      Morioka

      5. August 2022 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      🇨🇵

Il s'agit d'une des 3 spécialités à base de nouilles (The 3 Great Noodles), les 2 autres sont Morioka Reimen (れいめん) et Wanko soba (わんこそば).

      🇬🇧
Sorry for the wait, I was very busy and didn't have time to write new articles. I will catch up in the next few days!

After my trip to Towada, I went to Morioka to join my guesthouse for the night.

I arrived right before sunset, with a beautiful view on Mt Iwate. I really like discovering spots like that by pure luck.

In the evening, I went to a covered shopping alley (that's called Shōtengai しょうてんがい). There were still some Tanabata festival decorations hanging here and there (I'll tell you about them later).

I ate a local specialty recommended by my guesthouse's staff: Morioka Jajamen This is one of the 3 noodle specialties (The 3 Great Noodles), the other 2 are Morioka Reimen (れいめん) and Wanko soba (わんこそば).

Morioka Jajamen is a hot noodle dish containing several vegetables, and miso on top. You stir properly, and then you eat it like that, or adjust the seasoning as you fit.

In this restaurant, there was a red version, and a white miso one. I took both to compare the tastes 😁

The miso was really delicious, and after finishing both dishes, I wanted more ! 🤤

And in fact, with this dish you CAN actually have more ! Because the Jajamen doesn't stop there !

When there is no more noodles, you calle the staff and then say "Chi-Tan Tan" (チータンタン). You'll be given an egg, that you break and put into the plate that contained the miso and noodles. After mixing everything, you'll have some kind of soup, which you eat as a 2nd dish. This is what you see on the 2nd picture of Jajamen.

Even if I really prefer the first step, the 2nd one is very nice to finish as it is light. It's really like a soup.

The next morning I simply walked in the city. I had done a bit of scouting before leaving the guesthouse, and it was very enjoyable despite the little time I had left before my next train.

      🇯🇵

      Miyako Iwate Wandering

      17. Oktober 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

After our delightful hike to Jogodohama Beach, we decided to explore the shops around Miyako Iwate’s train station.

Like other cities we’ve seen in Japan, Miyako has decorative manhole covers, and apparently Halloween is catching on here, because I keep seeing decorations and ads for Halloween parties.

I encountered some funny “Engrish”today including a t shirt slogan, “I’m gland to meet you,” as well as an ad for a “dry creaner’s”

Although we snapped a selfie with the Colonel, we did not eat at KFC’s today. Instead, I bought some seaweed flavored Pringles, a roasted rice dumpling with red bean paste, and what turned out to be frozen ice cream balls.

I associate Japan with high tech, so it was a surprise to discover that most shops are cash only.

You don’t just hand them your money, either. There’s a little plastic dish for you to place it on. They then pick up the dish (with both hands) before placing your change in the dish for you to retrieve.

      It feels so ceremonial!

      Jogodohama Beach

      16. Oktober 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

By the time we reached Jogodahama Beach, the sun came out and we enjoyed a sunny hike.

I was surprised to see signs warning of bears, and delighted to see swan shaped paddle boats by the shore.

Tsunami evacuation signs were a somber reminder of the black wave that swept through Miyako in 2011, devastating the city and causing a partial meltdown at Fukushima. A seaside memorial commemorated the many victims of that tragedy.

      Jodogahama

      1. Mai in Japan ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Blustery day in the '50s. Got my coat on and I should have brought my hat. Might have to hide in a cafe.

Serow is a Kamushka in Japanese, I'm told by the motorcycle guy who rides a Yamaha Serow 250cc.

I walk around the Yodogahama beach, practice my knots for River guiding, getting a bit more rest. The next three days are going to be long hikes in sunny weather.

The seagulls get fed by the tourists so they fly all around begging for food. The food in the cafe is presented in the same jagged shape as the peaks at the beach.

      Ryusendo cave

      30. April in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Easy day. Took train and bus to Ryusendo. Did the cave tour which was kind of interesting and I have to admit that it felt a little creepy to be that far underground knowing that earthquakes do occur here rather frequently. On the other hand this cave has been here for eons. It is filled with rushing water and it has an underground lake that is 98 m deep.

After the cave I had a nice conversation with Oliver. I went to an Onsen, got warm and did 40 minutes in a massage chair. Now I am super relaxed and sitting on a rock by the side of the road waiting for the bus which comes in an hour. That's what Zen does for you.

I'm definitely cutting it close I'm catching a bus that gets me to the last train of the day and the station master shuts the entrance right behind me. That brings it home, you can get stuck out here.

Just when you thought you had today sewn up you get presented with yet another surprise. I get a ride on the most beautiful train I have been on. It's the local and it stops at every station. It is retro and comfy. All trains should be this way.

Take nap, do some admin and make some more travel plans over a miso soup dinner.

      Shimanokoshi coastal hike

      29. April in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

4:45 My internal clock wakes me up there's a hint of daylight and I dash out of bed to make the 5:00 a.m. train and I actually catch it.

On a bench in the train station in Shimanokoshi I meet two Japanese hikers who are going the opposite way. I encounter them again somewhere in the middle to great shouting and yelling and having fun seeing each other again. Missed getting their picture.

What an unbelievable place to hike, it is yet another sunny seventies day. While walking I am startled by a Serow, a type of Japanese deer. It doesn't run off and just stands there in the woods looking at me so I stand still and look back at it. As I'm standing quietly there for some 10 minutes it finally goes about its business and I get to observe it in it's natural habitat. They were almost extinct and in 1955 the Japanese government intervened. Their numbers have recovered completely, but according to my Japanese trekking friend it is a rare sighting.

Being still in the woods has its rewards. Forest bathing in absolute quiet on the edge of a cliff overlooking the water through the trees, all I could hear was the distant rhythmic rumbling of a diesel engine of a ship far ashore. Bird song played the chorus. It's a deep feeling of pre-historic nature.

With time left on my hands I managed to walk another 6K to get another viewpoint on the shore. Back at the train station I run into my bunk mate from the hostel who has all kinds of questions for me as he is hiking this section tomorrow. We spend the evening discussing everything I saw and get him prepared.

      Stunningly beautiful coastal hike

      28. April in Japan ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

A stunning beautiful sunny day in the mid-70s. After all the rain and cloudy days this is exhilarating. On top of that I'm doing a hike in the woods on single track along a coastline that is absolutely mind-blowing. If there's heaven on Earth I think I'm living it.

It's a fairly long hike and I don't know exactly how much time it will take or what to expect so I'm putting in a great effort and I'm flying along. What is surprising is the amount of stair steps and how steep the trail goes up and down. I also take time to enjoy the views. Good mix.

But I know there is a bus at the end to take me back to town. Then I go to the store to stock up on food and I run into a Sunday afternoon tennis match by high schoolers. It's exciting to watch from the bridge vantage point.

I make dinner and have great discussions with three Japanese who are also hiking the trail and are doing the same thing basing out of my hostel. With all the pantomine it is actually pretty funny and we laugh a lot.

      Travel day

      27. April in Japan ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Golden week is supposed to be this crazy busy period of Japanese holidays. I planned to travel this day without thinking about it. I'm bracing myself for the hordes only to find the train stations no worse than normal. I arrive in the dark at my hostel in Miyako. I'm tired, long day.Weiterlesen

      Drei nette/ spezielle Begegnungen

      27. April in Japan ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

So viel Freude in so kleinen Dingen.
