      It’s All Our Falterona

      June 26, 2022 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

      “Ognuno e’ alla ricera
      un po’ di pone
      un po’ di ajjetta
      e di sentirsi a casa
      da qualche parte.”

“Everyone is looking for some affection and to feel at home.”
~Sign found at the Parish of San Pietro

After leaving our vacant Italian villa alive, we walked towards the town of Stia Pratevecchio. On our way, we visited the Castello di Romena, where Dante was inspired to write about the 9 circles of hell after he observed the interior of the Prison Tower during his stay at the castle in the mid-1200s.

From there, we took a long road down and stumbled (probably literally, if you know us) upon the Parish Church of San Pietro, home to the Fraternita di Romena. a retreat center. As you can see from the pictures, we were welcomed in by several kind and funny women who showed us around, told us about the history of the church dating back to 1152, showed us the hidden spots in the Romanesque architecture, made us laugh with their halting English and our nearly non-existent Italian and then fed us the best (gluten-free) lunch. We were very much made to feel “at home.”

After another few hours of walking, we arrived safely at the Hotel Falterona, named after the mountain that the Arno River, the one we’ve walked with, flows from.

This seemed to be just about the perfect day… until it wasn’t. Since we took our time visiting and walking, we subsequently missed getting food to eat for the next day (p.s. there are no markets open late and most close early, or aren’t open at all, on Sunday). The crackers, candy, and protein bars would have to do. Once we got settled into the room, the AC and refrigerator decided to quit. In a fit of overheated problem-solving brilliance, one of us pulled a business card out of an electrical-looking thing on the wall (thinking that must be the issue because what would a local restaurant’s business card be doing in a wall socket?!!) annnnnnnd, then the power in the room went out. Our multi-tasking skills were on full display as we were also on the phone with AT&T trying to fix more cellular issues.

Through no FAULT of our own, our day in Stia at the Hotel FALTerona (see what we did there?!) ended up being a pretty good one.

Resilience, grit, growth mindset… whatever you call it - those are the real muscles we used again today.

      Ciao for now!

      Passo della Consuma

      August 26, 2020 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Alter. Moah. 35 km vor Florenz. 😒🙄 einer meiner härtesten Etappen bis jetzt. Das war ein Schweineharter Tag!Read more

      Monte Falco - GEA

      June 29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The GEA (Grande Excursione Apeninica) is fantastic to hike. That's how it should be. Wide path and lots of beech trees and shadow. I haven't met so many people on the trail as here. And still it is not a lot.
Often it feels like walking in "the green tunnel". Pretty nice.

      Day 13. Passo della Consuma

      September 8, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A little stiff this morning as we eased ourselves up the mountain for Diacetto. A steady climb. Got lost once but we made it for coffee and dolci. This was followed by about 5 kms on a quiet lane. We met Kathren, Belgian, as we rested on a bench before entering the forest and the afternoon's climb.
The track had been chewed up badly by the loggers and this made it difficult on the steeper sections. We had plenty of shade in the forest, which was welcome. The total climb was 1050 metres. We were glad to arrive in Consuma.
Our hostess drove us about 500ms to the accommodation. We had a 3 bedroom house to ourselves. Irina drove us to and from for dinner and breakfast.
Gerry and Alice(Americans) who we met yesterday were supposed to have dinner with us but they were billeted about 25kms away. Dinner was Kathryn, Ronald(Dutch) and ourselves. It made for a pleasant evening.

      Day 14. Stia

      September 8, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Irina picked us up for breakfast at 7-30 and we breakfasted with K & R. We left at 8 but the other two waited for the Americans and the two Aussies we have yet to meet.
We looked over pass but it was shrouded in mist.
Today was supposed to be an easier day, mainly downhill, with some ascents. Didn't feel like that.
Shirl was having back problems so it made it a very difficult
day. Beat in mind the only way out is to walk. It was a struggle for her. I took the heavier items out of her to try and ease the load. We made it but what an ordeal for Shirl.
Shirl's back injury is similar to the one she experienced on the South West Coast walk.
As soon as we arrived she showered and after a massaged and some painkillers she went to bed to get as much rest as possible.
In the meantime I had to re-arrange our itinerary. The biggest problem is transport in these remote areas.
There is always. solution to all problems and by the time Shirl had rested the problem was solved
We will remain on Stia tomorrow and then travel by bus for two days in Badia Prataglia, an original stop for us.
Then two days in Sansecolpro before, hopefully continuing to walk.
I had already programmed som rest days. Little later on and we will still have them.
In the evening we went to dinner and finally met up with Sandie and Roxanne, two Aussies from Perth. There were 8 of us for a very pleasant dinner. Non stop conversation.
A good night pity I left my mobile in the room.

      Consuma to Stia

      2 hours ago in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Staying at Albergo Falterona
We drifted off to sleep last night to the sound of laughing pilgrims from Germany, they are eating their dinner and having a fabulous time! They’re a lovely big group of 8 who are also walking the Way of St Francis.
We wake this morning, get ready and head down to the bar for breakfast, as we step outside, the cold morning air hits us in the face, there is also a thick, heavy mist to accompany this cold April morning. We finish breakfast and head back to our Albergo, Luca is there and advises us not to walk today, with the current weather and recent rain, Luca says that the forest trail is too slippery and dangerous. We heed his advice and he drives us to Stia, giving us a guided tour along the way and filling us in on some of the history of this area. By the time we get to Stia the mist has lifted slightly and we can imagine just how beautiful this area is when you can see the views on a clear day. We book into our accommodation for the night and head off to have a look around. George gets himself a new jacket that he absolutely loves, it is a puffer jacket and is lighter and warmer than his previous one. We have lunch at a lovely little restaurant and get to dine in the presence of a large Italian family where we make fast friends with the Nonna, we also met a man from Colorado, who has bought the castle in this area and has moved his young family here. His children (young boy and girl) are now almost fluent in Italian and are very happy here in Stia. After lunch we head back to our room for an afternoon rest before heading to the Museo dell’ Arte della Lana. I have gotten my timings wrong and we are unable to go in, we were all looking forward to this and feel a bit disappointed. As we walk past the church the bells are tolling and people are heading inside, we decide to join them and attend our first Italian mass, although the mass is in Italian the order of the mass is still the same, this makes it easy for us to follow along. We meet up with George after mass and go in search of dinner, we end up at a pizzeria and the food is delicious. We then head back to our Albergo ready for bed. Goodnight all. 😊
