    Let's go !

    Le grand jour est enfin arrivé ! Après près de 2 ans à préparer mon projet de PVT au Japon, c'est enfin l'heure de prendre l'avion. Décollage à 10:35 heure française. Enfin, c'est ce qui était prévu 😅

    Évidemment, je pouvais compter sur la qualité de service "à la française" à l'aéroport. Fini l'époque où l'on préparait son check-in à l'avance pour éviter le stress de dernière minute.

    Plus de staff pour enregistrer les bagages, on doit tout faire soi-même sur un automate, de l'impression de l'étiquette pour bagage à l'envoi de celui-ci en soute. Du coup, tout le monde galère, et malgré une certaine avance, l'embarquement s'est fait dans le stress, et on est parti avec 30 min de retard.

    Arrivé à Tokyo Narita aux alentours de 7h30
    J'étais prêt à une série de vérification, mais pas à ce point là ! Tout était bien indiqué, mais je n'ai terminé toutes les vérifications qu'aux alentours de 10h15, puis j'ai récupéré ma valise sans encombre.

    Au moins j'y suis, et sans quarantaine à faire en plus 😁 Je dois juste faire attention à bien porter le masque et à prendre ma température pendant quelques jours.

    This is finally it. After about 2 years of waiting to fulfill my Working Holiday in Japan, it's now time to take my flight. Departure at 10:35 AM... or should I say it was what was expected 😂

    "French service" was at it's best that day at the airport. I miss the time when I could check-in and finalize it at the airport without stress.

    No more staff to do it at the airport. Instead, clients are expected to perform all the registration using terminals without any staff assistance. If course everyone struggle to do it properly. Even If you arrive in advance, you (and everyone else) begin boarding late. The plane finally took off 30 min late.

    Arriving at Narita airport arround 07h15. I expected to go through many checks related to the pandemic situation and was no disapointed in that regard. Everything was smooth, but the whole process was long, I left at arround 10:15 with my luggage.

    At least I'm in Japan, with no quarantine 😁
    I just need to carefully wear mask and report my health status for about 10 days.    Read more

    First snack

    Après avoir rejoint mon logement et parlé mes premiers mots de japonais (la personne du staff ne parlait pas anglais), je me suis posé avec toute cette fatigue accumulée.

    Évidemment j'ai fait mon premier stop en Konbini pour m'acheter des onigiri 😁

    After getting to my sharehouse and speaking my first words in japanese (the staff lady didn't speak english very well), I rested a bit in my room, quite exhausted by this long day.

    But I couldn't resist a stop at Konbini store to buy some onigiri 😁

    My neighbourhood, Senkawa

    Aujourd'hui je vous fait visiter un peu mon quartier. Ce sera sans doute l'essentiel de mes activités ces prochains jours, car j'ai besoin de faire quelques démarches administratives et achats avant de m'aventurer dans Tokyo et ses alentours.

    Le quartier alentour est essentiellement résidentiel, mais on trouve facilement des Konbini et restaurants à 5 min. Il y a aussi un Don Quijote (DonQui pour les intimes) et un Daiso, ce sont des magasins où l'on peut trouver un peu de tout pour vraiment pas cher, ce sera très pratique pour dépanner.

    J'ai aperçu une longue file d'étudiants en uniforme scolaire en allant prendre mon café de bon matin, il y a surement une école pas loin.

    Today I'll show a bit of the neighbourhood.
    It will probably the essential part of my activities for now, as I still need to settle administrative tasks as well as buy small things before going farther in Tokyo.

    The suroundings of my sharehouse is mostly residential, but I could easily find multiple Konbini stores as well as restaurants arround 5 min walk. There are also a Don Quijote (DonQui) and a Daiso. These two are very convenient stores where you can find almost anything at very small prices.

    Administration

    Moi en train d'attendre mon tour à la mairie du quartier, pour faire enregistrer mon adresse sur ma "Residence Card" (zairyuu ca-do). Cette carte de résident est la pièce d'identité nécessaire à tout résident à moyen/long terme. Il faut toujours l'avoir sur soi, car au Japon le passeport ne suffit pas en cas de contrôle d'identité.

