    Gatwick - Dubai - Bangkok

    December 3, 2024 in the United Arab Emirates ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We had a lift with Leigh and Jackie down to Gatwick, it was a very early start leaving at 3.30AM. We were both super excited to be flying with Emirates and on an A380 airplane, the biggest plane in the world. It was a great flight with wonderful service and amazing food. We seemed to get to Dubai for our first stopover quite quickly.

The last photo shows the size of the jet on this plane, must have been bigger than our van, the plane also had 24 wheels!!

The plane was delayed by 30 mins which meant we had quite a rush to our next gate and to board our second Emirates flight, this flight was a little shorter but the plane was rammed and we ended up next to a family with a young baby so we knew it was going to be a long night. 😂.. Finally landed in Bangkok! The heat hit us as soon as we stepped off.. Thailand here we go!!

We had a private taxi waiting for us at Bangkok airport, we jumped in and headed into the city. We were so happy to be in the sunshine and the chaotic Thai roads. We headed straight to our hotel and they allowed us to check in 5 hours early, we both had a much needed shower and headed into the city for some nice food.

We had abit of an explore and then headed back to our hotel, we had been awake for 29 hours by this time as didnt sleep much on the plane. So early night for us ready for dentist tomorrow! 😬😬

Today we both went for our Thai dentist appointment, we chose to have some work done whilst here due to their much more affordable pricing. Their dentists are trained in America so we knew the standards would still be high. After a 2 hour appointment, we were done.. I Was quite impressed Grace not so...😂. James has to go back tomorrow for another appointment , a long process but very thorough.
After this, with a numb mouth, we headed straight into town. We decided to have a look around the huge shopping malls, these were all decorated with Christmas Anime which was fun, they had lots of lovely food stalls to look around with food luring us in on every corner.
Afterwards, we decided to take a bus down to Lumphini Park, which is famous for huge monitor lizards in the centre of Bangkok. It had parts of the park lit up with lights, its so nice to explore Bangkok at night, seems to come alive. After a walk around the huge park we caught the bus back to the hotel.

Today James had an early appointment to finish off the dental work from yesterday. I was running a bit late so ordered a bolt moped ride to the appointment. This was great fun but slightly scary weaving in between all the traffic. I came back to the hotel to meet Grace.

We took a train down to the riverside today as we had never been to this side of the city, we had some lovely food and a walk along the old parts of Bangkok. We then took a boat down to a Christmas market, Bangkok looked amazing with all the lights coming on, great experience and only 30p each. We got to the market and had an explore. Afterwards we got in a Tuk Tuk to go home, all was going great until a very clunky bang the gearbox decided to give up and I had to jump out and push us across 4 rows of mad traffic. The driver tried to fix on side of road but had no joy, he somehow managed to hike the price up aswell amd we still had a 15 min walk home.. Dont think so 😂.

Today we decided to visit another part of the city which we hadnt been to before, called Silhom. The modern part area of the city with the coolest buildings. We decided to go upto the top of the tallest building in Bangkok called The King Power Mahanakhon. We shot up 314mtrs high in about 18 seconds in a super fast lift which made our ears go pop. When we arrived the sun was setting and it was a nice contrast to see Bangkok in daylight and at night. The glass floor was super fun but was a fight of the mind to enjoy being stood on there haha! Really great evening we were there for a couple of hours! Afterwards we took another Tuk Tuk back to our hotel and packed ready to move on to Khao Sak tomorrow night. We have loved Bangkok but so ready to get out of the city 🐒🌴Read more

    December 8, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We checked out of our hotel and had most of the day to kill before going to our transfer in the evening, so decided to head to Chatuchak market. We took the train up and had an explore around one of the biggest markets in the world! We brought a few bits trying not to splurge and then have to carry everything for the next few months. Honestly if we spent £100 there we would come out with suitcases full. We are both contemplating bringing an extra suitcase back as we will probably fly home from Bangkok! ✈️ We walked through a massive garden part of the market which was awesome and had some (not so nice) food before heading back to our hotel and getting a taxi to our bus departure.

