  • Day 24

    Saturday May 3

    May 3 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Gardiner, Yellowstone.
Well, we woke up to a beautiful sunny day . After a quick trip to Walmart on replenish snack supplies we hit the road for Yellowstone. It was another great drive on the interstate 90. 80mph suggested speed limit, but everyone goes faster. Beautiful drive approaching the park with the snow covered mountains in the distance. Montana is very picturesque. We are staying just outside of the northern entrance of the park for a couple of nights. We drove into the visitor centre to find out what roads are open and plan our route for the next couple of days.Read more

    Murdo to Hardin.

    May 2 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

    Friday, May 2
Today, we continued our drive across the vast crop lands and prairies of South Dakota. We took a scenic detours through the Badlands National Park. The photos are washed out and don't do the scenery justice. But it really was great to see. But huge bonus was the wildlife we weren't expecting to see. Big horned sheep, buffalo and the cutest freakin prairie dogs you will ever see. Just like meerkats and hilarious to watch. So many of them and right on the road. There were 1000's of their little mounds and burrows everywhere. Light was wrong for the photos. They aren't good.
We stopped at the famous Wall Drug for smoko. It started out as a small Cafe and morphed into this massive Badlands tourist Mecca. They did have very good apple pie and pecan caramel rolls.
Drove through a bit of Montana and finished tonight in Hardin, Wyoming. Found another little local bar and grill and had the best pork ribs. These places look like nothing from the outside, go in and its full on.

  • Day 77

    -31°C

    January 20 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ -30 °C

The past few days in Wyoming have been nothing short of incredible. I’ve split my time between snowboarding at Jackson Hole and Targhee, two very different yet equally amazing resorts. While Jackson Hole boasts higher altitudes and more challenging runs, I found myself preferring Targhee for its quieter atmosphere, stunning scenery, and less crowded slopes. Both offered unforgettable experiences, but Targhee’s charm really won me over.

Off the slopes, I spent time with Brent, whose hospitality has been outstanding. He made me feel like part of his world, sharing his home and everyday life in a way that felt authentic and warm. It’s not every day you find such a generous and welcoming host.

I also made another attempt to spot wolves, but luck wasn’t on my side. Instead, more sightings of goats and coyotes rounded out my Wyoming wildlife experience. The weather didn’t make it easy either. Temperatures plummeted to an astonishing -31°C, turning snowboarding into challenge even for me. After each slope, I was practically sprinting inside for something warm to drink!

As my time here wraps up, I’ve taken fewer photos, choosing instead to soak in the moment. I’ll leave you with a few shots I hadn’t shared before, along with the memories of this snowy adventure.

Next stop: New Zealand! A 27.5-hour journey awaits... ✈️

  • Day 73

    White Yellowstone

    January 16 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Another early start at 5:30 a.m., but this time for a bucket-list destination: Yellowstone National Park. I had high expectations for this trip, and it did not disappoint.

Our group began the journey on a bus to the park, where we switched to individual snowmobiles for the tour. The ride into Yellowstone was exhilarating—speeding across the snow-covered trails, surrounded by breathtaking volcanic landscapes blanketed in soft, powdery snow. The contrast between the white snow and the rugged terrain was stunning. We passed lakes, rivers, and wide open spaces that showcased the park’s raw beauty.

Riding a snowmobile through the park with speeds up to 61 mph (98 kmh) was thrilling, but it felt like the most stereotypically American way to explore Yellowstone. As much fun as it was, I couldn’t help but wish for more opportunities to stop, soak in the silence, and appreciate the pristine wilderness.

This visit has only deepened my appreciation for Yellowstone and left me wanting more. I know I’ll be back one day—hopefully in the summer—to hike, camp, and fully immerse myself in this extraordinary place. Bears or not, it’s worth every step.

  • Day 71

    Furs and Antlers

    January 14 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ -7 °C

Jackson Hole is home to the only commercial airport in the U.S. situated within a national park—a unique distinction that owes itself to the airport being older than Grand Teton National Park itself. With that thought in mind, today was all about exploring the park’s wildlife.

We booked a guided tour that began by car and transitioned to a horse-drawn sleigh. The snowy landscapes were enchanting, and while wildlife sightings were rare and fleeting, they were all the more rewarding when they happened.

The day began with an extraordinary sighting: wolves! They were far off in the distance, but thanks to our guide’s telescope, we had the chance to admire them. Elk were scattered throughout the park, blending seamlessly into the winter scenery, and coyotes occasionally darted into view. The most exciting moment for me was spotting moose—majestic and serene as they wandered through the snow.

The surprises didn’t stop there. On the way to dinner, we caught a glimpse of a fox making its way across the frosty terrain. It felt like the perfect ending to a day spent tracking down the region’s “big dogs”: wolves, coyotes, and a fox.

There’s a quiet thrill in seeing these animals in their natural habitat, especially in the stark beauty of winter. The experience has left me eager to visit Yellowstone, where I hope to continue this adventure and get closer to the wildlife that makes this region so special.

  • Day 70

    White Powder

    January 13 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ -10 °C

The journey from Puerto Rico to Jackson Hole wasn’t smooth sailing. My flight through Atlanta was canceled due to weather, forcing me to spend an unexpected night in the city. But the detour was a small price to pay for what awaited me in Wyoming.

Brent picked me up at the Jackson Hole airport, and the drive back to his cabin was a warm welcome despite the snowy, cold surroundings. The cabin itself is a dream—nestled in the woods, it’s cozy, peaceful, and surprisingly luxurious. I have my own private room and bathroom! Joining us is also Jass, a familiar face from the Galapagos cruise, making it a mini-reunion amidst the winter wonderland.

Today was all about embracing the snow. We went skiing and snowboarding in the mountains, braving temperatures of minus 15°C. Though it was lightly snowing and the fog obscured much of the view, the conditions were incredible. The powdery snow felt soft under our skis and boards—no ice, no crowds, just us and the pristine slopes winding through the wooded landscapes of the national parks. This was by far the best Snowboarding I ever experienced!

On our way back to Brent’s cabin, the fog finally lifted, and the sun peeked through just in time to set. The golden light on the snowy landscape was stunning, a perfect close to an adventurous day.

Despite the cold, I feel perfectly prepared thanks to Brent’s stash of winter gear. This place is magical, and I can’t wait to explore more of it in the days ahead.

    Yellowstone NP, Tag 4

    October 6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C