    En tant que titulaire d'un visa Vacances Travail, on m'a remis ma carte à mon arrivée à l'aéroport de Narita. Cependant celle-ci n'est pas complète : il est impératif d'y enregistrer son adresse au Japon sous 14 jours, et sans cela, certaines démarches sont impossibles (ouverture de compte bancaire au Japon par exemple).

    C'était une petite épreuve en soi car les formulaires sont entièrement en japonais, heureusement j'arrivais à comprendre et à me faire comprendre en japonais, et le staff était très sympathique. Pour les moments les plus complexes, un sauveur est apparu, quelqu'un qui parlait anglais 😂

    Me, waiting for my turn in the local city hall, as I needed to register my current address on my "Residence Card" (zairyuu ca-do). This card is a mandatory identification document, for medium / long term stay. You always need to carry it with you, as the passport isn't enough in case of identity check.

    As a Working Holiday visa owner, i got mine on my arrival in Narita airport. But in this state, the card is not considered as "complete": you need to register your current address on its back within the first 14 days. Without it, you're not allowed to open a bank account in Japan, for example.

    It was quite a challenge to register my address, as all the papers I needed to fill were in japanese. Thankfully, I was able to understand and speak, and the staff was very kind. During the most complex tasks, a "hero" emerged : someone able to speak english 😂    Read more

    Day 4

    Suroundings, and cafe

    Sur le chemin de retour, j'ai passé quelques maisons avec pas mal de végétation, ça rendait vraiment bien avec la pluie tombée ce matin.

    J'ai emprunté un petit passage entouré de végétation (2e photo) pour aller à un petit café qui semblait caché et très prometteur. Malheureusement, il était fermé aujourd'hui 😢 Je retenterai ma chance bientôt.

    J'ai continué mon chemin, et je suis tombé sur un autre café, tout aussi singulier: le café "Chopin" ☕🎼

    Ambiance très particulière à l'intérieur : des partitions de musiques, photos de musiciens et orchestre. Le personnel et les clients d'un âge très avancé semblaient profiter du moment, sur un fond de musique classique. En vérité, c'était même plus qu'un fond musical, la musique classique était jouée dans des enceintes de part et d'autre du café à un volume plutôt élevé (mon père aurait sûrement apprécié).

    Autre particularité : les clients fument à l'intérieur, ce qui est plutôt rare au Japon. Les fumeurs ont souvent un espace dédié, que ce soit en intérieur, ou en extérieur.

    On my way home, I passed a few houses with a lot of vegetation. It looked pretty nice after the morning rain.

    I took a small path surrounded by nature (2nd photo) to go to a small cafe that seemed hidden ans very promising. Unfortunately, it was closed today 😢 I'll try again soon.

    I continued on my way, and came across another cafe, equally special : "Chopin"☕🎼

    The atmosphere was very unique inside: music scores as well as photos of musicians and orchestra were used as wall decorations. The staff and clients were very old, and seemed to enjoy the moment, listening to classical music played in background. In fact, it was not really a background music, as the music was played loudly through speakers to immerse the clients in this musical environment (My father would have appreciated)

    Another particularity : clients were smoking inside, which is quite rare in Japan. Smokers usually smoke in a dedicated area inside or outside.    Read more

    Day 5

    Long walk in Senkawa

    Aujourd'hui, j'avais pas mal de petits achats à faire, donc j'ai passé toute la matinée a explorer Senkawa un peu plus en profondeur.

    Contrairement aux journées précédentes, le ciel était dégagé et le soleil tapait fort ! Même si j'avais de l'ombre de temps en temps, j'ai fait un petit arrêt dans une parapharmacie pour me trouver de la crème solaire avant de finir brûlé de partout.

    La promenade étant longue, j'en ai profité pour me passer un podcast de japonais en fond. Même si ça ne remplace pas les conversations, ça m'aide beaucoup à saisir des mots et expressions du quotidien.

