Cologne Cathedral is one of Europe’s most famous cathedrals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the Gothic style, it impresses with its twin spires that rise 157 meters into the sky. Construction began in 1248 and was completed only in 1880. Inside, visitors find stunning stained glass windows, the Shrine of the Three Kings, and ornate altars. The cathedral is an important pilgrimage site and attracts millions of tourists each year. From the top of the tower, there is a spectacular view over Cologne and the Rhine. Over the centuries, it also served as a cultural and religious center. Guided tours and a climb up the south tower are possible. In the evening, the illuminated façade is particularly majestic.

🚢Lightship Borkumriff

The lightship Borkumriff was commissioned in 1913 and served as a floating lighthouse in the North Sea. It marked the dangerous Borkum Reef and guided ships safely past the shoals. For decades, it was an important part of maritime traffic. After decommissioning, it was preserved as a museum ship. Today it lies in the harbor of Borkum and can be visited. Visitors learn a lot about life on board, the technology, and the history of North Sea shipping. Cabins, the engine room, and navigation equipment are still intact. The ship gives a good impression of the harsh life at sea. It is a popular destination for families and history enthusiasts. The lightship symbolizes the maritime tradition of the region.

🗼New Lighthouse

The New Lighthouse was built in 1879 and stands 60 meters tall. It replaced an older lighthouse and still serves as a navigation aid. The tower is red and white striped and a distinctive landmark of the island. Visitors can climb the tower to the observation platform. From there, there is an impressive view over the island, dunes, the North Sea, and sometimes the mainland. Inside, there is a small exhibition on the history of Borkum lighthouses. The climb up the spiral staircase is a special experience. Historical documents and photos show the construction and use of the tower. It is a popular photo spot and orientation point. It symbolizes the connection between humans, technology, and the sea.

The seal sandbank “Hohes Riff” lies off the coast of Borkum and is an important resting and living area for harbor seals. At low tide, parts of the sandbank are exposed, providing ideal sunbathing and resting spots for the seals. Visitors can observe the animals in their natural environment by boat or ship. Especially in summer, many pups can be seen. Observation is done carefully to avoid disturbing the animals. The sandbank is part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and is protected. Rangers and nature guides sometimes offer tours. It is a fascinating experience to see seals in the wild. Photographers and nature enthusiasts take the opportunity for unique shots. The sandbank symbolizes the diversity and beauty of the North Sea.