Enroute we passed many of the sites of Bangkok passing the grand palace which we visited last year. When we arrived at the check in it was on Khaosan road which is a crazy party street, we dropped our bags went for a beer and some food here before our 16 hour overnight transfer.

We booked a VIP bus which wasnt that VIP but both managed to have a fairly good nights sleep.

We finally arrived in Khao Sok about 11am, it was a really scenic drive into the park. It felt very much like jurassic park driving in and this is one of the oldest rainforests in the world, at 160 million years old, in contrast The Amazon is 10 million years old!
Our jungle hut room wasn't available until 2pm so after choosing the tour we were going to do, we headed into town for some food and an explore.
Everything feels very jungly and humid, the noises from the surrounding trees humming like a soundtrack. It has a really clean river going through the centre of the village and loads of bars and restaurants to choose from. We had some lunch and headed back to get settled into our room. Our tree house room is awesome, such a great view from the front and very cosy and cool on the inside. After a power nap to keep us going we got ready for our outing tomorrow and had some dinner. Both slept really well listening to the monkeys and jungle sounds outside!

    December 10, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today we had an early start as we were heading into the national park. It took about an hour to drive there, the drive was so scenic!
When we arrived we headed straight down to a thai longboat. We headed across the lake stopping along at certain viewpoints. It was a beautiful park with the 160 million year old coral reef jetting out from the lake with waterfalls and jungle scenes everywhere.
We first stopped at a cave which was cool, it had bats on the ceiling, big spiders and a gecko camouflaging itself against the rock. We carried on to a floating mini resort, here we had a Thai meal and then had about an hour to explore the lake by kayak. After this the ones who wanted a jungle hike jumped onto a boat and headed off to a waterfall. Due to rain season coming to an end there wasn't much to see but was still cool to get into the jungle and experience the sounds and smells.
We had a crazy thai driver taking us home, her overtaking was a bit scary! A great day in the park, now to decide if we want to go in for another hike tomorrow...

We accidentally had a bit of a lie in this morning but it was much needed!
Once we were up and sorted, we headed out for an iced coffee and some food. We decided that we were going to take a jungle hike a bit later on in the afternoon. If we bought a ticket to enter the national park later than 1630, we could use it for the next day too!
We had a look around the shops and stalled some more time before heading to the national park entrance.
We took a reasonable hike through the ancient jungle until we got to a little waterfall. we stopped off here for a while, wishing we had worn our swimwear as the water was so welcoming and blue.
We carried on our circular walk for another couple of hours , hearing lots of strange noises along the way.
Once we finished our walk, we headed back to our room for a much needed cold shower. We then treated ourselves to a penang curry and mango sticky rice in the evening.

As we have stayed on an extra day we unfortunately had to switch rooms this morning. We woke up to a cooler day which was a relief for our jungle trek today. We went for some lunch which as always was delicious before meeting our guide called Boy, they gave us a lift into the national park in a truck. Once we had checked in showing our ticket to enter the park we headed off, sadly down the same paths we went down yesterday however having the advantage of being shown how to find the different wildlife enroute. We found a huge web spider, electric blue tarantula, Lemurs, Salamanders, Monkeys, Frogs, lizards and a fruit bat. Having a guide was a good way to see the wildlife and quiz about what's about. Wild elephants were here 3 days ago which was exciting as we were here then also! We stopped at some lovely waterfalls on the way. After the hike we had a few beers and we headed to our favourite restaurant and had a delicious Massaman curry and mango sticky rice. It was delicious, onwards to Khao Lak tomorrow.

