  • Tampa Bay H3 #1125

    February 20, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

What an awesome shiggy trail from Cha Cha and Sherriff out in New Tampa (that's easier to say than Thonotosassa 😂😂😂). It seemed to take forever to get things going, as hashers were straggling into the start right up until go time. Then Peterfile, who was stand in RA, just wanted to keep on rambling. Just when we thought we were out, Taint says why don't we introduce everyone (all 30 of us) . . . and 10 minutes later, after all sorts of end of run circle shit goes down, we were FINALLY on out. Runner's trail (as you can see from the map) crisscrossed all over the shiggified world, eventually passing by a shot stop, and then a beer stop (where we encountered the walkers . . . and a bit of a circle jerk), but not to be deterred, we ventured on towards the finish, capped with a couple small water crossings, then back up onto the berm, where trail just sort of petered out about a mile from the finish, with a cheerful ON IN posted. I was leading the pack in a non-competitive sort of way at this point, but as I meandered off into the woods looking for trail, 2 Rung, Blue Oyster C*nt, and Fluffer all managed to put me in my place as I dragged in behind them. It would be a good 35-40 more minutes before the rest of the pack staggered in, along with the auto-hashers who never left the parking lot. We did manage to get a very interesting and fun circle in before the sun set, and the park closed on us. We had a very respectable turn out for the On After at Uncle Fats Tavern, with plenty more laughing and foolishness. A most excellent day on the TBH3, and an excellent shiggy trail.Read more

  • Closing one Chapter, opening a New One

    February 21, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Wow, it has been 10 months since I was minding my own damn business in Bahrain . . . that I had to fly back to the USA due to COVID . . . (since then I was forced to run 118 hash trails with 18 different hash clubs . . . 5 months in Hawaii, a month of bopping around NY, NJ, MD, DC, and VA, then 4 months down in Florida), I am finally ON OUT to a new adventure. Next stop Ecuador.Read more

  • On On to Cuenca, Ecuador

    February 23, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

On my way to South America for the first time. After flying from Tampa (via Houston), I have arrived in Quito. No issues with the flight so far, until hitting immigration, where the computers were not working. The whole plane load of us had to wait about 30 minutes, but immigration was simple, and I'm in. Now for one domestic flight to Cuenca.Read more

  • Exploring Cuenca

    February 24, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Another great day wandering around Cuenca. When you are in a city that is 8500 feet high, what to do . . . hike 6 miles and climb to the top of a local mountain for a better view. 🙂 Plus, if you have seen the news, there was a gang war in the prison system yesterday with 50 prisoners killed, 38 of them here in Cuenca . . . so we walked up there to see it. Living the Thug Life here in SA. 🤣

  • Working on my PhhhD

    February 25, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Had brunch with some hashers today, and made a comment about tracking down some of the old Quito hashers to see about getting some background. 30 minutes later, I was chatting with Tony "Upchuck" Lloyd who hashed in Quito 25 years ago. Got some good info, and he is going to put me in touch with some of the hashers from the mid 80s when the Quito H3 was founded. This has been another great day.Read more

  • Parque El Paraíso

    February 26, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Feeling better now after a 24 hour disruption to my digestive system (I think you know what I mean). Went out for a stroll around this lovely city. You can fly the trail and see some cool pictures . . . seems I am always scouting trail. :) And added a few more pictures here.

  • Cuenca Alpaca's H3 #18

    February 27, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well, I finally hashed in South America. This has rounded out my hash travels to 6 continents (7 if you count Zealandia), and this being the 94th country. We had a pack of about 25 turn up, mostly walkers but a few runners. Trail had its issues, but for virgin hares, it was wonderful. The trail was so nice (4 Kms) . . . I did it TWICE (8 Kms). On On.

  • Walking back to the hostal

    March 2, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Normally when we travel, we try to cram as much into the time we have . . . good thing about being retired, I can relax and just take it in as it comes at me. I have been out running or walking at least 5 miles a day, all over the city seeing things. Today's attempt to see the Incan Temple of Ingapirca was a bust, it is not open. So wandered into city center for a nice lunch, and stroll back to my hostal. Got some nice photos . . . have a look.

