  • Brunch

    August 10, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Here at Big Nine you can get a really delicious breakfast at a fair price. Definitely a recommendation!

Fair prices aren't often found here. Why? Here in the border region, so close to the Swiss border, the prices are easily 20-30% higher than in Hamburg.

The restaurants and shops are heavily frequented by Swiss people, so the prices are made for the Swiss wallet, which is filled with a salary that is almost twice as high.

If you want to avoid this, you have to drive a little deeper into Wiesental or further into the rural areas of France.

  • Vive la France

    August 12, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Every time I'm here, I cycle over to France at least once. There I buy all kinds of tasty treats: cheese, creme brulee, cider, wine, air-dried salami and fish. Then everything is transported back to Basel in the bike bags and a feast is prepared. 😋😋😋Read more

  • Parc des Eaux Vives, Huningue

    August 12, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

The Canal de Huningue is a shipping canal completed in 1828 in the town of Hunigue in Alsace.

In the town of Huningue itself, the canal's harbor, which had been disused since 1962, was converted into the artificial whitewater area Parc des Eaux Vives between 1992 and 1993.

The canal bed was considerably redesigned, around 50,000 m³ of material was moved, and artificial, partly variable obstacles were built into the course of the river.

The average level of difficulty is level II, in places (e.g. entrance wave) level III.

A canal runs parallel to the 350 m long whitewater canal back to the weir, along which canoeists can paddle back and only have a short portage.

The whitewater park is operated by the city of Huningue.

  • Observing submarine life

    August 12, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

I discovered this guy today as I was sitting on the banks of the Rhine to dry off after swimming in the Rhine.

I think it's great how he's absorbed in observing the underwater world. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Rhine bank

    August 12, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

The banks of the Rhine were desolate and barren for decades. Only recently have the residents of Basel discovered the banks of the Rhine for themselves.

Stalls and cafes now line the banks and Rhine swimmers stroll along them.

People spend cosy summer days and summer evenings on the Rhine steps and in the summer months free concerts are held on the raft in front of them.

  • Chilli con Carne

    August 14, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today we met with two very old friends, an artist from 5th grade, living in this wonderful flat with this wonderful balcony and a politically committed friend from 10th grade who has been living in the wagon camp in Göttingen for a long time.

From time to time we meet, this time all together here in Schopfheim where we all went to school.

So we met, went shopping for groceries, cooked together and hung around until late in the night.

What a wonderful evening - thank you universe that my life is so rich and inspiring 😘.

  • Schillighof

    August 16, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we had dinner at the Schillighof, a restaurant that has been welcoming guests for over 160 years on a nearly 400 year old farm.

A very long time in which a lot has changed - not so the restaurant. The guest room is almost unchanged. There are still the old floorboards and the old, very low wooden ceiling that you can easily hit your head on. In addition, the old tiled stove at the regulars' table still serves as the only heating in winter.

In 1852, Johann Friedrich Mutterer acquired the license to run a restaurant on the Schillighof. Now it is run by the 6th generation. In 2019, the Schillighof (Hirschen) was handed over to the younger generation Asal.

The menu is not very diverse, traditional Markgräfler and Black Forest cuisine. If you are fine with that I definitely recommend a visit there.

  • Museum Tinguely

    August 17, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Jean Tinguely (22 May 1925 – 30 August 1991) was a Swiss sculptor best known for his kinetic art sculptural machines (known officially as Métamatics) that extended the Dada tradition into the later part of the 20th century.

Tinguely's art satirized automation and the technological overproduction of material goods.

When I go swimming in river Rhine, I enter at the Museum Tinguely and this is the area around it.

It's an amazing museum so when you are around while bad weather, visit it! You will definitely not regret it.

  • markt:wirt:schaft Butzbach

    August 18, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

As always, we picked out a restaurant on the way, this time in Butzbach. Apart from the fact that Butzbach is a picturesque little town with lots of half-timbered houses, the food was really delicious and the service was great too.

    Highly recommend!
