  • Strike here, strike there...

    12 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

    ... strike everywhere.

I landed 🛬 here 10 minutes early and thought: Great ❤️, now you can easily pick up your suitcase 🧳 and still catch the bus at 1:45 p.m. without any stress. 🚌

Fiddlesticks! They're on strike here too 😳 and now I have to take the bus at 4:15 p.m.

Well, I won't be in Modica until 6:30 p.m. and then I still have 2 hours to go by car 🚗. Not that it took me a while longer in Hamburg because the train 🚉 was on strike and therefore in addition I preferred to add a bit of a buffer.

Well, 13.5 hours of odyssey is something! 🤣

  • Modica

    12 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

    Arrived by bus 🚌.

Now I'm curious whether Alberto will come to bring me the car 🤔.

  • My privat beach

    13 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

After my odyssey yesterday I had a good night's sleep 🌛 and unpacked 🧳 this morning, I went to the beach ⛱️ to explore the area.

There aren't many houses 🏡 here, a few holiday homes owned by mainland Italians and a few sheep 🐑🐑🐑 farmers. The beach is deserted, only the shepherd peeked around the corner to find out why the dogs 🐶 were barking so much. So I met dogs 🐕 and sheep 🐑 on the beach.

The beach is 200m from the house and between the ocean 🌊 and the house there are dunes, perfect for a morning and lunch walk. I would estimate 16 degrees as water temperature, so the sea is too cold for swimming 🏊, unless I start ice bathing - I'll think about it.

In any case, I'm very happy ❤️ with the first impression and excited to see how the next two months develop. 🤗

  • Butera

    13 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Today I drove with two girls from the house to Butera. This is a place on the mountain that is definitely busy in summer.

Now in winter there are no tourists to be seen anywhere and we were able to stroll through the streets unmolested.

It's really a nice little town with a great atmosphere and a great view. Well, there was also a great corretto and great arrancini, but more on that later 😋.

  • Take your routine with you

    14 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

This is my terrace, i.e. our terrace. We also have a balcony, there you can see further, but the terrace is right in front of my patio door.

I'll probably work at this spot from tomorrow on.

Later on I will explain in more detail what kind of house this is. In short, it's a kind of hostel, with vacation in return if you want, single or shared rooms or even an apartment in full rent, like me. There are currently 10 people living here with me, many of them long-term, some medium-term like me and some really just for a 2 week vacation.

We cook together and shop together, but I also have my own kitchen, so I can completely withdraw if the hustle and bustle gets too much. Since I have “weird” meal times, it remains to be seen how this all fits together. But if I travel so much I need to hold onto something, so I take my brunch routine with me 😋.

  • Ice bathing in test

    14 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

It's cool today because the storm front passed through two days ago. 14 degrees air temperature, 16 degrees water temperature. In the sun it is of course warm enough for t-shirt and shorts.

The perfect test for "ice bathing" 🏊🤪.

I'm thrilled, it works great ❤️ if you can lounge in the sun ☀️ to dry afterwards and you don't need bathing clothes 👙 either.

I will stick to that! 😍

  • Hairdryer

    16 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Today it was warm at 18 degrees but also windy. Perfect weather to let the wind dry my freshly washed hair.

Apparently not only that, but also perfect weather for fishing.

As I was walking along the beach in my little dress, I met a local fisher who was obviously used to different temperatures. He asked me to take a photo of him in his thick jacket. Coincidentally, his fish also ended up in the photo.

I said "Non parlo italiano" three times, but that didn't stop him from chatting endlessly in Italian while I took the photo of him for him.

He immediately sent the photos to his friend, who also called immediately. What a relief when his buddy called! I left there quietly and secretly.

Phew, I went back to letting the wind dry my hair...

  • Good morning Sicilia

    18 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

I know I still haven't taken any photos of the house and the apartment, but Monday to Thursday I work a lot and I invest the 2 hour lunch break in swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ and sunny 🌞 walks on the beach 🏖️.

Although I get sunrise over an hour earlier in the morning and 45 minutes more in the evening, there isn't much sun left after ending my work at 5 p.m. Today I'll try to take a few photos and a film during my lunch break. Then I'll write what kind of house this is in the evening, this might be of interest for you.

That's the view I see when I fall out of bed in the morning 🥱.

  • Vela Vega

    18 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I live here in a house called Vela Vega, some days ago we were 10 people living here.

There are two apartments with their own kitchen and bathroom and two rooms on the ground floor with a shared kitchen and bathroom and three rooms upstairs with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

Both large kitchens are shared kitchens for everyone, so we cook and eat together once a day in the evening, and then we can sit together in the shared living room or on the balcony. So people cook, shop and wash up together and the costs are shared equally.

Let’s call it a community house with some place to retreat. You can stay here in different ways, as I said, in a shared room (there is also one 4-person room) or in an apartment. But you can also participate in different ways, as volunteers are welcome.