    Si vous êtes attentifs, vous verrez sur une photo un genre de sac en "filet" bleu posé au sol. Il y en a un peu partout et c'est normal, car aujourd'hui est un jour de ramassage des déchets, et au Japon on trie les déchets dans différents sac, que l'on met dans ces filets. J'imagine que cela évite que le vent fasse voler les sacs un peu partout 🙂🙃🙂

    J'ai finalement trouvé tout ce dont j'avais besoin dans un Daiso mais j'ai oublié de prendre l'intérieur en photo 😅 Je referais un post dédié une autre fois.

    Today I needed to buy a few things, so I spent the morning exploring Senkawa a bit more.

    Unlike the previous days, the sky was blue and the sun was beating down ! Even if I was protected by the shadows from time to time, I made a quick stop at a health product store to get some sunscreen, before getting completely burnt.

    As it was quite a walk, I listened to a podcast in japanese along the way. Even if it does not replace real conversations, it helps me a lot to understand words and key phrases in day to day life.

    If you look thoroughly at the pictures, you might see a blue "fishnet" bag on the floor. There are many of them arround the area and it's perfectly normal, as today is a trash collection day. In Japan, people do waste sorting in different bags, and put them in these "fishnets". I guess the purpose of this is to prevent the wind to scatter trash bags everywhere in the streets🙂🙃🙂

    I finally found everything I wanted in a Daiso, but I forgot to take pictures of the inside 😅 I'll make a dedicated post later.    Read more

    Day 5

    A ticket... but for what exactly ?

    Pour finir ma balade, je suis aller retirer un ticket que j'avais réservé en ligne, dans un Konbini de la marque 7-Eleven.

    Je ferais sans doute un article plus détaillé sur les Konbini, mais ils ne servent pas qu'à faire des achats du quotidien, loin de là !

    Pourrez-vous deviner de quoi il s'agit ? (Ceux qui savent déjà, ne vendez pas la mèche 🤫)

    Je vous aide, c'est un ticket pour un évènement qui a lieu le vendredi 20 mai 😁

    I finished my walk by a stop at a 7-Eleven Konbini store, to retrieve a ticket I reserved online.

    I will probably do a detailled post on Konbini stores, as they are not only for day to day shopping, far from it !

    Day 6

    Cup of coffee, more administration

    Ce matin, levé à 10h, et oui, je ne me encore remis du décalage horaire 🥱 Le temps de prendre une douche et de mettre ma nouvelle carte SIM sur le téléphone (j'utilisais les free-wifi trouvés en chemin pour mes itinéraires), et je repars pour une balade dans le quartier autour de ma Sharehouse.

    Cette fois, je devais repasser à la mairie pour finir d'obtenir mes papiers.

    J'ai profité de l'occasion pour repasser au café qui semblait caché par la végétation. L'intérieur était vraiment très sympa, et comme vous pouvez le voir par la fenêtre, le jardin entourait le café.

    Les cafés étaient un peu plus chers que d'habitude, mais à ma grande surprise, le café servi était vraiment très bon ! Pas de sucre, crème ou autre artifice, juste une tasse qui rappelait un service à thé, un verre d'eau (servi en général à côté du café lorsque le barista s'y connait un peu)

    En révisant un peu de japonais sur mon téléphone à ma table, j'ai cru entendre mes voisins parler de la France. Je n'ai pas bien compris ce qu'ils voulaient dire, mais ils semblaient plutôt passionnés sur le sujet.

    Après cet arrêt et un petit repas pris dans un Konbini, j'ai pu enfin boucler la partie administrative, en allant au bâtiment administratif d'Ikebukuro 🥳

    This morning I woke up at 10, still not used to the jetlag 🥱 Just the time to take a shower and my brand new SIM card (I was using free-wifi to plan my trips) and I'm off for another walk in the suroundings of my Sharehouse.

    This time I needed to go back to the City Hall to finish administrative tasks.

    I took the opportunity of coming back to the cafe I missed last time, hidden by vegetation. The inside was really appealing, and as you can see in the window, the cafe was surrounded by vegetation.