Just before bed a group of angry monkeys ramsacked our balcony whilst we were sat on it which was fun, Monkeys as they are so clever are actually quite scary!😂🌴

    December 13, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Today we woke up to torrential rain, the smells coming from the surrounding jungle was so strong. We packed up and had a transfer collect us to take us on the short drive to Khao Lak. Our driver was literally the worst yet and we were questioning if we would make it at stages... We were dropped off in a big downpour so jumped in a taxi straight onto our hotel. Once settled up in our hotel and after doing some washing we headed down to the beach for an explore and then stopped at a local restaurant and stopped by the sea front for a drink and the best mango sticky rice.
Khao Lak is famous for being a jungle seafront area. It is also known for being the worst hit area when the tsunami hit back in 2004. 4000 people died here out of the 5000 in Thailand. If you have seen the film The Impossibles its based here. We are pleased to say that they have an early warning system in place now and we have checked out where we would need to go as our accommodation is as beachfront as it gets, we fall asleep listening to the sea. We have learnt that 2004 was a freak disaster though and had probably been coming for a few hundred years. There is still evidence of tsunami to this day, still many derelict building / structures left to ruin.

After a lie in, we headed to a local restaurant for some lunch. Afterwards we hired a moped for the first time, we have a 125 honda which has only done 200km. We drove to a place called Coconut beach and had a nice milkshake, after that we headed down to Memories beach which is Thailands famous surfing beach. To our suprise we saw some people actually catch some waves, despite them being tiny. We may head back here tomorrow and have a go. We had a beer in the bar before driving back, enroute Grace spotted an elephant which was awesome! We stopped at the Ripcurl outlet and it was a thai surfboard factory which you could see around, this was so cool seeing where boards are mass produced. We also stopped to see the Tsunami boat which made it over 2 km into shore when Tsunami hit, they have left boat in memorial of what happened. It was mad to think that this was brought here by the sea. We went to a great but touristy night market and had a cocktails with some dinner (Grace braved seafood finally) before heading back to our accommodation.Read more

Had another really late night last night, so we slowly woke up and had some coffee before heading to the restaurant for some food. We arent quite in the time zone yet.. 😂
Trying to be sunny today, which is an improvement.
As the waves appeared quite good yesterday for surfing, we hopped on our little moped and headed to the Khao Lak Lighthouse beach. Typically as soon as we got there and found a nice spot, it started to rain. Still didn't stop James from having a nice surf in the sea for a while.
The weather had started to improve a little, so we stayed on the beach untilll sunset, which was really special to watch.
Once the sun went down, we headed back to our room for a freshen up. We headed to the local restaurant and had a lovely Thai red curry for dinner. As always deliciously cooked.

We went for some delicious brunch at the local restaurant before heading back to the Ripcurl Memories beach for some surf and sun, we took a very scenic off road route from our hotel to the beach, we went past the hotel which was used in the film " The Impossibles", which was cool to see. When we arrived at the beach we stopped for a nice smoothie and watched the surfers in the sun. James rented a board and went for a surf, he was chuffed as he caught the best wave he has ever had so far.
We stayed at the bar watching the sun go down, it was the best sunset yet... Thailand is so beautiful! Enroute back to our hotel we both fancied pizza so stopped at this cool place called "Mario's". The pizza was very tasty as it was cooked in a wood fire oven.
Back to base to pack as we are heading to Koh Phi Phi early tomorrow!

