  • Larnaca H3 Trail #1764 - Cyprus

    24. februar 2020, Kypros ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

After messing around in Ayia Napa for a couple hours trying to find our accommodations for the night, we had to break away and head out to the hash. The directions were written for the local hashers who know their way around, but we made it just in time to change clothes and get the chalk talk. The trail was actually really good. Although at the start the hares explained that it had poured down rain this morning and washed away the marks. So we basically had a lead hare take us around the intended trail. No matter, was really good. We had lots of shiggy dodging all the water puddles, good conversation, and we ran past a private zoo that had kangaroos, camels, goats, horses, and all the assorted other animals. By the time the runners finished, the walking pack had already finished. There was some good food (due to a birthday) of fried chicken and sausage rolls. The circle was pretty much your standard read from the script affair (but still good fun), but as the sun was setting, it started to get really cold. We did not last long after that, and headed for the car . . . since we still needed to go out and find a hotel for the evening. The good news is, we found one close by, got checked in, ordered a pizza, and then got hot showers and warmed up. Sleep tonight will be amazing for sure. Tomorrow we drive back up towards the Turkish side, but will not have to cross the boarder.

  • Nicosia Horrible H3 Trail #1646

    25. februar 2020, Kypros ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

What an amazing time running with the Nicosia Horrible H3 here in Cyprus. We arrived a few minutes early, so I walked around to make sure we were in the right place, and found flour . . . so good to go. Start time was published as 7:15 PM meet up, with a 7:30 run time (so full trail in the dark of night). Eventually the pack turned up, and they explained to us that the other hash clubs were all expats, they were actually local people that ran the hash. It was an older pack, but we still had a runners and walkers trail, and I am happy to say that this was the first trail (in almost a year) that I was able to run the whole way. Guess the old ticker is back on track. Trail was actually pretty excellent, with good checks, and a long ass YBF for the runners trail. Anyway, once all the walkers had returned, we formed up on the street for circle, with the usual stuff. Then we were wined and dined by the hares in one of their homes, with all sorts of local delicacies. So many nice people, was an actual joy to meet and hash with them all. If you get to Cyprus, make sure to get up to Nicosia.

  • Dhekelia H3 Trail #2792

    26. februar 2020, Kypros ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We're in Cyprus, which way to the hash? Today, we got to run with the first hash club on Cyprus, founded on 30 Jan 1967. The grand old hash was founded before such things as the Jakarta Circle existed, so that tradition does not apply . . . so just a great trail, some jolly socializing, and a beer, then we were off into the night. Everyone was very friendly. Love hashing here on Cyprus. https://www.relive.cc/view/veqzD4P8VBOLes mer

  • Polygon H3 Trail #2078

    27. februar 2020, Kypros ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Not the most original trail (sort of a box you would expect from a new hare), but the pack was a lot of fun. We had a great time wrapping up four hash trails in four days here on Cyprus. This trail was up on the border, within sight of both the Turkish Cypriot (northern) and Greek (southern) outposts. The circle was fun until it got dark (and cold), so had to do another Irish Goodbye, and evacuate the scene. Overall, it was a great week on Cyprus. https://www.relive.cc/view/v36ArMByXGqLes mer

  • Parthenon - Cross it off the Bucket List

    29. februar 2020, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Visited one of my bucket list items today, by walking up the hill to the Parthenon and Acropolis of Athens. Was a cool but bright sunny day. We wandered around the flea market first, and visit some attractions, and then found a lovely little bistro for lunch. Had the most amazing traditional Greek Salad (with a beer of course), then made our way up to the Parthenon. Awesome pile of stacked marble, under reconstruction for the past 200 years. Had great views of Athens from the hilltop. On the way back down we stopped for another beer, because all that climbing builds up a thirst, and I realized how much I love both Greek and Turkish food. Can't wait for dinner.Les mer

