🇺🇸: Takayama is a really cute city, i especially liked the old town. The architectural style is from the edo period and is just beautiful.😍
For a shopping day also very nice, especially for sake tasting is it great! as you can see there are toris and shrines everywhere⛩️
For dinner we went to the famous grill restaurant (everybody knows it) and ate the best beef i every had in my life. Its called Hida Beef! Its like Kobe/Wagyu beef. Really tender and melts on the tongue😍 the taste is incredible!! You really have to try this when you visit Japan, its worth it i promise.🇯🇵
First you dip the beef in raw eggs and then in the sauce. I know it sounds weird but is soooo good!😍

The next day eat first breakfast. Of course also rice and fish hahaha
And then we visit a market in the near, was really cute. There i bought a 55g glass of Honey for 1000¥ (thats 7,17dollar)
      Was really expensive😵‍💫
After this we going for a short trip to the Hida Volksvillage. A cute old wooden town on a hill. And now we are sitting in the train on the way to kanzawa.🚄

      Takayama

      9 avril, Japon ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After a leisurely start we walked from the hotel to the coach station next door to catch a bus to Takayama.

We left Kanazawa at around 11am and the coach had one stop at Shirakawa, a small place known for it's 'A' houses! It was pouring with rain so I stayed on the bus while Ed took a pic!

The bus continued on and we arrived on time at Takayama just before 1.30pm. the rain had stopped but it was definitely a lot colder. Takayama is in the Japanese Alps and the wind was also biting.

We walked the short distance to our hotel and left our bags before walking back into the centre of town. Takayama is one of the smaller places that we have visited and doesn't have the high rise buildings of larger cities.

We stopped at a small place for some food and had a skewer of the local Hida beef along with some Takoyaki and Maitake mushrooms in a soy sauce.

After food we walked through the pretty twin streets and to an exhibition of the Yatai floats. There are about 23 in total dotted around the town and half are used at a spring festival with the other half being used in autumn, paraded through the streets.

Next we a visit to Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, nestled in the hillside. There was also an exhibition of models of the local shrines, built in intricate detail.

We spent some more time walking through the streets, many of which seemed closed, before stopping at a tiny bar where Ed had a hot sake and I had a sake caiprihiani cocktail!

On the way back to the hotel we finally found a bustling street with some craft shops on. Back at the hotel we grabbed another layer before having our welcome drink and then walking back into town for some food. All of the restaurants are small and everywhere seemed full so it took us a while, and a stop at a craft beer place before we eventually found somewhere to eat and had chicken skewers (yakitori) song with fried chicken.

We tried to find a couple of bars that were in the Right Guide, without success so walked back to the hotel for cards in the rooftop bar at the hotel. (It got pretty busy with visitors playing the piano, often badly!)

      נפרדים מTakayama

      8 mai, Japon ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

היום בילינו את הבוקר חוקרים חלק נוסף בעיר Takayama.

      Shōwa-kan Museum, Takayama, Japan

      13 mai, Japon ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

An unusual retro musuem showing life in Japan from 50s onwards, some of the exhibits seemed more like 'hoarded junk' (as luke put it), but there were some gems to be found - the retro games section was cool, and set out like a Japanese kids room too which really set the mood!

As it was rainy when we arrived in Takayama this was a fun activity to do while we waited to check into the hostel.

      20 mai, Japon ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Hida no sato

      Takayama

      17 septembre 2023, Japon ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We left Hakone by bus to Odawara Station, a Shinkansen to Nagoya, and a local express train for 150 minutes to Takayama situated at 573m the other side of the watershed in the Hida Mountains and surrounded by the Southern Alps at 3000m.
Most Japanese obey the instruction not to walk up or down the escalators at stations.
After checking-in at the ryokan, we went to Hida No Sato Open-Air Folk Museum where old buildings had been relocated around a lake which had carp.
We sat on the floor for dinner at the ryokan where Hida beef was cooked in a heated pot. After dinner, we played various card games but mainly pontoon (21) with small coins to make it more interesting.
There was an onsen at the ryokan as at a number of the accommodations on the holiday. Some were from hot springs and had minerals whereas others were just hot water. A few places had hot baths with silver foil on top to keep the water warm.

      Takayama

      18 septembre 2023, Japon ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We ate a typical Hida breakfast with lots of dishes at the ryokan sitting on the floor.
We went to the morning market where there were lots of shops and booths with food to taste. There were many Japanese and foreign tourists, today being a public holiday to respect the older generation.
Many old houses had been converted into cafes, shops or museums.
We visited Takayama Jinya which was the branch office of the Shogun government from 1692 until 1868 when the Shogun was replaced by the Emperor. This Jinya was the only original one in Japan.
We visited a sake shop for a tasting of three different sakes although I struggled to tell the difference.
I went to the Tourist Information office at the Station to be directed to the only shop with rucksacks but there was nothing on wheels with a handle.
For lunch, I had a Hida beef rice bowl, miso soup, and a Hida cheese pot.
In the afternoon, we walked through a handicraft centre and a local museum to the Retro Museum which had lots of items from the mid-1950s.
We visited a Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple with a 1000-year-old ginkyo tree. These places were much quieter than the equivalent in Nikko.
We had another Hida dinner at the ryokan, and played cards in the evening.