    December 17, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Leaving Koh Lak today, we booked a taxi to our pick up point before transferring into a van which drove all around Thailand before dropping us at the ferry port. It was supposed to be a 4 hour transfer, 6 hours later we get to ferry port before another 2 hours boat trip.. This was a shame as eating into our time at Phi Phi, but luckily me and Grace are one of the first to board. We ran upstairs to the sun deck as its always so relaxing looking out over the sea whilst we cruise slowly to our next stop. After we sailed into the beautiful bay and fought our way through 100s of people we found our guide who put us onto another boat, as it was low tide we had to walk with our luggage through the sea to our transfer boat. This was an adventure in itself with the laptop on my back, once we were boarded we sailed around the island, for the next 2 days we are staying on a quiet corner of the island. Its the most paradise Thailand can offer but also the most commercially tourist driven place also so was nice to be away from all the clubby beach bars on the main strip. We then transferred onto a moped with a little side car, this took us to our resort.
Our accommodation was nice so we settled in and then we headed out of town to a really recommended restaurant which was ran by a lady called Naan, the reviews said as a walk away from the shops no one visits. Wow this was the best food so far in Thailand, flavours were literally insane. After dinner we booked a private boat 4 hour tour for tomorrow £55 it was cheaper than doing an organised tour but shorter day. We can also choose where we spend our time. We are both so excited for this. Maya Bay is so far the most paradise we have ever found. We have an option tomorrow to visit the beach but its an extra £20 on top so we will see how busy it is tomorrow before deciding. Early night ready for tomorrows day out. Koh Phi Phi

    December 18, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Weather looks really promising today, hopefully a day of sun after nearly two weeks 😂.
We were up early, out of our room and covered in sun cream by 845 this morning! We are off on a private boat tour around Phi Phi Leh.
After a quick lift down the dirt track on the moped cart, we hopped onto our long boat for the morning.
The first stop was at Maya beach ( the beach in the famous film, "The Beach"), it was so beautiful but so crowded with tourists. We did have the option of walking onto the beach for an additional 20 quid, but it just looked like chaos! So we decided to jump into the sea for a snorkel instead.
We saw so many colorful fish, including : rainbow fish, angel fish, sharks, puffa fish and the infamous trigger fish.
Back onto the boat to head to our next stop, Pileh bay, just around the other side of the island. Before we got into the bay we stopped and snorkeled for a good while too, James even managed to spot about 8 young baby sharks!
Our next stop was viking cave, before crossing the big bay and stopping for one last snorkel at Monkey Bay. As you know we don't like monkeys, so we had a snorkel and enjoyed a section of the beach with no monkeys, it was so nice here with the trees overhanging the sea.
After such a fun morning, we grabbed some lunch and a very cold beer before sitting on one of the local beaches for a while. We then went back to our room to pack and get sorted for our move tomorrow to the other side of the island.
We both had such an amazing time today, but all the snorkeling in the sea with the sun has meant we have got a bit sunburnt on our backs- good job we remembered the after sun ☀️ typical brits, first bit of sun 😂.

This morning we got back into our little trike and headed back to transfer to the main strip, we were unable to book any more nights with this hotel ,which is a shame. We managed to find a bargain bungalow to move to. We have sunburnt backs so wasn't great carrying best part of 15kg on it, so we walked opposite direction to the bungalow to take advantage of the free shuttle from the pier. This took much longer than planned but eventually we got to our bungalow. Best accommodation yet, nearly £100 off still over our budget but we have put that aside as during peak season bare minimum cost has been £25 a night. This bungalow is £40 a night, Phi Phi is expensive but we couldnt move on just yet.
We chilled at our cabin overlooking the bay for a few hours keeping out of the scorching sunshine with the sunburn. About 4 we headed down to the beach and had some drinks before finding a nice little restaurant (we remembered from last time) to have some tea, we had a different curry which we haven't tried tonight, called a " chilli cream", it was so tasty and not too spicy.
Afterwards, we headed to the beach to watch a cool fire show, this was awesome, although we nearly got covered in bits of burning embers. After a while of listening to like 5 different tunes in one go, (all the beach bars are next to eachother all playing different tunes)we decided to head back to our cosy bungalow for the night.

