  • The Left Bank

    July 3, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Home to the famous Latin Quarter and the hub of student life in Paris for over 1,000 years Paris’ Left Bank is a mix of medieval universities and chic shopping malls. We visited the cities oldest church (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) and one of its largest (Saint-Sulpice). Towering overhead is the Eiffel Tower, the first man-made structure to pass both the 200 and 300 metre mark 😱🇫🇷Read more

  • Axe historique

    July 3, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The Axe historique (“historical axis" in English), also know as Voie Triomphale ("triumphal way") extends from the centre of Paris to the West-Northwest of the city. Reaching from Notre-Dame, in the very heart of the capital, to Europe’s largest purpose built business district, La Défense. Closed by the cathedral on the East and La Grande Arche de la Défense in the West the line is home to such monuments as the Arc de Triomphe and Musée du Louvre.

Under Napoleon’s arch we paused before the tomb of the unknown soldier and the eternal flame 🔥 We then took the oldest Metro line in the city all the way down the Champs-Élysées to the Louvre.

Fire took a new meaning as we stood before Notre-Dame, rising from the ashes of the 2019 fire. Restored by hundreds of France’s best craftsmen the cathedral is set to be reopened at the end of the year 🪜👨‍🎨

  • Lindt Chocolate Factory

    July 8, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

There were no Golden Tickets or boys named Charley but there was plenty of chocolate as we walked through the doors of one of the most prestigious chocolate factories of Europe. Greeted by the largest chocolate fountain in the world, our host guided us through their museum as we enjoyed (to varying degrees) spoonfuls of melted chocolate and handfuls of different flavours.
While waiting for the ferry to take us to the factory we were entertained by a flock of swans on the lake.

  • More Mountains… (Mt. Rigi)

    July 11, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

As thousands crowded the city for the visit of Taylor Swift, our hosts tailored us a swift trip into the country. Once out of town, we rode the oldest Cogwheel train line up the side of Mt. Rigi. From a height of nearly 1,800m we had a spectacular view of the Swiss Alps.
Upon decent we sailed on a very old (antique😉) steam-piston-driven water wheel boat.
We finished our journey with a visit to Rhine Falls - Europes largest water fall.

  • The Basilica of St Peter

    July 12, 2024 in Vatican City ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Popped in to the mini-state and marveled at the Renaissance crown that is St Peter’s 🏛️🧑‍🎨

Standing atop Vatican Hill it is the largest church in Rome, and arguably the world.

We just had to climb to the top, Michelangelo’s masterpiece dome, for awe inspiring views of the ‘City of Seven Hills’.Read more

  • Colossal Colosseum

    July 15, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

Type of the antique Rome! Rich reliquary
Of lofty contemplation left to Time
By buried centuries of pomp and power!
At length—at length—after so many days
Of weary pilgrimage and burning thirst,
Thirst for the springs of lore that in thee lie,
I kneel, an altered and an humble man,
Amid thy shadows, and so drink within
My very soul thy grandeur, gloom, and glory!

  • Farewell to the Eternal City

    July 18, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Time to bid farewell to the Eternal City (for now) 🤌

After popping in to a few baroque masterpieces we headed off to the Trevi fountain and twin basilicas of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.

The origin of the two churches traces back to the 17th-century restoration of what was the main entrance to the Middle Ages and Renaissance Rome. Pope Alexander VII commissioned the monumental design to architect Carlo Rainaldi. Though the churches at first appear identical there are in fact major differences. Rainaldi was able to create one of the grandest gateways to the city, despite the plots of land for the two buildings varying significantly in proportions (as can be seen from the un-identical domes which are hexagonal and octagonal respectively). In the centre of the square stands Rome’s oldest obelisk, on of thirteen in the city.

We bid farewell to Rome as the sun did, from the top of the Spanish steps.

“I don't honestly know how it happened,
How quickly you captured my heart,
    But I could've never imagined
That I'd miss Roma so hard.”
