  • From Akron to Burton, Ohio

    17 juni 2022, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

It was an amazing day. We started out at a trailhead a little north of the previous days ride to avoid the trail and road closures. Brian and Ryan went to play golf so the ladies had the day to ourselves.

We road the Tow Path trail for the first 13 miles and then headed north and east. There were a few long and very steep hills. I'm sure the grade of one was close to 15%. Jan's bicycle is geared for climbing and the tandem has a triple ring so climb that bad boy we did!

We ended our 43 mile ride in Burton, OH. What a wonderful small town. There are lots of amish in the area and a rich preserved history. We decided against riding to the Inn where we were staying because it was another 10+ hilly miles into a 16mph headwind. Instead we went to a local Coffee and Wine shop and had good coffee and sandwiches. We wandered around the town and waited for our chariot to arrive. It was much cooler today so it was definitely a nice way to spend the afternoon.

We drove to punderson Manor Lodge at Punderson State Park. What a delightful place. They have an indoor and outdoor pool, a golf course and many cabins. We walked on the boardwalk all along the lake and then had a had a relaxing dinner on the patio with live music. Stay tuned for tomorrow's lodging! We get to ride along Lake Erie tomorrow. I am not in a hurry to leave early because we are going from HEAT WAVE to BBBBBRRRRR!

PS: Somebody set the school on fire in Burton! Well, there was a fire anyway!

Not good reception so pictures will come later.

Well, this morning it is 52* and a 15 mph NNW wind. 😳 We got out the long sleeves because a 40 degree temperature drop feels brutal. We'll see how it goes. It should be easier to stay hydrated.

    We made the paper!

We went to a delicious Italian restaurant a d then Heavenly Ice Cream. The owner went to France to learn the art of ice cream making which he makes in the Basement of the building which h is a small old church. The B&B has a salt water pool but it is 65*. I'll pass this time.

  • Conneaut, Ohio to Erie, PA

    19 juni 2022, Förenta staterna ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

We started the day with a made to order breakfast. Dale was a gracious host and I would highly recommend their bed and breakfast. We took our time getting started on the road because because we had to wait for our delicious breakfast settle and it wasn't going to be overly warm today.

It ended up being a short but beautiful ride with only 2 hills to write home about. I was really excited when I realized that all of the fields that we were riding by belong to Spring hill nursery where I order all my plants from from.

After Spring hill nursery we stopped at a gas station to get a drink. I talked to the cashier for a few minutes and she said that drugs were really a problem in their area. She said it was really sad because a lot of young mothers have gotten into cocaine and heroin and meth..

We ended up staying at an amazing hotel right on like Erie with a view of Presque Isle. Brian got in a round of Father's Day golfing while the ladies rested and recuperated.

Tomorrow our goal is either Dunkirk or Silver CityAnd on to Buffalo New York the following day. On Wednesday we will cross the Peace Bridge in to Canada.

  • Erie, Oh to Dunkirk, NY

    20 juni 2022, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We left a wonderful hotel on the water and worked at finding our way through Erie. There were bike detours and road detours and we took a wrong turn or 2. I finally talked to a local who told me to go 6 blocks up to 6th street and turn left which took us right back to our route. There was a little bit of confusion because 6th street ran right through the federal courthouse. Once we got that figured out it was pretty smooth sailing from there. Our route took us right back to highway 5 which was a straight shot into Dunkirk. It was a great road to bike on with a nice shoulder. Brian texted us and told us to watch for the amazing views ahead and he was definitely right. We were surrounded by grape vineyards and Lake Erie off to our left.

We were looking for a place to stop when we saw the sign that said that we were entering New York. We stopped to take a picture of the sign only to see the truck and trailer in the background. Of course it was parked at the little municipal golf course which allowed Brian to play in the State of New York on his way to Canada. We stopped at the quaint little lighthouse and the one and only gas station for about 30 miles to get a snack and something to drink. It was much cooler today which maded it great to bike. The route was also relatively flat which made for an easy day. Today's ride was about 57 miles. Tomorrow will take us into Buffalo, New York and the following day we will be crossing the Peace Bridge in to Canada.

    Erie to Dunkirk Continued...

    Julie Witherspoon was born here!

  • Brian picked a BAD hotel!

    21 juni 2022, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

So the competition is fierce because Marlene has chosen some amazing places to stay. It was Brian's turn to choose one in Buffalo. I will admit that it didn't look bad on the internet but.....

