Billy the Kid

One of the Wild West's most infamous criminals, William H Bonny (Billy the Kid) was shot and killed here in Fort Sumner. This is his grave along with two of his gang.

His gravestone has been stolen twice, once in 1951, where it was missing for 26 years before being found again in Texas, and then again in 1981, found 4 days later in California. So now it's in a cage.

Never closed for a minute in 90 years

Today has been constant driving to get back to Arizona. We've only made Roadside stops really. One of those was Clines Corners.

Clines Corner in New Mexico first opened its gas station and store in 1934. It's been open 24 hours, 7 days a week, ever since. It was originally on Route 66, which has since become the I40 on this stretch.

I've a feeling the cars were much cooler when it first opened.Read more

The car seems fine. He's been driving it about an hour. James is going to head south east now to San Angelo, his home for the next 10 weeks. 😢

I'm going back to New Mexico and then North and home that way. It's going to be a very different trip without James.Read more

Getting to have one of my favorite Navajo snacks, their delicious fry bread. One savory and one sweet. The perfect lunch.

I also stocked up with more blue cornflour to make my favorite tacos.

A recreation of the main post gate that Oppenheimer and his team would pass each time they entered the facility to work on the Manhattan project.

I have had the oportunity to visit both Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 2019. So strange to now be visiting the place where both those bombs were created.

Just arrived and it's getting dark already. Need to think about where I will be camping.Read more

Oppenheimer and Groves before they looked like Cillian Murphy and Matt Damon.

Della really doesn't like bronze statutes. She did not want to go near them.

The statues are standing in front of the Fuller Lodge, built in 1928, and used as a school until it was purchased by the Manhattan Project in 1942.Read more

The house at Otowi Bridge

This unassuming abandoned home has been a train station, a post office and a restaurant among other things in its time. The last resident, Edith Warner was hired here to manage the train station and remained after the station closed to open a shop, tea room and restaurant. Oppenheimer had a standing reservation here during the Manhattan Project, when he chose to dine at places other than the lodge.Read more

Taking sports too seriously?

At the end of the day, it's just a game. That's why I kind of like the Los Alamos' Pierotti Clowns. They formed in 1953 when Los Alamos was still surrounded by security fencing and army checkpoints, and was a very serious town indeed. Launched by two brothers who owned the local soda fountain, the Pierotti's.

The team were famous for playing with just 5 players on 9 player leagues, and of course being dressed as clowns, including face paint. Despite their comedic appearance, they won 177 of their 202 games over the 25 years that they played.

They also appeared in the first edition of Sports Illustrated in 1954 (incorporated into the mural).

So yes this is a mural, celebrating the team, in downtown Los Alamos. Della is too serious for this kind of thing.Read more

Such an astonishing sight! That's part of the Rockies behind, and the mountain of sand that has blown against them are the dunes. I actually drove through a sandstorm on the way in. Truly remarkable to see snow and sand dunes in one Vista.Read more

I got a flat tyre and had to change it. Now I only have a compact spare, so this will limit my speed to 55 mph all the way home. No way to get the tyre repaired as tomorrow is Sunday and Monday is a holiday.Read more

Morning Coffee in Colorado

We arrived in Durango after dark and left before daylight, so we've stopped off in the San Juan forest at first light to brew some coffee and to give Della a little run around. And of course in the hope of seeing a bear.

We're at high altitude and it's nice and windy. I have my hoodie on. I love weather like this.Read more

Hoping to get my tire repaired

Most places are closed on Memorial day, but I've been told this one will be open at 8am. A guy from Colorado was told the same. We are both waiting.

We've now learned it won't open. I'm driving over to another place and he is trying a different one.

I didn't cook at camp as I wanted to get the tire fixed early. Since only half of that happened, I decided to grab some breakfast here for old times sake. The gravy is still every bit as good as I remembered.Read more

Area 66

It's called Area 66, (a mash-up between the famous Area 51 and the famous road Route 66 that it's on).

The golf ball was originally a realtor's office, but they all ended up in prison for selling property that didn't exist. It was purchased and repurposed into a UFO museum and diner.

Like so many things, it suffered during the government lockdowns and now it's closed.Read more
