      Historic Core of Paris

      19. februar, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Revisited some of my favorite areas of Paris, and some of my mom's old stomping grounds :) Also, some of the scaffolding has finally been taken off of Notre Dame, so much more of that was visible than last time.Les mer

      Riding the fast lane

      3. mars 2023, Frankrike ⋅ 🌙 4 °C

      Big day sightseeing today!
Started the day with a bike tour around the city. 3 hours of riding (about 12kms) on the roads of Paris. Tour guide Audrey stayed up the front the whole time and had a ball. She handled the riding and instruction beautifully. We threw Miss Olive on a tandem bike with Nick, because we didn’t think our hearts could take letting Olive loose on the roads in Paris by herself. France isn’t ready for that yet. She had a BALL. The entire tour could hear her chatting and singing away along the streets. Nick was a little less charmed… being unable to get away from her nattering 😄.
The Eiffel Tower was on our ‘to do’ itinerary… it was… somewhat difficult! Our first attempt failed (half way through the security line we were told the top was closed temporarily due to maintenance, assured it would be open again in 15 mins). We waited in the ticket line (yep- as long as you would imagine) for the next 30+ mins and still no top open… decided to return later when it was open (it was such a spectacular rare blue sky day).
Took a Cruise down the Seine river (beautiful, but Olive’s resilience was waning and she decided she didn’t like boats… I’ll let you fill in the blanks of that story…).
So we decided we hadn’t punished ourselves enough today, and returned to the Eiffel Tower around dusk for a second attempt. Success! Top wad open! Stood in the ticket line (luckily a briefer line this time) aaaand half way through a big red sign flashes up with words I now officially hate ‘Sommet Ferme’ 🙄🙄 ‘top closed’. Due to capacity. Dear Gertrude heavens above. Making lemonade out of lemons. So we made it to the 2nd level. And it was spectacular. My love- mostly hate relationship with heights again waved it’s hand, but the beautiful sunset over Paris, the tower being lit up and catching the first glittering lights for the night together was truly magical. It was breathtakingly cold, and we didn’t last up there long (we did for once let the girls slowly explore the gift shop- it was heated!), but after all of the hassle it really was worth it. A beautiful way to end the day and a very special memory for us all.
Very tired little girls with a huge bike ride and over 18000 steps. Certainly working for those daily eclairs!

      Paris… oui!

      2. mars 2023, Frankrike ⋅ 🌙 4 °C

Another cross country train journey (on the Thalys this time) to the heart of Paris. We arrived mid afternoon to gorgeous skies and witnessed an even more gorgeous sunset over the Seine.
Our hotel is a small beautiful old 6 story building situated in Saint Germaine. We have one of the 2 top loft rooms, with a view of the Eiffel Tower from one side, and a view of Notre- Dame on the other side… what a little bit (a lot) of research can do when you are Nick booking accommodation 😜.
The girls have little beds under gable windows that look out to the Eiffel Tower. We couldn’t feel more quintessentially in Paris if we tried! (OK… so we did try)- we headed to the nearest patisserie and ordered chocolate eclairs (in very bad French- which is totally endearing if you are a 7 and 9 year old… they already have the stern French wrapped around their little fingers with ‘bonjour madame’ ‘merci monsieur’ in impressively articulate French compared with their parents… who sound more like ‘Mer-cee’).
Audrey has decided that she will put a limit on herself of maximum 5 eclairs a day (her face in the photo after her first bite says it all), and Olive has decided she would like to move here. Even without stepping foot in a cheese (Fromages) shop yet.
The girls have been talking about the art installation on Louis Vuitton building since they saw photos a couple of months ago- and they spotted the colourful dots from our hotel window… so we also had to find the building where they stood proudly infront and sang loudly ‘I could have my Gucci on… I could wear my Louis Vuitton…’ (thank you Meghan Trainor… that song has been the soundtrack to our holiday 🙄). Sooo… yes… our little kangaroos are standing out here in Paris 🤣