  • Athens H3 Trail #2110ish

    1. mars 2020, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Having crossed off the Parthenon from my bucket list yesterday, today it was time to cross the Athens H3 off another list. Meet time was 11:00 am, and we had about a 45 minute drive to get there (so off we went). Athens is a pretty big city, and crowded downtown where we are staying. But the farther north we went, the quieter the streets got, until we arrived and there was not a soul on the streets. Wondering if we were in the right place, we waited tentatively. But the pack soon arrived, and the hash was on. The hare had set two trails (runners and walkers), and explained for the runners, that the flour was white on the streets, but used blue on the dirt trails. We took off in a pack of 6 runners, and soon found our way to the shiggy. Trail was excellent, with plenty of dirt tracks and false trails, and we eventually popped out in the back end of a neighborhood, and back into the park. Circle was in a mini amphitheater, and started with a bottle of Ouzo. The walkers eventually rolled in, and the festivities began. After a fun circle, we all wandered across the street into a lovely little neighborhood restaurant for some Greek delights. A great day of hashing with the Athens H3. https://www.relive.cc/view/vYvE9PK1GwvLes mer

Today is a holiday in Greece, its Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera) it’s the first day of Great Lent in the Eastern Orthodox Church. We made the most of it, by walking over to the Acropolis Museum. Pretty cool, as it is built inside to recreate the original. Lots of remnants of the structure on display. • The Birthplace of Democracy - The Pnyx

    3. mars 2020, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The Word Democracy comes from the Greek Words Demos (People) Kratos (Power) People Power, Demokratia = Democracy.

Went for a wander around the city yesterday, just to see the many ruins in Athens. First stop after lunch was Filopappou Hill, which for you history buffs is considered the birthplace of Democracy. With a great view of the Acropolis, this area had several prominent sites, including The Pnyx. Beginning as early as 507 BC, the Athenians gathered on the Pnyx to host their popular assemblies, thus making the hill one of the earliest and most important sites in the creation of democracy.Les mer

Croatia, or rather Hrvatska as it is pronounced in Croatian, was once part of the former Yugoslavia. Declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, along with Slovenia, resulted in a period of unrest and 4 years of war in the region. Since 1995, Hrvatska has seen many years of economic growth and peace, and today is a thriving and peaceful country. This is as far north as this trip will take us. • Anybody Seen a Pyramid Around Here?

    10. mars 2020, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We were on the redeye out of Athens, departing at just about midnight for a 95 minute flight to Cairo. Made it in with no issues, got medically screened (no COVID-19 on us), got our Visa On Arrival (US $25), and headed for the door. Quick stop at the ATM for some local cash, and off we go. As we head towards the door, dude pulls out a price brochure, and offers us a ride to town for 350 Egyptian Pounds (~US $22). City of Cairo is wild. Lots of highways, but no one appeared to notice the lines painted for lanes. Cars were all over the place at random. Drive to the hotel took about 30-40 minutes, everything looks weird at 3 am. We pull up in front of the hotel, on a side street, and the front desk is there waiting for us (got an email while waiting in Athens, asking when we would arrive). We get all signed in, and they show us to our room. It is huge, basically an apartment in a residence hotel. Pretty much went right to sleep as it was nearly 4 am by this time, but woke up to banging and pounding at 8 am. Seems they are remodeling the other apartments on this floor. I eventually got out of bed and looked out the window . . . looks a lot different in the light of day. We have a kitchen, so went to the store to get some food. Short walk around the corner (about 300 meters) to a local grocery store. Well stocked, but chaos. Narrow isles, with people bouncing around everywhere. We grabbed enough for 2-3 days, and headed back to hang out and relax. Tomorrow we will head out to see the Pyramids and other attractions. Life is good.Les mer

