      Amalfi - Positano - Sorrento

      May 23 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We could write a travel book on our experiences with Italian public transport! It's intriguing to say the least! There's a system, sort of ... People run around trying to find where to buy tickets and, as happened this morning, there was only one man selling bus tickets and he was sitting on a stone wall with no sign to say he was the ticket seller!
We got our tickets by pure chance and boarded the bus to Sorrento. We had 2 1/4 hrs of white knuckles and being totally absorbed by the exploits of the bus drivers and all of the other motorists weaving in and around each other!
We disembarked at Sorrento and found a delightful restaurant to have one of the best meals we've had since arriving in Europe (and reasonably priced too!)
Back to the bus station for a 40 min wait for the return trip to Amalfi. Once again, people were herded into the bus like sheep and told to 'move back'. It was total entertainment. We were pleased to be seated each way - it would have been a nightmare otherwise!
We enjoyed another meal on the rooftop of the Hotel away from the crowds and in the peace and quiet - bliss!
We are packed ready for our ferry ride and 2 x train trips where we will end up in Caserta for 1 night.
We've had a wonderful 3 days in Amalfi but we are keen to get back on the bikes in the Puglia region this Sunday.

      The Amalfi Coast

      August 31, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

‘This could end up being an expensive little trip out to see the Amalfi coast’ whispers Ronan as he winds down the window of our rental car.
The policeman informs us that we had driven through a red traffic light a while back. He is cross and exasperated, ‘You don’t even stop when you hear my siren?, Why?’
We apologise profusely and explain that we hadn’t noticed the traffic light. We go on to say that when we heard the siren we supposed it was for someone else. We are surprised when he is satisfied with this and lets us off, we can’t believe our luck. As we continue snaking around the narrow cliff road we keep an eye out for traffic lights and cop cars.

The driving is slow with lots of hairpin bends and oncoming traffic, I never go beyond third gear. Around ever blind corner there are incredible mountain views and beyond ever drop off there are spectacular sea views. Houses and hotels grip on to sides of cliffs above us and below us.
We stop an hour out the coast road; we have already had a big day in Pompeii. This is far enough for us to get a feel for driving the Amalfi coast. We picnic on roasted corn and chocolate crepes from the promenade stalls in Minori and then wind our way back to Régal in Solerno.
In two days time we will sail past here hugging the coast so we can savour the stunning views from the water.

Regatta wieder gut durchkreuzt, 😂, hautnah mittendrin. Spannend.

Ankern vor Positano, einem wunderschönen Ort.

      Arienzo Beach Club!

      July 6, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today ended up largely organized around a beach club. I mentioned one of these a few days ago when we had dinner, but they are essentially clubs where you pay for access to the beach, and they give you chairs, umbrellas, towels, and have a restaurant and staff on site. We went to Arienzo Beach Club just south of Positano; it’s a little out of the way and pricier, but we were going to do a hike first (which we bailed on; too hot and too long a hike), and it’s an actual beach as opposed to a dock on the water (like where we had dinner). Beautiful little spot, right next to a cliff to offer some shade in the water, which is amazingly clear and refreshing as it’s HOT. Zoom in on some of the pics from today and yesterday and look for the orange and white umbrellas; you can see it from a distance “Where’s Waldo?” style if you look.

Typically you’d take a boat from Sorrento to Positano (and then the beach club has a water taxi from Positano to the beach club), but we already had a car ordered to drop us off (originally planned to bring us to the start of the hike). Actually ended up very happy to get the ride instead. The views from the mountain tops were gorgeous, and it was interesting to look down on the water and towns that we were looking up at from the boat yesterday. Our driver went into full tour guide mode; he stopped at a few picturesque areas, took our pictures, and described the area. Best unexpected benefit in a while.

Lunch was decent, nothing too special. Pasta, octopus, meatballs, calamari, fried shrimp. Turns out you can eat shrimp whole if it’s fried, and I’m still not a huge fan. Dave and I had a healthy debate about the price elasticity and what the club should charge for a Clase Azul Margarita in order to make the most money.

When you spend all day in the hot Sun at a beach club, you get gelato twice. It’s just a rule. So in Positano, on the way back to Sorrento, we found the gelateria that required the least amount of stairs to climb. I splurged for the brioche con gelato, which is a fancy Italian ice cream sandwich on a brioche bun. Apparently it’s a breakfast in Sicily. I wouldn’t complain if I saw one show up at any meal.

Credit to Dave for finding a random pizza joint on TikTok for dinner that was crazy good: Pizzeria del Franco. We started with what we thought was a simple charcuterie board, but included effectively a cookie sheet lined with prosciutto. Amazing. The three pizzas we ordered were also fantastic, and I’m too full to remember all the details.

All in all, a chill day at the beach with some great food. Can’t beat that!

      Arienzo Beach Club

      October 8, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Relaxing on a private beach, sit down lunch all included. It was the last day of the season for the staff which turned into a wild party. Everyone was dancing which quickly turned into a swim party. The staff was STRONGLY asking everyone to join in the water. Music, cliff jumps into the water and lots of laughter. I will not forget this day!Read more

      2000 steps to Arienzo Beach!

      May 23, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We swam in the beautiful Mediterranean sea on Monday. Very enjoyable the rocks were so smooth and soft. Getting to Arienzo beach however was quite the trek which included 2000 steps from Nocelle down to the Arienzo. The path meanders through small clusters of houses and we were never sure we were headed the right way. Pictures show the beach and then correlating views of Positano and stops along the way all the way up to our B&B in NocelleRead more

      Positano and Amalfi

      October 14, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We drove from Lecce to Positano, breaking the 6 hrs drive with an overnight stop. In the morning, we drove 1.5 hrs and arrived to Positano. After a quick cappuccino and admiring a stunning view from our balcony in Villa Nettuno, we met our driver for the day. Parking and driving along Amalfi coast is quite an affair, so we had a driver take us around the major sights. We stopped by at the Emerald Grotto and took a quick boat tour in the grotto fo see incredible light that sun shines through the underwater tunnel. Then we drove to Amalfi where we visited the cathedral and museum of paper in the medieval paper mill. We even tried our hand at making paper!Read more
