that.    Read more

    Day 9

    To Leeds: 1 bus, 4 trains, 1 taxi

    May 2 in England ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

    By the end of today, we had caught a bus to Waterloo Station, a train to Oxford circus, a train to Kings Cross, an express train from Kings Cross to Leeds and another train from Leeds to Bradford Interchange where we caught a taxi with a kind man called Khan to the motorhome dealership.

    Harold, the motorhome was sitting proudly in the yard waiting for us. The dealership gave us delicious cool drinks and the engineer did the motorhome handover with Marty reminding us of everything about the motorhome which is all automated by a touch screen panel.

    Soon we were on our way to IKEA Leeds to pick up our click and collect order of everything we needed to furnish the motorhome. I had enjoyed choosing what we wanted from my laptop in NZ so it was fun to finally be collecting it!

    We were hungry and after doing a few laps of half the store, we found ourselves queuing for a plate each of Swedish Meatballs, Peas, Potato & Gravy with Cranberry sauce.
    Wow did that go down a treat. I was sure Ella’s meal was too big for her but she opened her mouth like a little bird and down it went!

    It was just before 9pm that we left IKEA. The evening was still slightly light but night was upon us. We sent a message to the Rhubarb Triangle Farm Shop to see if it was too late to arrive but heard no reply. So we set off in that direction anyway but took a wrong turn at an interchange and started heading to London only realising our mistake ten minutes later.

    We turned off the motorway and kept heading the way the GPS was guiding us back but I saw something that in the dark looked like a church so we turned into the side street only to discover a large fully hedged carpark with a lovely pub restaurant. Marty went inside to ask if we could stay the night in the carpark and they very happily agreed and said they are a motorhome stopover!

    We could hardly believe we’d driven straight there as it was the perfect stopover.

    We made up the girls beds, showered them and got them into bed by 10pm. Both were uncertain about this new bed situation but eventually they accepted this was the only option they had and settled down for a peaceful nights sleep.

    Marty and I have kept unpacking things till midnight and then enjoyed hot showers in the motorhome before bed!    Read more

    Tag 12: Abbey Wood to Cononley

    Ich hatte heute etwas bange davor die 14 Meilen vom Campingplatz nach Zentral London zum Bahnhof Kings Cross zu fahren, da ich gestern den vielen Verkehr in der Stadt erlebt habe.
    Ich wollte also genug Puffer haben und halb 9 los um den Zug um 11 zu kriegen. Google sagte nämlich rund 1,5 Std.
    Weil ich viel zu schnell war, stand ich um viertel vor 8 abfahrbereit vorm Campingplatz und war allerdings erst um viertel vor 10 im richtigen Bahnhofsgebäude. Es gibt nämlich Kings Cross und St. Patras International direkt nebeneinander und beide haben Gleise ab 0 bis 10/14. Meine Befürchtungen waren aber umsonst. Hat richtig Spaß gemacht in dem Pendler Chaos aus Fahrrädern und Autos zu fahren. Kanns gar nicht beschreiben, aber war eine Erfahrung. Bin dann sogar noch über die London Tower Bridge und durchs Bankviertel.
    Am Bahnhof musste ich dann feststellen, dass die Gleise erst kurz vor Einfahrt des Zuges angesagt werden. Wie dämlich! Alle stürzen sich dann zum Zug aus dem Warte Bereich und durch diese blöden Schranken durch, wo man sein Ticket vorhalten muss. Im Zug steige ich im ausgeschrieben Fahrradabteil ein, aber halt wo denn? Ich befinde mich wie in einem normalen ICE Eingang und wunder mich, weil dort steht maximal zwei Fahrräder. Es kommt so aber niemand an mir vorbei.
    Plötzlich kommt ein Bahnmitarbeiter und schließt eine Tür zu einem kleinen Kämmerchen auf, in das man zwei Fahrräder gerade so nebeneinander hängen kann. Das ist euer Fahrradabteil? Alles klar. Ansonsten lief die Zugfahrt aber problemlos. Besonders weil Leeds auch endstation war und ich genug Zeit hatte mein Rad da raus zu wurschteln.

    Gefahren bin ich dann noch knappe 40 km zum Campingplatz und bin so gut wie im Nationalpark der Yorkshire Dales. Eine recht schöne huckelige Strecke am Kanal lang bin ich heute gefahren. Schon deutlich besser als die Tage auf dem Weg nach London.
    Für die Dales habe ich mir eine offizielle Rundstrecke für Fahrräder rausgesucht, die ich dementsprechend zur Hälfte fahre. Muss mich nur noch für eine entscheiden.

    Beim Aufbau des Zeltes hats dann angefangen zu regnen. Also schnell fertig aufgebaut und nun warte ich gerade den Regen ab. Hört hoffentlich bald auf. Ich hab Hunger!    Read more

    West Yorkshire; Hebden Bridge

    📌 Our first impressions of Hebden bridge were great, a town within a valley, on a river with small stone houses/shop fronts. The vibe was familiar to home, similar to Brunswick or Fitzroy with cool shops/pubs/ cafes and super friendly and trendy people.

    📌 We settled in over the first week in the UK, it was nice to have a bedroom, it was nice to not move tolieteries or bags. Emilie's house was lovely, old but trendy and comforting. It was especially nice to have Brunny around all the time.

    📌 The first weekend we went out for a few drinks and ended up staying out to last call, chatting with Emilie's friends including her hilarious Italian friend and another woman who had done really interesting work including Rwanda and Ethiopia.

    📌 We walked along the canals, an extensive network that goes to Manchester and all through the UK. The boats moared along the edge added a unique, charming touch.

    📌 Wednesday evening took us to the Killers, what a show, it was at the new Co Op stadium and the sound, the entertainment and crowd were brilliant. It was great fun. The evening was complemented also by a delicious dinner at a South African restaurant in the northern QTR of Manchester, a trendy and vibrant area of the city.    Read more

    Worth way

    A 17km loop around the Worth valley and over the moors. Not many photos due to the rain and also how many photos of moorland and farms does one want to see. I spare you the torture. Navigating was difficult at times due to farmers locking gates, mud, putting young inquisitive steers in the paddock I had to walk through, nettles and blackberry up to my arm pits (my legs are still tingling despite long pants). On the whole an interesting and satisfying days walking.Read more

    Steam to Keighley

    On a stormy day what else do you do but take a steam train to Cliffe castle in Keighley (pronounced keithley)
    The place was full of stuff. Including a wife calmer - see photo. Rocks, taxidermied animals, and furniture. what an interesting place and even better free to get in and see.Read more

    Top Withins aka Wuthering Heights

    Today was an excellent day for walking sunny and not too windy until I got up to Top Withins. Unlike yesterday the trail was full of people. The signs are even in Japanese as they have a lot of Japanese followers coming to visit the Bronte house, museum, and Wuthering Heights. The Japanese are fanatical and are very knowledgeable, Un like some American women I overheard in the Brontë store trying to decide who wrote what book ( it was written on the book covers … doh) and then admitted to each other they hadn’t read any of their books. 😱
    An awesome walk with stunning views of the moors and valleys. I sat quietly for a while at Top Withins and tried to imagine what it was like in the Brontes times. I passed a landslide on the way down and apparently the Brontë sisters were out there in bad weather when the landslide occurred.    Read more