ROOM 110 - The fan sounded like it wad about to take off or catch on 🔥

ROOM 112- You could hear said fan from 110 AND it smelled like cigarette smoke.

ROOM 122- The hotel clerk wad hoping that the 3rd one wad a charm. We passed the weedy courtyard to nowhere and decided that we just couldn't do it. "Lilly wouldn't want us to!"

So back in the truck we went. We decided to go ahead and cross into Canada and skip riding through Buffalo, NY. It looked kind of tricky .

So the tide was beautiful from Dunkirk, NY to Orchard Park.

We drove to Niagara Falls to find a decent hotel and Jan and Brian teamed up for a win. There is an amazing view of the Canadian Falls from the window by the elevator.

Brian did get in a game at a NY course. Tee time is 8:15am for a game in Canada. See you tomorrow. He promised pictures so we will see if he delivers...

P.S.We waited outside for half an hour to watch fireworks that were mostly obscured by a 🌳

  • We Followed The Drinking Gourd

    22 juni 2022, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

We woke up early so Brian could make his Tee Time. It was nice and cool and the main street wasn't busy so overall it was good. We followed alongside the Niagra River. You could feel the power of the river and it offered some stunning views.

We rode up through Niagra -On The Lake toward and then headed west. We stopped at Il Gelato di Carlotta and treated ourselves to some delicious cookies.

People in Canada are so kind and eager to be helpful.

In St. Catherine's we were stopped to find our road and the bus driver exited his bus to help us navigate. He also told us how to find the church that Harriet Tubman attended. We took a turn off our route so we could go see it.

Back on our route we headednon with our goal being Hamilton, Ontario Canada. Fortunately there was a little business of an IT Professional and a masseuse because it started raining. They let us bring our bikes inside and wait it out.

Yesterday the SAG Wagon went through Angola, New York. It is also right in US HWY 20.

We drove back some of the route to look at some of the beautiful properties on Lake Erie.

We also stopped at Greycliff which is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous houses. We were only allowed to see it from the garden because a tour was going on. This was the couple 's summer home. Their primary residence was in Buffalo NY.Läs mer

  • Owen Sound Ontario Canada

    24 juni 2022, Kanada ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

We left Hamilton Ontario and and decided to drive out a ways to see where a safe place to start biking would be. It was through the city and some places had biking lanes and some places didn't. We ran into quite a bit of construction and and it looked dangerous to bike through those areas. Outside of the city it got very hilly and curvy and had no biking shoulder. The consensus was to just drive to owenson Ontario Canada. We found a nice hotel right on the Georgia Bay and decided to spend 2 nights.

Brian got a tea time at cobble beach to play 18 holes. That was the highlight golf course of his trip trump so he felt like he was ending on a high note. We decided to drive back to Collingwood and bike the last 42 miles of the route into Owen Sound.

We found the trail beside the Walmart parking lot has started our journey on a flat trail for the 1st 9 miles. We rode past the Ski slopes and Lake Huron was on our right. Once we got off the trail and onto the road the journey began. We were about to find out what we were made of! We saw signs for the blue mountains and Hilly it was. We climbed one hill that is probably the hardest thing I've ever done on a bicycle. It had to be over a mile of climbing and part of it was almost a 12% grade. We climbed from sea level to 1900' and it was rated extremely steep. Jan was going strong until she got blown off the road by a big truck. I went back to take a picture of the hills when low and behold there she was riding up the hill! She had to get back on at the steepest part of the incline to get the rest of the way up the hill which is a phenomenal feet! We might have pulled out every curse word we know but we all made it!!!

We continued on and it was still pretty rough riding. The next 10 miles We're on a rough road with no shoulder and quite a bit of truck traffic. Finally we were rewarded with some amazing downhills. Coming back into Owen sound there was still a little bit of climbing but nothing like going out of Collingwood. The last couple of miles as we rolled into Owen's San Ontario Canada rewarded us with some nice downhill riding in 2 to a park where we were greeted by our amazing sag driver. It was a pretty emotional and knowing that we had made it to the end of our journey.

I am sure that we will all walk away with some lessons learned and some new insights. We have found the Canadians to be a lovely group of people. It is their pleasure to help you and just be kind. As the bellhop at our hotel in Niagara Falls stated: "We don't look up and we don't look down!"

I think that's a good place to end.