Today we woke up to scorching sunshine again, we headed down for breakfast at our hotel, it was really tasty! We like this accommodation. We were excited today as we were renting a kayak and heading to Nui bay to go snorkelling. We had abit of a walk around the town before finding the newest looking Kayak to rent, there were 2 beaches to choose from and we decided to paddle to the furthest one as thats where the better snorkelling is. After a long but scenic paddle we arrived at the bay, it was so nice here so we stayed for the most of the afternoon. The snorkeling was good here aswell, we saw 2 big puffa fish, Moray Eel, trigger fish and our favourite rainbow ones. We watched some British lads attempting to fish with a make shift rod they had made which was hilarious. Afterwards we paddled back, slower this time though and grabbed a drink from the bar. We headed back to our cabin before booking our onwards travel tomorrow we had a lovely fresh fish and chips and a couple of drinks at the beachfront. An amazing day!Read more

    December 21, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today we packed up ready to head onto Ao Nang, it was a short 2 hour ferry and 30 minute transfer. Our ferry was at 3 so we had most of the day on Phi Phi, so had a leisurely breakfast and sat on some deck chairs in the shade by the sea for the day. We had some fresh smoothies and it was super relaxing, we didnt want to leave.
Luckily our hotel had offered to meet us with our big backpacks by the pier, this made us both anxious whether they would turn up and we would miss our ferry. However all good and we made it onto the ferry in good time. A leisurely cruise across Pha-ngan bay and into Krabi. We have booked 2 nights here to get ready to head onto Koh Tao. We stayed here previously and had seen most of the sites so just a quick stopover, we were both very tired from sitting around all day so had a Indian curry which was great and an early night ready for tomorrow.

    December 22, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today, we had a choice either of going to see Muay Thai (the thai version of boxing, it's brutal) or going to visit a well known, local snake rescue shelter. We decided to go and see the snakes, snakes are so common in Thailand, and we haven't managed to see one yet. They even have king Cobras over here.
The snake shelter was a ten min walk away, it was very hot so we took our time.
We were firstly shown around the smaller ( but no less deadly) snakes, which included : vipers, pythons and rainbow snakes. The lady showing us around had a very dark sense of humour and found it very funny trying to scare us with her stories. The lady let us hold a Burmese python and a rainbow snake. The python was very placid and wasn't too scary, but the rainbow snake was very erratic. The lady decided to try and put the snake in James' shorts, much to everyone's amusement. Luckily the snake went inside James' pockets instead 😂. It was quite scary as the snake kept opening its mouth wide and staring at us. Everyone was quite anxious , but the guide found it hilarious.
We moved onto the much bigger snakes then, one cage was full of king cobra pythons and the other cage homed a few huge reticulated pythons. The king cobra's venom can kill you within 30 minutes of being bitten and the reticulated python can eat humans with ease. Pretty scary stuff. After knowing this, we then went inside the cage of the reticulated python, which was pretty cool but slightly unnerving.
Finally, we watched a snake show - which was just crazy. The control and guts of the handlers was madness. The mic controller had lost a finger from a bite so very real danger. They had some Black Cobras, a large reticulated python, 3 rat snakes and a King Cobra. They gave opportunities for photos and to get up close with some of the less dangerous species. It was scary but so fun!
One of the men in the show was really nice and gave us a lift in his tuc tuc to the beach close to our hotel. We sat on the beach for a while and then decided to head back to our room to get fresh before heading to the local night market. James managed to find a genuine fake patagonia t shirt at this market, so he was chuffed. We also tried some bbq crocodile, which was okay, actually. It was very similar to pork.
We headed back to our room and packed ready for our early start and transfer day tomorrow.

