After finding a well hidden camp spot last night I was in no rush to leave this morning, especially after the progress of the last few days. So I only got back on the path at about 10am. From Mevagissey it became very difficult walking and an absolute rollercoaster with continuous ups and downs for several kilometres. I also had to skirt round the town of Duporth due to a path diversion from fallen cliffs. What's more both my pairs of socks were still wet from yesterday so I was just keen to avoid picking up any blisters. Weirdly I encountered literally noone as well despite this being one of the least remote stretches I've been on yet. Reading that back makes it sound pretty negative but I'm in decent spirits still!Lue lisää

Rather fittingly the path to Par ran almost entirely along a golf course. The polar opposite to the other side of Charlestown, this was the easiest ground I'll make all journey. It's also the first place with an actual supermarket rather than a village shop that I've come across.Lue lisää

The heavens opened as I knew they would, but the challenges of adventures such as these are 95% mental. I'd like to thank Kanye for the music to get me through it. Who knew how helpful having a psycho shout at you could be. Gribbin Head marks the first landmark over 100 miles from Penzance station and so with that little achievement I think that concludes my fifth full walking day. Time to hide in the doorway of this lighthouse looking tower thing until the rain subsides and I can be bothered to put up a tent

Wow, Fowey is incredibly pretty, I feel like I am in Italy right now, there is even the sound of distant bells chiming. Probably my favourite village I've been through yet. My original plan last night was actually to camp in St Catherine's Castle (pic 5), and it's a shame about the weather and the condition of my feet yesterday because I definitely could have made it there and gotten away with it. Scenic coastline, scenic weather, warm but with just enough breeze. But that was bloody hard work, it's to be expected with over 35,000 m of elevation gain hiking the entire path but damn there were some giant ascents and descents along those cliffs. Had a chat with a New Zealander chap halfway from Polruan who was carrying a ridiculous amount of gear and said he was planning on effectively hiking for 4½ months straight, and of course I met a few Germans along the way again as well.

Just enjoying a Cornish pasty here and the woman next to me had her ice cream stolen by a vicious seagull, then every seagull in a one mile radius basically piled in to snatch it from them. It's a dog eat dog world love, can't be waving ice creams around like there's no tomorrowLue lisää

A campsite?! Bay view farm, probably time for the first wash of the trip. The woman running this place is completely nuts, she ranted at me about random things for like 15 minutes. Anyway time for some rest, my feet are absolutely destroyed, seriously need my shoes to dry out completely tonight. Will be turning my phone off now to save some battery.

Some days it can be really hard to find the strength to get going, other days start out with incredible highs. Today was definitely the former of the two, and until 10am I was certain that I'd make today a rest day. But I'm glad I didn't, the smallest thing can change your outlook. Walking down into Seaton I met two women, both about 50-60, one was called Carol and the other, whose name I've sadly forgotten, said she had decided to walk this path after her husband had passed away last year and they always planned to walk it together after reading the book 'the salt path'. So without any training whatsoever and having never walked before here she was, trekking all this way in memory of her husband. They were also just very nice people and took the time to listen about my story of walking the path too. I hope they reach the end alright!Lue lisää

Just sat and drank my tea for an hour with Neil Ingham, a 56 year old, millionaire underground DJ from London who's walking this path for charity and finds Fatboy Slim 'a bit cheesy'. Well this is the ideal place to shelter from the hostile conditions that are going to rain down for the next few hours, Queen Adelaide's Grotto. I'm incredibly tempted to stay here all night and make this my literal man cave. The route since Looe has actually been really quite mild, today was all about the people I met along the way.

So sleeping in a cave was about as comfortable as you'd imagine. Don't get me wrong, it was a top of the range cave but I don't think you'll be finding it on booking.com any time soon. And with this morning's trudge through Kingsand and into Cremyll, I have officially completed all 280 miles of Cornish coastline. Now to hitch a ride across the Tamar and then it's *just* 217 miles along South Devon and Dorset to go.Lue lisää

It's a tiny village you've probably never heard of it. If you found Looe having two Coops as startling as I did, then hearing that Plymouth has 30 Coops could well give you a stroke. It also happens to have seven Lidls, five Wetherspoonses and an en-route McDonalds. Apparently Sir Francis Drake concluded a game of bowls down on the hoe, where Smeaton's tower now stands, just before sailing out to defeat the Spanish armada (bet he skilled Ortega). Nowadays it's clearly still got naval significance as I could see a giant warship circling from where I was (not) sleeping all night.

I definitely could go further, but it's becoming increasingly urgent that I manage my feet, the last few days have seen the number of blisters and aches I've been getting multiply quickly, especially since consecutive days of heavy rain. It's a marathon not a sprint (well technically 24 marathons). Could be a windy night, I hope I get some good sleep because I'm exhausted. I'm not even sure how I made any distance today tbh it felt like 90% of it was spent in the pub.

