Visiting the 12 Apostles

The 12 Apostles was completely worth the 9 hours of driving yesterday! I got in lots of left lane driving...and discovered that the Australian roundabouts are terrifying when you are both trying to figure out where you're going AND have to figure out where to exit it...on the left. Made it here safely after a very long day of adventuring yesterday on the Great Ocean Road. Took probably the most appreciated shower of my life here at the airport, grabbing breakfast and then off to pick up the camper van. Vroom vroom!En savoir plus

Glenorchy!! One of the most beautiful drives in the world...and, for you fellow LOTR fans...location for a good chunk of the filming. The road is narrow, winding and in parts 1 lane (meaning that there really is only 1 lane for both ways of traffic)...and takes you through some of the most gorgeous views ever. Love!!!En savoir plus

After the road to Glenorchy, the girls went off canyoning and I explored Queenstown. The views from the top of the gondola run are fantastic...and lots of trails to explore. Note to self: when curiousity has you follow the paragliding signs to the launch point, remember that it's very high and the hike very steep. Whew.En savoir plus

Mt Aspiring National Park, New Zealand

We had a busy day exploring Mt Aspiring National Park! So much water here. Everywhere you look, there are water falls cascading down mountain sides (lots of those too!) or gorgeous lakes. Today we drove through rain, snow, more rain, hail, even more rain, crossed two mountain passes, drove from the mountains to the sea...and ended up near a glacier (Fox Glacier). There are glow worms in the vicinity, which Lexi and I are both dying to see...but after being wet and cold most of the day, we're in for the night. Tomorrow is glacier day...both Fox and Franz Josef...then maybe glow worms tomorrow night. Goodnight peeps!En savoir plus

Glacierland! We started by hiking up to view Fox Glacier close up...in the pouring rain, but we were determined! The time was worth it, although the last 400 metres felt straight up...whew! Luckily, we weren't carried away by flash floods along the way.En savoir plus

VoyageurIt's actually not far...a little less than a mile in total. Just steep at the end, with "no stopping (due to rock falls) the last 400 meters.

This was one of my favorite stops on an awesome adventure-filled day. We hiked 1.5 miles to an old mining dredge from the 30's and then on to an old mining tunnel that looked out over the Tasmin Sea. Love!En savoir plus

Franz Josef glacier is definitely striking. We elected to view it from farther out as we weren't feeling up to a 6 hour hike up get as close as possible. We also found the tipping point between sheep and cows...cows are now the roadside entertainment!En savoir plus

We spent the night in Hokitika, a very cool little beach town! Started off the morning with a walk on the gorgeous beach, complete with Whitebait fisherwomen. Whitebait is famous here...primarily made into patties. I got to see some freshly netted - think tiny, white eels with big eyes and you get the picture.

Next stop was the awe-inspiring Hokitika Gorge. I could have spent hours perched on my rock by the turquoise blue river.En savoir plus

Pancake Rocks Blowholes....rocked!! The striations on the rocks were fascinating and we had fun trying to time the pics for the blow holes. I took about a million pictures...here are a few of my favs.

Penguin hunting stop just north of Pancake Rocks Blowholes. No penguins, but the surf was awesome and led to the next adventure...accidental wave surfing. So I got a little soaked by a huge, surprise wave...it was fun and worth the wet clothes, shoes, bruises and scrapes. I'd do it again (but maybe get off the rocks a little sooner next time).En savoir plus