  • 20. Ao Nang - Koh Tao

    December 23, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

Saying goodbye to Krabi today, onwards to koh Tao! Up quite early at 0600, ready to get our transfer for the boat at 0700. We will miss Krabi, such a beautiful place and we absolutely love the night market. Our hotel was the comfiest we've stayed in yet, too.
We only had about 20 mins in the mini bus before we had to swap over onto a big coach, it was so busy at the coach station, huge queues of people standing around with big suitcases.
Once we were in the coach, we had a very comfortable two hour journey to the pier to catch our fast speed catamaran to koh Tao.
The boat was so crammed full of people, they let us sit in the vip lounge for free to stop people standing around. Before we set off, the crew were handing out handfuls of sick bags, which wasn't promising.
Unsurprisingly, the next two hours were rough! The boat was going so quickly through the choppy sea that almost everyone around us was feeling or being sick. Not very pleasant.
We arrived at koh Phangnan ( the last stop before koh Tao) and we're told that we had to transfer onto another boat. There was someone being taken into an ambulance from our boat, which was really sad.
We only had another 30 mins on the boat before we were met by our transport to the hotel at the pier. We were so relieved to be on land! The journey took about 20 mins, as we are at Tanote Bay, which is on the opposite side of the island to the pier. We had high hopes as the poshest transfer vehicle yet too. We are super pleased with our resort, the views are just beautiful and the swimming pools are amazing.
Before the sunset, we decided to walk down to Tanote beach for a quick swim and a drink. This beach is known as the best for snokelling on koh Tao due to the rocks and coral. James saw some amazing fish! Both really happy this is on our doorstep.
There was a really nice beach side restaurant where we stopped and had a massamam curry for dinner, watching the sunset over the sea. It was a lovely evening.

  • 21. Koh Tao Christmas Eve

    December 24, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The weather didn't look promising today, looked very cloudy and overcast, it was quite windy, too.
We headed downstairs for our breakfast and ate as much as we could to prepare us for the day. Luckily, by the time we had eaten and packed our stuff, the sun had started to come out.
James popped out for 30 mins to go and collect our new moped, 160 cc to make sure we can both get up the steep roads 😂. We made use out of it straight away, and drove it down the road to tanote Bay . James handled being back on the busy roads very well!
We stopped of at tanote Bay for a good couple of hours as it is known for being the best beach for snorkeling in Thailand. It certainly didn't disappoint, but the sea is quite choppy here with a current.
Time was getting on and the sun sets at 1800, so we drove to the other side of the island to find a nice place to sit to watch the sunset. We found this bougie restaurant and managed to find the perfect spot. We had another quick dip in the sea before having a drink and some calamari in front of the sunset.
When we went to leave the restaurant, we realised they were doing a special Christmas set menu for about 30 pounds each. We thought it would be really special to have a meal by the sea for Christmas, so we took their number down for when we discuss plans later.
We headed back to our resort for a shower and some food. We both had this weird Thai pasta dish, it was strange but quite pleasant! We were the last ones to eat the restaurant and they had started to close up for the night, so we had full use of the pool table for a few hours with not many people around. We met a really funny and very drunk French couple called Alex and Charlotte, we ended up speaking with them for ages, then Charlotte went off on a tangent about world politics, so we called it a night 😂.

  • 22. Koh Tao Christmas Day

    December 25, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Christmas morning! Woo, how special having Christmas in Thailand.
We had a relaxed breakfast with a nice mock tail before chilling by the pool for abit. After a while the sun properly came out and we headed down to the beach for a chill and snorkel.
Going to the beach was great fun as people were all getting into the spirit with good vibes and singing haha. After a few hours of beers and sunshine we headed back to the hotel as we were aiming to speak to home, it was so nice to speak to everyone and definitely made it feel more Christmassy. We decided after yesterdays findings to book a beachfront table to watch the sunset. It was a great thing to do, we had a 3 course steak meal slowly whilst the sun was going down and had some lovely wine and prosecco. Felt very sophisticated for Thailand, food was good as first western style food we have had since being in Thailand. Truly special meal for Christmas. As we were on the moped we decided to drive back after meal and have drinks at hotel instead of in town. After having another breakdown on the moped we finally arrived back. Here we ordered some cocktails and played pool into the night which was fun. What a great Christmas we have had!

    December 26, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

First proper chill day today by the pool. The sun was so bright and hot today that we didn't fancy doing much. It's nice to stay in nicer accommodation once in a while as you don't feel that urgency to get up and go out for the day every day.
We stuffed our faces again at breakfast time and sat by the pool sipping iced coffees for the morning, taking dips in and out of the pool every so often. It was bliss.
