  • Had a Date with an Angel

    March 26, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Long trips on a motorcycle are wonderful, but can also be quite stressful. No, let me put it differently, very stressful. With the uncooperative weather, all the changes in planning, my mother possibly suffering a very mild stroke, which kept her in the hospital overnight, and problems with her nursing staff in Germany, my nerves were very raw. I was exhausted and had to leave the restaurant to collect myself.

When I first came into the restaurant, I had noticed a mother and daughter having lunch and it seemed they were in a similar moment of time as my mom and I are in; that is, accompanying our mothers through the long goodbye.

As Haukur and I were leaving, the daughter took my hand and said, "I don't know what's going on, but I want to tell you that everything is going to be okay."

  • Douglas Food Trucks

    March 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

There are two food trucks in Castro Park. We tried then both. Takos Fuentes on the east side was very good and plentiful. If you visit, tell Robert hello from us.

    March 27, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Truck driver headed towards Chihuahua asked if we were going that way as well. If so, he offered to let the cartels know so that we would get easy passage through.

Haukur thanked him, but said, "No, we are headed towards Hermosillo."

Note to self: Don't give shady characters your travel plans. Especially not when you are riding on a brand-new $35,000 motorcycle including full gear and you don't have any doors to lock.

Taken some time between leaving Douglas, Arizona and arriving in Hermosillo, Mexico. Hey. It's a long trip. Shadow photos give me something to do. 😆

  • Destination in Sight

    March 27, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, is an elegant, modern city. We loved the look and feel of our motel with its inner patio-style swimming pool and were delighted with the city and Parque La Ruina, an upscale food truck park that offers live music and some of the best BBQ outside Texas. It really will keep you up at night, dreaming of a getting another slice of that juicy, exquisite BBQ.

  • Jicama

    March 28, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Picking up some provisions for the day, I stumbled upon a vegetable I hadn't seen before. I imagine it must be similar to kohlrabi. I'll let you know one I've tried it.

Here's a description from Spruce Eats:

"Jicama is a crunchy root that's native to Mexico where the food also goes by the names yam bean, Mexican turnip, and Mexican potato. But unlike many other root vegetables, jicama has a snap to it and a juiciness that's refreshing, not starchy. Jicama also differs from other similar foods insofar is that jicama tastes delicious when peeled and eaten raw."

  • Navojoa

    March 28, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

It was a 10-hour drive from Hermosillo to Topolobampo to catch the ferry. How blessed we were to stumble on a jewel of restaurant for our mid-day break.

Serene, charming and great food, the owner's husband, a motorcyclist and multi-tasker, called his 2-wheeler friends to come over and take a look at our new bike, while at the same time video calling his GS compadre.

  • Topolobampo

    March 28, 2023 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Color is the order of the day in Topolobampo. If it can be painted, it will be. Stucco, rotted wood, piecemeal corrugated metal ... all thickly painted in primary colors. We took a quick motorcycle tour around the small town before heading for the ferry to La Paz, Baja California.Read more

  • Where's Haukur?!

    March 29, 2023, Gulf of California ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I lost sight off Haukur for several hours. Finally, around 1:00 a.m. he showed up at his seat.

It seems that for the last 2 hours, Haukur had been standing at the ready to move the bike into the hold. In doing so, the motorcycle battery went dead, which he realised immediately when they finally told him he could move the bike into the hold. Not able to start the bike, he had to push the motorcycle up the ramp with no help from the motor nor crew members. Three or four trucks closed him into the niche where our motorcycle was. He was trapped in the hold.

Haukur finished battening down the bike and used his booster power bank to charge the motorcycle's battery then began to maneuver his way through the hold, crawling over, under and around the trucks until he found a window where someone finally saw him.

If you have ever watched a ship being loaded, then you know it is chaotic at best. Thank God, everything worked out in the end. 🙏🏻

NOTE: You'll need to have 4 straps with you to tie down your bikes.