    All coffees were a bit expensive but I was surprised by the deep flavor of the coffee I ordered. No sugar, no cream in it, just black coffee served in a cup reminding a tea service, and a glass of water (you usually get one near your coffee when the barista know his stuff)

    While I was studying some japanese on my phone at the table, I think I heard the people sitted next to me speaking about the France, in japanese. They seemed quite passionate about it, but I couldn't really understand what it was about.

    After this stop and a quick meal taken in a Konbini store, I finally ended the paperwork part in the City Hall of Ikebukuro 🥳    Read more

    Day 6

    Sunshine City and Namjatown

    Une fois les tâches administratives terminées, j'ai passé une partie de l'après-midi et la soirée à Ikebukuro avec un ami et sa femme, de passage au Japon.

    Ikebukuro est un quartier que je connais un peu car j'y ai habité lors de mes précédents voyages. C'est un quartier assez vivant, surtout le soir, et on y trouve pas mal de points d'intérêts comme des restaurants, magasins, bornes d'arcades, et autres divertissements.

    Les photos peuvent peut-être évoquer de vielles maisons ou un temple, mais en fait il s'agit d'une zone spéciale du centre commercial Sunshine City 😅
    On y trouve des magasins habituels, un Pokémon Center (boutique officielle pokémon) ainsi qu'une zone qui ressemble à un parc à thème, appelé Namjatown 😸

    L'entrée dans le parc était gratuite, et on a pu y manger des Gyozas (raviolis) de multiples régions.

    Il y avait une petite zone mystique / fantomatique avec des décorations un peu partout et quelques animations qui faisaient sursauter 😂

    After finishing the paperwork, I spent the afternoon and evening in Ikebukuro with a friend and his wife, in Japan for the time being.

    Ikebukuro is an area a know of, becauseI used to live here in previous trips. It's quite lively, especially at night and you can find various places of interest like restaurants, stores, game centers and more.

    The pictures might give the impression of old houses or a temple, but it is actually a dedicated area in a commercial center called Sunshine City. In this commercial center, you can find usual shops, as well as a Pokémon Center (Pokémon official store) as well as an area that looks like a theme park, Namjatown 😸

    The entrance was free, and we could taste gyozas (dumplings) from multiple regions.

    There was a small place with mystical / fantomatic atmosphere, quite well decorated and with small jump scares too 😂    Read more

    Day 7

    Breakfast and shrine at Akihabara

    Petite excursion matinale à Akihabara avant une journée bien chargée, à quelques pas de l'Electric Town, très connue pour ses boutiques d'électronique, ses produits dérivés d'anime et mangas, bornes d'arcades et autres divertissements.

    Akihabara abrite également un coin beaucoup plus calme et traditionnel,. situé autour du sanctuaire shinto "Kanda Myōjin". A cette période durant les années impaires, un très grand festival y a lieu, le Kanda Matsuri.

    C'est dans cet environnement plus tranquille que j'ai trouvé un café à l'ancienne, à l'ambiance chaleureuse, sur fond de jazz. Après un excellent café et un cheesecake, j'ai visité le sanctuaire, qui accueillait pour l'occasion un couple prenant des photos de mariage en tenue traditionnelle.

    Particularité surprenante, le sanctuaire abritait un cheval sacré nommé Hikari (lumière en japonais).

    Enfin, j'ai pu voir accrochées dans le sanctuaire des petites plaquettes de voeux, très souvent illustrées avec des personnages d'animes ou mignons (l'influence de l'Electric Town)

    Small morning excursion in Akihabara before a busy day, a few steps from Electric Town, famous for its electronic stores, anime and manga goodies, game centers and more.

    Akihabara also holds an area that is much more quiet and traditional, located arround the shinto shrine " Kanda Myōjin". At this period of the year, a big festival, called Kanda Matsuri is held here, but only during odd-numbered years.

    In this quiet environment, I found an old looking cafe with a warm atmosphere, with jazz music playing in background. After a very good cup of coffee and a cheesecake, I visited the shrine, in which a married couple in traditional uniform, posing for its wedding album.

    Another feature here, the shrine held a sacred horse, named Hikari (light in japanese)

    Finally, I saw in the shrine small wish cards, often illustrated with anime and cute characters. (Electric Town's influence)    Read more