  • On Down to the Beach

    March 4, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

After a week and a half of the high country of Quenca, it is time to get back to sea level at the beach. My friends B-Flat and Victoria have a place in Playas, and they encouraged me to bring some hashers down for the weekend to run a trail. I was able to wrangle 4 to come along. We had a fairly uneventful (except for the landslides) 6 hour bus trip up through the Cajas National Park. Woke up in the morning to the news that with all the rain, had created several landslides on the mountain pass, along with some election protests, and the road was blocked. Undaunted, we went to the bus station anyway, figuring if the road was still blocked, the bus line would know and not give us tickets. Cuenca is at 8500 feet, and driving over the mountain, we hit 13,600 feet, and did see clean up crews working to remove dirt and rocks from the road. But we made it.Read more

  • Playas H3 Trail #3

    March 6, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Like the Olympics, the Playas H3 only runs once every four years. Good thing we just happened to be in town. Victoria made me hare with him and B-Flat, because he wanted to make sure to have someone to blame in case anything went wrong. Fortunately, it all worked out just fine. Street and Shiggy trail, ending on the beach. Robust pack of 9 on trail, and a few others joined us on the beach. A great day.

  • On My Way to Galapagos

    March 9, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Time to make a move. Next stop, Galapagos Islands . . . but first, I need to get a COVID PCR test, and meet my travel companion who is joining me for the next couple weeks.

The day started with about 12 hours of rain. I caught a cab to the bus station in Playas, and it was super easy. Arrived, bought my ticket, and boarded the bus in less than 5 minutes, and less than 5 minutes after that . . . we were on our way. The 90 minute bus ride was uneventful, and I decided to walk the mile or so to my hostal. Checked in, dropped my backpack, and set off to find a COVID PCR test. I had a lead on a place called InterLab, and after looking it up on Google Maps, I set off walking again to make what turned out to be a three mile hike. First place told me to go to another building, but that building was really meant to be the one across the street . . . so after asking a couple friendly people, I made my way up to the testing site. Within 15 minutes, I ordered a test, paid the $80, and got my test done. Was out the door, and walked back to the hostal. Overall, a very successful day's effort.Read more

  • An island, in the middle of the Pacific

    March 11, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

An early rise, and walk to the airport, began a series of checks and inquiries in order to get to the Galapagos Islands. There were about 5 checks of Covid tests, passport, and tickets, then the 2 hour flight was nothing. Landed on the small island of Baltra to the north, followed by a 10 minute bus ride to the ferry. A short ferry ride of about a quarter mile to the bigger island of Santa Cruz. Then jump in a taxi (truck) for the 30 minute ride to Puerto Agora. Then drop the bags at the hostal.Read more

  • Strolling out to German Beach

    March 16, 2021 in Ecuador ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After an early rise to be at the clinic for our COVID PCR, and finalizing tomorrow's boating trip, we went for a stroll out to German Beach, and las Grietas (a collapsed lava tube canyon). It turned out to be a somewhat short walk, but we did snorkel in las Grietas, and get a bit of the history. On the way back, we stopped off at the beach for a couple hours of sun. On the way back, we spent a few minutes with several sea lions on the pier. A fun day.Read more

  • Medellin H3 Trail #???

    March 20, 2021 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

A most excellent St Paddy's day hash today with the Medellin Hash House Harriers hared by Pablo Pisscobar (runners) and newly named PeePee Pies (walkers). It was an A to B trail that took in some good views of the city, and had one long ass uphill section. We had a robust pack of 12, with 5 of them virgins. I had an almost hare snare (first time since the operation), but Pablo was just too fast, and snuck by me be mere inches. Well done to the whole pack for a great day.

  • La Piedra (the Rock)

    March 23, 2021 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Made it to the top in less than 15 minutes . . . 650 stairs lead you through a narrow crack on the edge of the impressive La Piedra Del Penol, or ‘The Big Guatape Rock’. At the top of the Guatape rock, the view is quite simply breathtaking and has to be one of the most amazing lookouts in all of Colombia. At 2,135 meters above sea-level, this rock is a natural wonder and the perfect spot to enjoy panoramic views of Guatape Lake and this beautiful region.
