Time to bid farewell to the Eternal City (for now) 🤌

After popping in to a few baroque masterpieces we headed off to the Trevi fountain and twin basilicas of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.

The origin of the two churches traces back to the 17th-century restoration of what was the main entrance to the Middle Ages and Renaissance Rome. Pope Alexander VII commissioned the monumental design to architect Carlo Rainaldi. Though the churches at first appear identical there are in fact major differences. Rainaldi was able to create one of the grandest gateways to the city, despite the plots of land for the two buildings varying significantly in proportions (as can be seen from the un-identical domes which are hexagonal and octagonal respectively). In the centre of the square stands Rome’s oldest obelisk, on of thirteen in the city.

We bid farewell to Rome as the sun did, from the top of the Spanish steps.

How quickly you captured my heart,
But I could've never imagined
That I'd miss Roma so hard.”