In spite of the howling wind, I was completely knocked out the whole night. First action of the day took me to Wembury, where a marker indicated the first passing of the ⅔ point of the trail. I took the Ferry to Noss Mayo with a friendly couple from Yorkshire and after a pretty boring stretch of walking, I am waiting in a café in Mothecombe and talking to some friendly paddle boarders from Devizes. The Erme river is my current obstacle and it can only be forded an hour either side of low tide, which still isn't for another 5 hours yet. The only alternative is an 8 mile hike on country roads around the estuary so I'm at something of a crossroads where my hand is forced into slow progress for the remainder of the day.Lue lisää

Bigbury-on-Sea or bust. Today was pure willpower, I could have waited until 8pm to cross the Erme Estuary at low tide, but even then, it was forecast to be a high low tide and the conditions are horrible so it could well have been impassable. Another option was to get an Uber around but I didn't consider this for long for the sake of integrity (and being a cheapskate). When I started this trip I also gave myself the goal of trying to achieve a one million step month, so I thought at least tarmac could be some easy miles. And so I took the whole 10.5 mile detour around by foot instead, taking me along an A-road for miles in part. It felt like a very long and unpleasant journey. But life will have to throw more at me than just persistent rain, A-road walking, unexpected 10.5 mile add-ons, and not knowing where I'm sleeping tonight to name but a few. This type of trip is all mindset and testing your resolve and it really has forced me to think opportunistically; the mist is longer just bad weather, it's perfect conditions to hide my tent without being seen.Lue lisää

So in spite of all that opportunistic nonsense I was just spouting I quite literally stumbled across this cheap campsite and I'm not saying no, especially as they said they don't mind what time I leave tomorrow. Also interesting to note that today I passed at some point (but didn't see) Jim Morton, who is on day 424 of walking the entire British coastline in the opposite direction to me and I follow his Facebook page (called 'I may be gone a while')

Been enjoying today so far, feels incredible to be well rested and clean as I only got going at 11. Had the funniest ferry experience yet trying to cross the Avon river, I had to ring a bell from the other side and wave to the boat house. The tide was looking so low I was fearing another long detour but sure as day, a man on a tiny boat came out to collect me. Weather is back to its best as well, I could just do with more ice cream....Lue lisää

Today has been absolutely incredible. The stretch from Bolt Tail to Bolt Head was so scenic and pretty easy walking. It is absolutely one of the highlights of the whole path, couldn't recommend it as a day walk (between Salcombe and Hope Cove) enough. Even had my favourite interaction with anyone (or anything) on the journey yet, a rather dashing cow. Now to kick back with another 8 twisters, a beer, 4 donuts and a baguette because why tf notLue lisää

So there I was at 17:30, with my half eaten box of ice lollies and lager, waddling towards the ferry to catch the last one of the day over to East Portlemouth. I just about made it in time and it was certainly the choppiest ride yet of the nine ferries the path has taken me on. For the rest of day, there was the pleasant wafting of freshly baked bread from my backpack too, maybe I'll do that more.

Not sure what this is meant to be the start point for but God this is an empty part of Devon. It's such a hot day, I'm absolutely sweltering too. I've met too many people since the last post to mention them all but last night particularly was the most enjoyable, I met a couple from Southampton who were staying in a luxury hotel just above where I was camped and they shared their experience of hiking in Patagonia and Nepal with me. I know I've been walking north, but don't worry, I've ended up at the better Blackpool. There were plenty of little settlements along the way: Beesands, Torcross and Strete, but none of them particularly noteworthy enough to smack down a footprint. Torcross to Strete involved walking a large part alongside Slapton Ley, which is supposedly the largest natural lake in the West country. Also supposedly from the nearby beaches is where much of the practice for D-Day took place. But ngl I'm just trying not to sizzle, it is seriously hard work in this weather; I'm now sheltered in a pretty nice café inhaling some chips.Lue lisää

A really friendly local chap out walking his dog and fishing in the evening actually pointed me to this spot, it's lovely, even complete with my own bench. What more could you possibly ask for?

Ain't no quim like to party like the quim down in Darty. And there's plenty of reason to party, this is the first place I've reached over 200 miles from Penzance station, and look who's here to meet me for lunch! Had a really nice pit stop with the family, thanks mum and dad:). Dartmouth is also a lovely place, plenty of naval history and supposedly the port from which crusaders sailed to reclaim the holy land!Lue lisää

As soon as I waved off my parents, I met a really wholesome local elderly couple waiting for the ferry who were going off to get drunk in Kingswear. The other side of the ferry even they then waved me off! The path from there took plenty of ups and downs I'd describe as 'fun' but maybe they just caught me in a good mood. I met a real lad called Kieran hiking the whole path in the other direction and we sat on a bench and spoke for a good while. Then I dashed around Berry Head and I've arrived late in Brixham, which so far seems alright, definitely less horrible than Plymouth.Lue lisää

MatkaajaA very fair assessment of Brixham. Paignton spoons has little to offer other than damp, but the Green Ginger in TQ is pretty and has an outdoor balcony seating area (if you were to fancy a morning pint that is)

I *forgot* to mark this last night, by which I mean decided not to until this morning. But I was camped on a golf course technically on the edge of a wooded area. I had been loitering at Churston cove for a while; people had clearly camped there before but left lots of rubbish and I didn't particularly want the blame, so this was the next best bet. Absolutely the dodgiest pitch for sure so far though. Regardless, no-one knew I was ever there as it's an early morning start today. Also it was too dark to even take a tent pic so enjoy Brixham pics on a beautiful evening instead.

Edit: and a pic in the morning where I immediately discovered this ideal place to camp like 5 minutes away.🤦‍♂️

Yesterday was also the day I reached halfway to a million steps, could be tight trying to reach the full mill though😬
