• Oviedo

    June 5, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Just a few pictures from Oviedo, which is the end point for the Camino del Salvador. The Cathedral here houses many relics, including the cloth that is said to have covered Jesus's face. However the one on display is only a replica.Read more

  • A looooong day

    June 3, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

I decided to do a 30 km walk today which usually wouldn't take me more than 5-7 hours, but because of the terrain and lots of ups and downs I was walking for over 10 hours.
The trail was very overgrown in parts, and many parts were very rocky and steep, which made it very slow going.
I decided to do this long walk because the weather was really good for it - temperatures in the 70s and partly cloudy. And there's a good chance of rain tomorrow, so I'm glad that I did it today, even though I'm very tired.
Since I crossed over into Asturias today, which is known for its sidra (cider) I'm having dinner in a sidreria.

  • Day one of Camino del Salvador

    June 1, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

There was a mailbox with a notebook along the trail today for those walking this route to sign in on. There were also some first aid supplies inside.
I also walked through oak forests and by fields with wild lavender, and if course more wild poppies. I didn't see any other walkers until I was just a couple of miles from my destination.
I also thought that there would be a café in the small town that I walked through about 1.5 miles into my walk. There was one, but since it was Saturday it wasn't open yet. So I had to make do with some peanut M&Ms until I finally reached a town with a bar/café after about 13 miles.
More pictures to come. Having trouble uploading

  • Leaving the familiar behind

    June 1, 2019 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

I'm leaving the Camino Francés - the most popular route, which I've done twice, and starting on the Camino del Salvador, which has much fewer people, and is more mountainous.

  • Storks

    May 31, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

There are stork nests on the tops of churches all over. Here are some that I saw on today's walk.

  • A friendly face from home!

    May 29, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

My friend Marcella emailed me yesterday to let me know that Nan Schulman from our Camino group in Oregon was volunteering as a hospitalera "somewhere on the Meseta". It turned out that the town she's in was a good stopping point for me today.

This is a very quiet town of about 150 people. Quite a few of the buildings are built of straw and adobe.

  • The "halfway" point

    May 29, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

This marks the halfway point between Roncesvalles and Santiago. But I started farther back in France, and I won't be continuing on the Camino Frances. Instead, when I reach León in a few days I will go on the Camino del Salvador, which goes north through the mountains to Oviedo.Read more

  • Near Carrión de los Condes

    May 27, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

I met this couple this morning. He is traveling along the Camino under his own power in his wheelchair. They have chosen parts of the Camino that are smoother and flatter, but I was still amazed at him. He is using a standard wheelchair with a detachable large front wheel that helps him navigate the terrain.Read more

  • First two days of the Meseta

    May 26, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 43 °F

Some people think that this part of the Camino is boring. In fact today I talked briefly with a woman who commented on my cheeriness, then said how boring the landscape was. All that I could see was and endless blue sky and picture perfect clouds. Not to mention a gorgeous field of poppies!Read more

  • Azofra

    May 20, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

This tiny town is a hidden gem on the Camino. The municipal albergue is very well laid out with single beds two to a room. I'm sharing a room with Diane from England who I met on my first day on the Camino. The albergue also has a nice courtyard with a fountain.
Additionally, just out of town is the Jardín Botánico de la Rioja. The most wonderful thing about the gardens is that you are encouraged to walk barefoot on the cool grassy paths, which felt fantastic on my feet after a long walk.

  • Logroño

    May 18, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Saturdays in Logroño are busy! Saw multiple bachelor/bachelorette parties with people in costumes.
Enjoyed tapas with several people on Calle del Laurel.

  • Sansol to Logroño

    May 18, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

A mostly great day for walking weather wise. Clear and cool. It clouded up a bit at the end, abd I felt a few sprinkles. I entered into La Rioja today, which is famous for its wines.