      A whole new world

      6. mars 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

A huge day, and a short blog today. We made the trip out to Disneyland and had an epic 10 hours, 20,000 step adventure through the Disney park. The weather was cold, and we even had a small flurry of snow while waiting for the carousel 🎠- but the toe numbing temps didn’t dampen down the girls enthusiasm. The lines weren’t too bad (all considering how long Disney lines can be). The kids were at an ideal age for peak Disney magic, the rides are very much catered for smaller children… meaning Nick had a fabulous time riding the carousel, teacups and (his favourite) the Peter Pan ride. After a 40 minute line (the longest of the day) we floated above London in a magical ship, dodging Captain Hook and his crocodiles… Nick whispered to me ‘this is sh*t’ in the same breath as Olive turned to us and said ‘I feel magical!!’ ✨… and that theme continued throughout the day 🤣
The girls wandered happily through the park wearing mouse ears, eating dodgy theme park food, in the cold happy as little pigs in mud. We wandered around behind them, happy at the joy on their faces (with frostbitten toes…).
The culmination of the day was the firework spectacular at the Disney castle. Olive on my shoulders, Auds in Nicks arms (the parents couldn’t see a thing 🤣), the music swelled to a crescendo, the fountains sprayed geysers high in the air, the fireworks came thick and fast and the girls both bawled their eyes out… we thought that it might have been because the day was ending, but both said it was because they were ‘so happy’… ❤️ we think it might have been the sheer exhaustion combined with poor nutrition and the emotive way Disney pulls at the heartstrings… but we will go with their interpretation 😘

      On y va Paris

      17. juli 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Last night we had a lovely final dinner and this morning a nice final breakfast . There was a lot of waiting around but our taxi got us to the Avignon Gare and now we are on the TGV train to Paris. The trip was very quick and easy the only difficulty was getting our bags up and down the stairs. Gare di lyon was very busy and we had to wait for ages for a taxi but our hotel in San Germain is very nice and we had a lovely lunch nearby and went for a pleasant walk. Paris is exciting to be in again❤️❤️🇫🇷Les mer

      Departure day morning

      21. juli 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We have to check out by midday from our hotel but we are not leaving until about 11 pm tonight so it will be a long day. Craig and I got up early and went for a lovely walk not very far away to see the Luxembourg Gardens. The Luxembourg Palais is now the Senate but the gardens adjacent to it are open to the public and they are magnificent with many statues and lovely flower beds and a couple of lakes with fountains. We actually feel a bit cool this morning. On the way back we also saw the Saint Sulpice Cathedral which is also Gothic but had lovely statues in it and a pop-up confessional. I particularly like the Italian looking pulpit With matching staircase is leading up to it. France and Paris in particular certainly has many beautiful things in it.Les mer

      Last day lunch and waiting

      21. juli 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Craig did not feel great so we stayed in our room until midi checkout. We then took them for a walk and eventually parted for lunch which we had at Le Danton. Salad was good 👍. On the way back to the hotel we walked past Le Procope which is apparently the oldest cafe in the world. Started by a siciliano of this surname many famous writers dined here including Voltaire. Apparently even Napoleon Bonaparte dined here and he couldn’t pay so he left his hat there and never went back to get it. Believe it or not🇮🇹🇮🇹. Looong day of waiting. But we did manage some retail therapy at the Desigual shop and then did another little walk around this beautiful city and finally found a millefeuille to enjoy. But we both agreed it’s not as good as Murattis. At airport in lounge and still waiting, waiting, waiting.Les mer

      Wafflesand crepes Paris style

      15. april 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

I talked Doug into grabbing some lunch before heading to our next tour. Under the Notre Dame hotel across from the Cathedral that I stayed in last December, there is a waffle and crepe house that I wanted to try. So, in we went and luckily we got a table quickly as they were getting very busy with the lunch crowd.
This vintage looking diner serves fresh made milkshakes, and all kinds of waffles and crepes.
Doug ordered a goat cheese, sauteed leeks, walnuts and acaia honey waffle, while I ordered a salted caramel and praline crepe. Both were delicious! Washed down with a mango milkshake, we left the shop with wonderful memories on our tongue.
France is famous for its food and it did not disappoint us during this meal!

      Paris - Day 3

      30. september 2017, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

A more relaxed srart to the day today. Got to the train by 9:30 to get a train to Versailles. Arrived and bought our tickets at the train station. The crowds at the palace were frustrating. Could not move or see more than what was above people's shoulders. Got through the palace and headed for the gardens. Much better there. Gardens are phenomenal. Ideally would need a whole day with half the volume of viewers to enjoy this attraction. Relaxed at the hotel for a while before going out to find a place for dinner. Found a place and had a very good dinner. Stolled for a while in Latin district and then headed back to pack for home. According to my onboard health monitoring system, I have logged more than 350000 steps in September. Don't know how I am going to keep up that pace. See you soon.Les mer

      Paris - Day 1

      28. september 2017, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Started the day with breakfast in our room. Shopped last night and bought croissants yogurt and coffee. Six Euros as opposed to 16 each. No brainer. Rode the hopon hopoff. Saw the Arch de Triumph and the Eiffel tower. Walked Champs- Elysees and had lunch there. Got caught in a traffic jam around the Concorde tower. Motorcycle, taxi and big truck. Took about 20 minutes to move 100 feet. More of the same tomorrow.Les mer