  • Pyramids of Giza - Bucket List Item #2

    11. mars 2020, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Totally surreal, visited (and crossed off) another bucket list item here in Cairo. The Pyramids of Giza. After checking all the websites for tours, and getting the run around, we spoke to the front desk at the hotel. They set one up for us for 2000 Egyptian Pounds (US $130) for an 8 hour trip. After we paid, they called back and said that the entrance fee was not included and we would need to pay that at the site. Then they said it was really only about 120 Pounds, no big deal. So next question for them was, so what is the 2000 Pounds we paid for . . . answer, transpiration. So knowing that the Pyramids were only about 10 miles away, we canceled. We decided to just grab a cab and go on our own. Long story short, for less than 1000 Pounds, we taxied there and back, paid the 200 Pounds (each) entrance fee, and even got conned for US $10 (damn I hate when that happens), and still completed the whole visit for less than 1000 Pounds. Sweet.Les mer

  • Cancelled - COVID 19 has finally spoken

  • Cairo H3 Trail #2089

    13. mars 2020, Egypt ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

After the biblical rains yesterday of over 3 inches (normal annual rainfall in Cairo is 1 inch), the city was pretty flooded. There were reports that parts of the city had their water turned off to alleviate the flow on the sewer system. Anyway, the hash did NOT cancel. Since the area the trail was planned for was pretty well washed out, the hash was adjusted to a city trail to ensure all could participate. So nearly 30 hashers turned up for all the fun. We had circle aside the roof top pool, despite the fact that it was only 60 degrees F out, and it was raining off and on. All good fun, then we went back to the start (most always they meet at the Ace Club in Maadi, at 1300 on Friday) and had a couple beers in the Ace Club and sang many hash songs. What a great time. Hope to get back to Cairo again. https://www.relive.cc/view/v4OGmPzro5qLes mer

  • The past 24 hours has been pretty wild

    15. mars 2020, Bahrain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This time yesterday, we were jumping in the taxi at our hotel in Ma'Adi (Cairo), and headed for the airport. There were very few cars on the streets at 6 am, plus the fact that many roads were flooded. The taxi had to go through no less than 5 water pools in the road on the way. Jo was flying back home to the US (JFK), where her folks were picking her up (she made it safe and sound by the way). My return flight from Jordan was cancelled, so the whole trip to see Petra was cancelled. I quickly booked a flight to the next scheduled locations, which was Bahrain. Jo's flight was at 9:30 am (mine was at 1:50 PM). So we rode in together, and I planned to hang out at the airport. Jo goes in fine, I get told to wait outside (in the building, but in the front area) until 8. I tried again at 8, they said come back at 9. I came back at 9, they said come back at 11. I finally get in at 1030, after sitting for 4 hours with almost nothing to do as their was no free WiFi at the airport. The remaining 3 hour wait went quickly after I bought some WiFi on the inside, and drank a couple beers. The flight to Bahrain was uneventful, and less than 3 hours, super easy. Upon arrival, we were directed to a bus that took us to a fenced in compound . . . a makeshift medical screening facility. We go in, get issued masks, and told to fill out a medical form. We then lined up for an evaluation, nose swab, details, etc., and we sign forms that we will be quarantined for 14 days in home. We then watched the staff come back out from the screening area shouting names through their masks, to get people to sign their forms. I was first to get done, and the only American, so was easy for me. All the others spread out in the waiting area, so they staff had to walk all over the room until they found each individual. Once that was complete, they sent our tests to the lab for analysis. While waiting (at about 8:30 PM) the staff finally realizes we are not getting out anytime soon, so they bring in airline food for everyone. The usual chicken or beef options, and the rest of the tray. By 9:30 PM, the air conditioners are working overtime, and the whole facility is getting pretty cold. So seeing everyone shivering, I asked the staff if they can turn down the AC . . . 15 minutes later they bring in a bunch of blankets. We have been in the process for 4 hours at this point, with almost no information on what is going on. Finally, at about 4 am, we get the word that all tested NEGATIVE, and we were ready to complete the immigration process. That takes another hour, and we finally get the word that 14 day quarantine was not required. We are free to enjoy life from outside a locked room (I don't think I could stand going to prison, holy hell). Here I am now, in Bahrain, and ready for the hash tomorrow, and the INTERGULF hash event next weekend. So will be here at least a week . . . but then what? Time will tell.Les mer

