Let the road trip bubble commence! Our fearless heroine decided to start this one off with a stay in a beloved place - The Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, WA. Bread pudding, amazing food, a room with a lovely balcony view and relaxing bird song to set the right tone for the upcoming adventure. Off to Craters of the Moon tomorrow!Read more

Day 1: Shoshone Falls ...or not?

Carter, Sorren and I headed off on the big cross-country adventure! Stop 1 was to be Shoshone Falls...which turned into an unexpected adventure complete with wrong Google maps directions, a somewhat terrifying drive down a very steep one lane/2 way track with steep dropoffs and no guards rails ...and not able to see if cars are coming up (or down). We never made it to the falls but it was an interesting experience.

We DID get to see the Bridge of the Gods along the way which was a nice bonus - especially to a reader of "Wild".Read more

Day 2: Craters of the Moon!

This was truly an awe-inspiring place. One can truly imagine being on an otherworldly plane as you walk amongst the volcanic rock and sand. Thank you for the recommendation, Cheryl!

Oh yes... And I stopped at Wildhorse casino along the way just for fun...and hit a $120 win. It was an amazing day.

And Carter got to go off-road. I took the VERY off the beaten path route to get to the highway. Poor thing really needed a bath after 15 miles of dirt/gravel road.Read more

Day 5: Drive, drive, drive

Driving day to KC, MO... This part is all about hitting the last few states in the middle that I haven't visited it (or at least poked my tires into).

The Blue Moon was a waypoint to make sure Carter and I hit Iowa but it was an interesting jaunt!Read more

Day 6: Devils, Whales & Hot Springs

Today was another driving day with a fun stop at a casino on the way (the little Hot Stuff devils sent me away with $100!), a quick jaunt to historic OK Route 66 with the famous (ok really not) Blue Whale of Catoosa roadside attraction (super cute!) and then on to the historic Hotel Hale at Hot Springs National Park.

The hotel has the hot springs piped into huge soaking tubs in each room. What a lovely splurge for me!Read more

Day 8: Caves & Bats...yay!

Mammoth Cave National Park!

Had a wonderful time tramping around a miniscule part of the cave system on the Historic Tour. This tour is a bit over 2 miles, includes 550+ steps, some bats, caverns so narrow you have to go sideways and others you have to duck walk through. It was a blast!

The historic cabin I'm staying in is adorable and perfect for my needs. Oh yes...and tried Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Pie today. I'm a fan!

It's just after 7 pm CT and I'm tucked in bed reading. Up early tomorrow for the final push home. It's going to be a very long driving day but will be worth it to get there tomorrow.