Either you pay in full, then only cooking and eating together is obligatory, or you help out for around 20 hours a week, then you only pay for food.

When I arrived there were 10 of us, two of whom had just left. 8 people will stay until the end of January, then 4 people will leave. At least three more people will be added at the beginning of February and the rest is currently still up in the air.

The house is located at a distance of 200m to the sea and there are only dunes between us and the ocean. It has a beautiful permaculture garden, which was created by the owner's son and is maintained by the volunteers.

The owner has a small bungalow on the property right next to the villa where she lives. There are currently 4 volunteers, but from February on, there will only be three.

In any case, I think so far that it is a successful mix of community and retreat but I can tell more end of February 😉.

  • Aperitivo

    19 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

In Italy, the term "aperitivo" refers not only to the aperitif itself, but also to the habit of meeting friends in the evenings in the cities for a drink in bars and pubs, with small snacks being eaten.

The Spaniards use the term Tapeo for this very purpose, derived from Tapas, which also involves drinking alcohol. The Spanish verb "tapear" means "to go through bars and restaurants to eat tapas."

In northern Italy, the aperitivo culture is widespread in all cities in Lombardy, as well as in the neighboring provinces and in many ski resorts in the Alps. The aperitivo is known in many bars in Genoa, Turin, Rome and Naples, but in the southern part of Italy and on the islands it hardly exists.

    Luckily here 😍.

  • Good night Scilia

    20 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The evenings and nights here are wonderful. The play of colors is impressive. The atmosphere is so clear and the remaining light is so low, that you can see an incredible starry sky. Siri, the owner, brought her now grown son's telescope with her when she moved here from Berlin. It is a very simple telescope and allows you to marvel at the lunar craters 🌔 extremely well. We recently saw Jupiter 🪐 and its moons 🌕🌒🌓🌔.

    What a gift!

  • Licata

    21 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Licata is a 20 to 30 minute drive from here, depending on where you want to go. So it's a little closer than Gela and, above all, much nicer!

At first I thought it would be 45 minutes but I must have either been looking at the clock wrong or got lost. It was definitely the clock 🤣.

It's located 47 kilometers southeast of Agrigento on the coast. Approximately 35,000 residents live here, mainly working in agriculture and industry. There are also jobs in the service industry and tourism. However, there is very little tourism, now in January I haven't seen a single tourist.

It's also located on the Canicattì–Syracuse railway line. The port of Licata is one of the most important export ports in Sicily.

The area of the municipality was already inhabited in the Paleolithic. The Phoenicians lived here as early as 1000 BC and did some trade. Although Licata is now predominantly an industrial and commercial town, the city offers some attractions.

So there are quite some things to see and it's fun to sit in a café on the main street or stroll through the alleys.

How cool that this city has so far remained unknown to the large tourist flows ❤️.

  • Cannoli siciliani

    22 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Cannoli siciliani consist of a deep-fried rolling pin with a sweet, creamy filling made from ricotta, which can contain vanilla, cocoa, chocolate chips or candied fruit.

I ate a lot until now but as always the taste differs greatly. This time I found great ones at the Pasticceria Sombrero in Licata. I bought four different ones. While eating I decided that I liked the large chocolate one best.

Some food historians place the origins of cannoli in 827–1091 in Caltanissetta in Sicily, by the concubines of princes looking to capture their attention. This period marks the Arab rule of the island, known then as the Emirate of Sicily, giving rise to the theory that the etymology stemmed from the Arabic word qanawāt meaning „tubes“ in reference to their tube-shaped shells. During this time, the Arabs influenced Sicilian baking with the introduction of candied fruits, pistachios, and cinnamon. They also introduced the technique of combining nuts and fruits with sugar and honey.

In any case: give it a try!

  • Flower power goes permaculture

    23 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I've probably already mentioned that I live in a permaculture villa.

This means that there are a lot of plants mixed up in the garden. Of course not really mixed up, because they are of course arranged with sense and reason.

There are lots of vegetables, fruit trees, flowers and herbs.

Today I will show you a selection of flowers that are currently blooming in the garden, of course bougainvillea hovering above all 🌸🌸🌸❤️.

  • My lunch break

    24 Januari 2024, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Today I want to show you my daily lunch time routine.

I usually work from 7 in the morning to 5 in the evening. So I neither miss the early birds, nor the late birds and in addition I have time for undisturbed works in the morning.

This would exceed my weekly working time, if I would not do a long lunch break.

When I work in Germany, this lunch break is peppered with medical appointments, pre-worship pleasures, yoga or swimming to ease the (luckily no more chronic) back pain (too much sitting) - a win-win situation.

But not only that, it's a win-win-win situation, because here in workation I can use the time to swim in the sea, to go for a walk to dismiss my back and also to have lunch.

So this is how my daily path to the sea looks like ❤️.