Then we had 5 days on Cyprus, followed by a week in Athens, Greece to see the Acropolis / Parthenon, and then 4 days in Zagreb, Croatia. Finally 5 days in Cairo, Egypt to see the Pyramids. Now in Bahrain, where I got tested (results = Negative) for COVID-19 upon arrival. Not sure what is next, playing it by ear.Les mer

  • Bahrain H3 Trail #2550

    16. mars 2020, Bahrain ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

A rolling stone gathers no moss . . . so this rolling stone keeps on hashing. I had the opportunity to join the Bahrain H3 for their weekly evening hash tonight. This time of year, it is dark for the whole trail, but being mostly a street run there was plenty of lights. It was the annual St. Paddy's day hash, and the pack dressed in their best (yea, right) green attire. Trail was pretty much a street run, but the circle was a rousing good time with plenty of hash songs and cheer. A solid pack of 25+ enjoyed this gaggle of brilliant jokes, songs, and even came with a pot of Irish stew. Ok, maybe it was just boiled potatoes with some beef cubes, but it was surely tasty to the half drunken pack after an hour circle. This was the final local hash before the hoard of visitors (or maybe the one dude that got in) roll in for INTERGULF this weekend. And FUN, FUN I tell you, was had by all. https://www.relive.cc/view/vNOPn5WP3YqLes mer

  • Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits

    18. mars 2020, Bahrain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Since my world travel has been temporarily curtailed due to COVID-19, I will not have any Wonders of the World photos, or World Heritage Sites to describe for some time. What I can report from this vagabond lifestyle is that sometimes you just don't have convenient access to things like laundry and haircuts.

Over the past five months, this has created some very entertaining stories of spending 6 hours with the hotel staff in the Solomon Islands trying to keep the washing machine working. Or walking 15 minutes to a shop in Cairo, with a promise to pick up the next morning, only to return to the shop being closed. Calling the number the man provided, he made up several stories about he meant it was going to be three days, not one, or the power was out, etc etc. So these concerns make you really consider how long you are going to wear clothes, and "if its really dirty." :o)

Now haircuts are different, getting one or not, does not make such a big deal, since you can wash your hair everyday. But recently I went 10 weeks without a haircut . . . the longest between haircuts since 1981, before I went to boot camp. Over my 31 year career in the Marines, I estimate I got over 1500 haircuts, even including time in combat environments.

Even after I retired, I religiously scored a haircut every 2 weeks (cutting my annual haircut budget in half :) ). So 10 weeks was starting to freak me out, I hate hair on my neck now. Plus, it made me look old as hell. Also, conserving razor blades, I would normally only shave once a week or so. Yesterday I looked like I was 75, but with a haircut yesterday, and a clean shave today, I look like my normal 35 again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Life is good, and how was your day?

  • INTERGULF 2020 Main Event

    20. mars 2020, Bahrain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Just two weeks ago 40 International, and over 60 total hashers were signed up to attend INTERGULF 2020 in Bahrain. Then the bottom fell out last weekend, and COVID-19 curtailed all travel. Only one of those 40 made it into country before the travel restrictions kicked in (yea, that would be me). Due to ever increasing restriction, the Thursday evening pub crawl was cancelled, and only 11 hashers turned up today for the main event trail out in the desert. One hare (Saigon Sally - who set an amazing trail) and two hounds took to the hills for the runners trail, and one hare and seven walkers set out to beat the runners back into the finish. The walkers achieved their goal finishing in under an hour, as the runners popped up over the final dune about 20 minutes later, just as dark was settling over the site. Keeping our social distance, we conducted a circle and even managed to name one hasher . . . SLITHER. I'll save the naming details for another time. Great day of minimum 2 meters between hashers, and fun . . . FUN I tell you, was had by all. https://www.relive.cc/view/vKv24KZDr46Les mer
